    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Re: Help from everyone

    3. That poses the biggest problem the Lady has. She has no vision by which even to sort now. I am hoping there is a library, university, or archives that is willing to understake to preserve those records, even if there is no sorting till way down the line sometime. As I said, in addition to forwarding all responses to this Lady, I will compile ande forward to our lists all the fine suggestions already received. -- Original Message ----- From: Mildred "Mickey" Fournier To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2003 5:34 PM Subject: Re: Help from everyone I'm 66 and if I live to be 100 and scanned eight hours a day, I doubt I would be able to plow through this 30 odd years of handwritten transcriptions (I'm older than photocopiers), notes on napkins in my own brand of shorthand, written conversations I have had with myself, etc. Nobody else would ever know what a lot of this means, anyhow. I guess I ought to at least start getting it into a sharable (is that a word?) form. Mickey

    1. Re: [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Help from everybody
    2. Paul, First of all: DON'T THROW IT AWAY!!! (1) Perhaps she could have some kind person transcribe it all to a website for the use of all who may be interested. (2) If she has a book already for one side of the family, she could "bury" that information she has and have the other side of the family with all the "cousin" marriages which are confusing recorded. (3) Leave it for her disinterested children to wade through. I suspect some descendant will come along who is interested in continuing her research someday. When my uncle, the "family genealogist" died, I got really interested in what he had done and continued it. I now have a young first cousin, once removed, who wants to take over where I leave off. You never know. Sincerely, B. macKie

    3. College Libraries would certainly have capacity. The Universities of South Carolina and Virginia have great collections compiled from personal research. Those of us who research in the Southeast are surely familiar with the Andrea Collection. I'm sure other schools would welcome these files. Or have you considered a County or State Archives or Library? The Alabama State Archives had many, many file cabinets filled with personal research papers. The Virginia State Library has similar collections. 3. I want to thank everyone who has so generously supplied information about my (presumed) ancestor Agatha (Keeling?) Williams. New information casts doubt on my ancestor Hutchins Burton as being her son. A granddaughter of my Hutchins challenged his estate in court in Halifax VA , citing his death as 1828. There are many Hutchins/Hutchings Burton, but I cannot find more information about one who died in 1828. I descend through his son William Burton who married Mary "Polly" Wade. Will appreciate any help you can give me. Cordially Joyce "Jo" Dixon Helmers

