    2. William Mallory
    3. Speaking of research, perhaps someone can direct me to some information about 19th century travel. Some members of one of my Brunswick County families migrated down to western Georgia in the 1830s. I have good documentation that many visits were made to Georgia over the next forty years by the family members who had remained in Virginia. I am particularly interested in knowing what travel was like for them in the 1832-1853 period. It seems railroads were just being built and Brunswick had none until much later. Hoe long would travel on the stage roads have taken? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Bill Mallory ----- Original Message ----- From: "paul drake" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 13, 2003 8:43 AM Subject: [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] maps > Here are maps that will be of interest in your research. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Re: Maps and a Caution!
    2. For cemeteries, I would recommend USGS topographic maps. However, a word of caution: The USGS maps for McLennan County TX show just over 50 cemeteries -- the Cemetery Interest Group at the Waco-McLennan County Library has discovered over 300 cemeteries in this county. Many were already lost or abandoned when the USGS maps were made. Here's another idea for you.... I have purchased several county-level maps from historical societies. They often have the name of the land owners, geographic features, roads, mines, etc. If you cannot locate a cemetery, these might give you an idea where to start looking (old population centers). For example, I believe Wythe County Historical Society sells maps for a few counties (or they had a link to a statewide Historical Society that sold them). These are interesting and nice to look at...but may not have all the features you want (such as cemeteries). Happy Hunting! 3. Some individual placed an url on this list I believe stating it was a MUST for researchers. The map was in form of a movie and started with l3 states, and went on with additional lands added to make the US. I read the beginning and was interrupted, and in my confusion inadvertently deleted the message, dumped my trash and can't retrieve it. Would the person who put this url on the list please resend it? It is a wonderful source of history and can be of much help to a researcher. Thank you. Gena __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Go to the Virginia Department of Transportation to obtain county maps: <http://virginiadot.org/infoservice/maporder.asp> They are 1995 versions and do have waterways, towns, and roads, and they are only fifty cents. Some counties have more than one map, but the price is still fifty cents. Marilyn Symonds

    3. Yep, the USGS 7.5' Quadrangles are by far the best available. Check United States Geological Survey on Google and then go to maps. Plus, the local Chambers of Commerce quite usually have the ones for the neighborhood available. ----- Original Message ----- From: Georgia Walsh To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, June 12, 2003 9:42 AM Subject: [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Maps Does the State of Virginia have for sale detailed maps of the various counties in the state that included streams, back roads and cemetery locations? 3. You want to look for these maps: http://edc.usgs.gov/Webglis/glisbin/finder_main.pl?dataset_name=MAPS_LARGE They are usually locally available at sporting goods shops or wilderness outfitters and possibly large bookstores. DeLorme publishes statewide atlases with much the same info, but on a smaller scale. They run about $20 for the whole state. I keep one for each state I am researching. They are often found in bookstores, news stands, and large supermarkets. Or check at: www.delorme.com Click on CONSUMER PRODUCTS and then PAPER MAPS. Topographical maps can be viewed online at: http://www.topozone.com/ Myron E. 3. Subject:Satan's Beatitudes ----- Original Message ----- SATAN'S BEATITUDES If the devil were to write his beatitudes, they would probably go something like this: 1. Blessed are those who are too tired, too busy, too distracted to spend an hour once a week with their fellow Christians -- they are my best workers. 2. Blessed are those Christians who wait to be asked and expect to be thanked -- I can use them. 3. Blessed are the touchy who stop going to church -- they are my missionaries. 4. Blessed are the trouble makers -- they shall be called my children. 5. Blessed are the complainers -- I'm all ears to them. 6. Blessed are those who are bored with the minister's mannerisms and mistakes -- for they get nothing out of his sermons. 7. Blessed is the church member who expects to be invited to his own church -- for he is a part of the problem instead of the solution. 8. Blessed are those who gossip -- for they shall cause strife and divisions that please me. 9. Blessed are those who are easily offended -- for they will soon get angry and quit. 10. Blessed are those who do not give their offering to carry on God's work -- for they are my helpers. 11. Blessed is he who professes to love God but hates his brother and sister -- for he shall be with me forever. 12.
