    2. Hello Everyone, With regard to the following message, I highly recommend that Nel subscribe to the Richmond Co NC list, to which I am a subscriber. It is excellent and has several very knowledgeable persons who know the history of Richmond and its parent, Anson Co. NC, inside and out, include perhaps insights into the question raised. What I do know, as my Louisa/Caroline Co. VA ancestors (Clarke, Haley, Medlock/Matlock, Stone) migrated there over a period of 20 years. When they first arrived they were involved in activities surrounding the basic stripping of the forests for wood, most of which was used in/up by the Rev. War. Then that land was planted in cotton, which also worked out well. (My group left for Robertson Co. TN in 1805/6, one family I am told (but question) because there were still too many Tories (probably Quakers) in the neighborhood.) Good Luck! 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Brunswick County Courthouse Lookup
    2. Is there anyone out there willing to do a Lookup at the Brunswick County, VA courthouse for me??? If so...please send me your fee schedule. I'm looking for the heirs of James Stainback and his wife, Elizabeth Dugger Stainback. James died between 1810-1811. Elizabeth is listed as the land owner in 1815 according to the land tax records, but is not listed in the 1820 Census. I'm thinking she died before then. Anyone interested in searching the Guardianship accounts (as most of the children will be underage at the time of their deaths), Order books, or Probate records please email me. Thanks.... 3. Nel wrote the following: I and my family are listed in the 1790 Richmond Co, NC as Free Negro. I think I'm white but I may be 1/2 Indian. I'm positive my wife is Indian but she may be part Negro (or at least darker skinned). My kids could be a mish-mosh of light to dark. **** In 1790 sparsely populated Richmond County, NC was on a principal early road/trail from Wilmington to Charlotte and on west, and the law, though primitive by our standards, was present and active. Just as today, a person - black or white or in between - was known to his/her community, hence it is doubtful that your family, once acquainted in the area, would be required to show identification or "freedom papers" as you went about your life. As now, strangers were suspect, and the papers of such people would have been demanded and carefully examined (especially since there often was a reward for unemancipated Slave), while others lnown to the residents would not be bothered. More important, mixtures of the races on this continent had been taking place for then 175 years+-, and quite like today, there were many shades of color among those of mixed lineage. That fact and the genealogy of most, no matter what color, being quite unknown, when the enumerator came by, if you were known, and though you did not know your lineage, the enumerator put down what you appeared to be just as he used phonetic spelling of those who were illiterate). Since, if you were any part Black you were considered all Black, many claimed to be part Indian, thus avoiding bringing to themselves the stigma of being known as "Black". (Even though in many places being of American Indian blood carried the same social rejection.) Finally, notice that by 1790 in Tidewater country it had been more than 100 years since there had been Indian/White harsh conflicts, so there you were less likely to be believed if you claimed Indian blood, while in the moutains of NC/VA/etc., the likelihood that you would be believed was much greater. Paul Our ancestors acted and thought VERY much as you do. I suggest that if you encountered that mixed race family, and they had been known to you or your friends, you would likely not ask for identification, yet still would put them down in the census catgory that seemed to fit. By the same token, if you were that head of household in Richmond county, when asked for your race, you quite likely would at least consider asserting that you were part Indian and not Black. ****

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Betts Final Resting Place
    2. Good Morning and Happy Independence Day (almost!)! I am looking for Emmett Lee Betts who died in the 1930's.  He had lived for several decades in Lunenburg County, Pleasant Grove District.  This is right next to Prince Edward County and Charlotte County.  Since he had a lot of relatives in Prince Edward Co., I think he could have attended church there and perhaps been buried there. Does anyone have knowledge of this Betts and perhaps where I could find him buried along with his wife Allie M. (maiden name unknown) Betts? Thanks, Karen in GA

    2. The LVA site has some digital records in a card system. I know the Confederate soldiers is one. Just go to the LVA web site and click on what we have then whatever general subject you are researching. I clicked on military records and then on Confederate pension rolls veterans and widows electronic card index. The LVA site is www.lva.lib.va.us and just go from there. It's a great site to spend time browsing. Edith In a message dated 7/2/03 1:24:10 PM, [email protected] writes: << I thank all of you that have sent me the links to Va. Go to: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/ There are numerous categories here, but you are probably interested in the Archives and Manuscripts Catalog. Click on that link. This leads you a search page. Type in the family name you researching in the word or phrase field and select "keyword" under search type. This will generate a "card catalog" format listing of the items in their Archives and Manuscripts collection in which that family name appears.
