1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Ashkenaz Williams
2. Dear Researchers, Anyone who has a person named Ashkenaz Williams in his/her genealogy should do a www.google.com search. Type in quotation marks ashkenaz williams and see what comes up. The name is unusual enough to get some more defined results than say, John Williams (ugh!) And I have at least two in my lineage! I have found this unusual name in colonial or early federal North CArolina and in western Kentucky. One deed (or power of attorney), I forget in which western KY (Jackson Purchase or adjoining) county, states that Ashkenaz is of Chatham Co., NC. This would have been ca 1830 or earlier. Was it Christian Co., KY--can't remember? (I am a rather senior citizen). I may stumble across this name again, as he seems to lurk in the same places as some of my Williamses, but I cannot link him to my Williamses. (Please, everyone, I don't know about every colonial Williams in VA or NC, and certainly NOT in SC. And I don't know of everyone by that surname in early Kentucky. You are on your own. Just pray for an unusual name like Ashkenaz!!!) E.W.Wallace

1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Matthias Williams descendents?
2. Lisa McDonald
3. As long as everyone has Williams in mind, perhaps I could get some help. I am looking for information on my ggg-grandfather, Martin Williams, born 1820ish in TN, s/o Matthias b. 1789 s/o Matthias b. 1755, s/o Matthias b. 1720ish, Cumberland Co VA. I am descended from Martin's daughter Charlotte by his first marriage to Rebecca Stonecipher-which apparently ended in divorce or abandonment in the late 1840s. Rebecca raised Charlotte, Asway and James Martin by herself and Martin married Mary Pittman. Can anyone help me with this line or point me to some sources? Thank you! 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Old Baptist info on the internet Isle of Wight VA
2. There is one other church of more than ordinary interest in this country, it being the mother of the churches of the Baptist denomination in this section, "Mill Swamp." It is a well established fact that the Baptists established a place of worship known as Burleigh church somewhere in the vicinity of Mill Swamp, perhaps on the very site on which is located the present church, sixty years before it had an existence, for, at the solicitation of Baptist brethren in Isle of Wight, made to their brethren in London, the Rev. Robt. Wooden, in 1714, did reach this county and establish the old church above referred to. In January, 1727, Caspar Mints and Richard Jones came over from England, settled near the church, and the latter was its pastor for over thirty years, then following twenty years of unrecorded history, and after a career of about forty-three years became extinct and was lost to history. In 1772, the Rev. John Meglamore, from Raccoon Swamp, now Antioch church, Sussex county, preached and baptized a number of people; these people, on July 2nd, 1774, met near the site of the present church and organized themselves into a Baptist church, with David Barrow as pastor, under his name. For seventeen years this church was called "The Church in Isle of Wight," or "David Barrow's Church." In 1791 it assumed its present name. This old church sent out colonies at a later period to Smithfield, Moore's Swamp, Tucker Swamp and Bethesda.

3. For those of you who might be interested in some history of the Maherrin Baptist Church, Lunenburg County: The original church minutes are located in the State Archives of Virginia in the Genealogy Section, Rare books. I found several references for my ancestors in the minutes, dated 1771-1842 and 1842-1844. Was facinating reading. Staff will copy any pages requested. 3. Dear JCC, You are signed up for the list in what is called "Digest" mode. This means instead of getting each message in 'real time', the messages to the list are held and sent at the end of the day in a "digest" form. If you choose not to view them because you are afraid of a virus, fear not, because Rootsweb has a virus protector. However if you want to see each message, one at a time in real time that you must change your subscription from 'D' to 'L'. If this is your desire, the listmanager can tell you how. No, but the "Baptist" church came into existence just after the reformation. >>Baptist churches are based on the churches that Paul founded. << Do you mean the DOCTRINE of the churches that Paul founded? Here's a good website on Paul. You may want to rethink some things. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/religion/first/missions.html Below are two good website for a little Baptist and a little Catholic history. 3. As a life long Baptist, with Baptist ministers from Halifax Co., Va. as ancestors, I can speak to what I was taught. Baptist churches are based on the churches that Paul founded. Each church is autonomous. although some are bound together loosely through the Southern Baptist Convention, American Baptists, etc. The SBC mainly funds seminaries and missionaries (home and foreign). Some people claim that Baptists are Protestants; however, I was told that we are not. We believe that independent churches have always existed and we did not arise out of protests against the Roman Catholic church. I can not proclaim the above information as written in stone...it is what I was taught in my Sunday School and Church services.

Their children were Indianna (b.1847) Gustavus (b.1849) Caroline (b. 1851) Ella (b. 1854) Mary Jordan (b.1856) Indianna married James Oliver Savage and had Harriet (b. 1869); she died 1873, and he married Mary Jordan Williams and had Beulah. I am interested in any information about any of these Williamses and anything about Marsha King. Kitty