    2. Margaret Driskill
    3. Same book, page 83-84 "A study of the racial strains which mingled in creating the early papulation of the County would be interesting indeed. Even a cursory glance at the facts is instructive. The early settlers of Lunenburg were but 2 or 3 generations from Jemestown. the same family names are found at Jamestown and among the early settlers of Lunenburg. Allen, Betts, Bell, Jones, Coles, White, Dixon, Boswell, Garland, Stokes, Edlow, Gee are illustrations of this fact. All of these were at Jamestown as early as 1635 and all are represented among the pioneers of Lunenburg county. No attempt has been made to compile an exhaustive list. These names were noted more or less at random from Hotten's Lists, and also appear among the earlier patentees of land or are otherwise identified with the early history of the Lunenburg section. The english, the Scotch, the French, the Swiss, the Welch, the Palatines, the American Indians mingled to produce a population with characteristics of which any people might well be proud. The english were the most numerous, and embraced such well known names as Byrd, Randolph, Bolling, Garland, Coleman, Hardy, Buford, Bacon, Bell, Read, Bouldin, Jones and Bland. William Byrd, second of the name in Virginia, of "Westover", Charles city County, was one of the very early and at one time possibly the largest of the land owners in ancient Lunenburg. In 1728 he was one of the commissioners on the part of theState of Virginia to run the dividing line between Virginia and North Carolina. It was no doubt at that time his attention was attracted to the two islands in the Roanoke River, for which, together with other land aggregating 1,550 acres, he secured a grant on September 28, 1728. This estate, which the Byrds called "BLUESTONE CASTLE," passed to Sir Peyton Skipwith, who built upon it the fine old mansion known as Prestwould, about 1756. (See: HISTORIC GARDENS OF VIRGINIA, PAGE 308) By Sale. The tradition is that Sir Peyton won this estate from Colonel Byrd in a game of cards. The house on this estate is built of stone, and from its river front "there is an entrancing view of the Dan and Staunton rivers at their confluence with the Roanoke. Between the first-named rivers lie the three islands, the center one of which, Occoneeche, was the stronghold of a tribe of Indians of that name, whom Nathaniel Bacon practically exterminated in a desperate battle." William Byrd, who conveyed the "BLUESTONE CASTLE" to Sir Peyton Skipwith, did not lack for a landed estate ......etc. Charles I hope that this helps. One other interesting note. Sir Peyton Skipwith who acquired the BLUESTONE CASTLE estate, and built Prestwould, was descendant of Sir Grey Skipwith, who emigrated to America during the usurpation of Cromwell. He was twice married, first to Anne Miller and next to her sister Jean, both daughters of Hugh Miller. Jean the second wife was the designer and creator of the famous garden at Prestwould. 3. Hello Charles, Yes, In Bell's OLD FREE STATE, Volume I, page 78-79 you find: "the approach of the early pioneers and settlers into the original Lunenburg area was largely up the Meherrin and the Nottoway from the territory that is now Brunswick, and from the lower Appomattox, on up that stream and its branches, such as Bush Creek, Briery and buffalo, and thence across to the branches of the Roanoke, such as Horsepen Creek, Ward's Fork, Turnip Creek, Falling river, Difficult Creek, Banister River and the waters of the Staunton and the Dan. It would be difficult to tell which route was followed by the greater number. Others came from the same general direction, that is, from the eastward up the Roanoke. Colonel william Byrd in his account of "A JOURNEY TO THE LAND OF EDEN", page 10, records the fact that after leaving BLUESTONE CASTEL, September 20, 1733, he and his party proceeded up the river, 'as far as Hagen's, above which about a quarter of a mile we forded into the little Island, and from thence into the Fork of the river. The water was risen s! o high, that it ran into the top of my boots, but without giving me any cold, although I red in my wet stockings. We landed 3 miles above the point of the fork, and , after marching three miles farther, reacht the Tenement of Peter Mitchell, the highest Inhabitant on Roanoke River.".. Charles, there are two other pages regarding BLUESTONE CASTLE. I shall type them for you shortly. I am sending this to the list in case there is interest. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] more on William Williams and his daughter Ann
    2. Sue Gill
    3. Hi, My notes were a bit misleading when I said that Williams left part of his patented land (Lunenburg Co) to his daughter, Anne Johnson in 1755. I went back and found the Johnsons in the Lunenburg Co. Deed index, and this was a deed of gift. Grantor: William Williams Grantees: Anne Johnson & Heirs This was Deed Book 4, page 57. I have found more today: Besides the daughter Anne, sons Matthew Williams and Lazr Williams also received part of his land. Witnesses to the transaction: James Mackdaniell, John (Moutray?), Richard Williams. Although this deed was in Lunenburg Co. records, it says William Williams "of Brunswick Co." Dated 1 April 1755. Recorded the same day. In the Lunenburg Co. Court Order Book 3, page 188: Sept. 1754. Matthew Williams added to list of Tithables. Lazerus Williams added to list of Tithables. William Johnson added to list of Tithables. All of these men were added the same day. William Johnson caught my eye, since I was wondering about Anne Johnson. Can anyone figure this out? Sue

    3. Before we end this discussion of Williamses, in 1820 my ancestor, Henry Brown, made entry in Henry Co TN for "land on the banks of the Tennessee with the meander of the river to the NE corner of Robert W. Williams". Since the Jackson Purchase counties were mentioned in some of the posts, and the fact that my lines were from VA via NC , I thought it might help some of you. County records also show that Henry Brown signed a note for Rebecca J.Williams for 500 acres of land, and that he sold land to Solomon Williams. I have no evidence of any relationship with the Williams , but would be interested if anyone could identify them .

Description mentions John Parker's line, Great Branch, Howell's line, Stoney Creek. Williams left part of this to his daughter, Anne Johnson, 1755. (258 acres). 1. Re: [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Baptist
    2. "During the 16th-century Reformation in Europe, the Protestant Anabaptist, or Christian Brethren, movement flourished in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and other countries. The basic belief of the Anabaptists was in adult baptism, but they also supported the separation of church and state and voluntary church membership. While there was no direct development from the Anabaptists to the growth of the Baptist churches in England, it is very likely that the latter were influenced in their beliefs and attitudes by the continental Brethren."
