OOPS!! I forgot to tell where the graves are located! I think I remembered everything but my brain that day. I have listed everything again though. Location of the graves: Birch Creek Road, Keeling, Pittsylvania Co., VA Directions: from Danville: from 29 north, take right on Malmason at stop light after the two modular home dealers (I forget their names) if you hit the Chatham exit you've gone too far from Malmason, take left on Keeling at the Swan Lake campground sign Keeling will lead you to 360, take a left from 360 turn right on Birch Creek Rd (st rd 713 if the sign is down again) another way: from 58 east, pass airport, turn left onto st rd 729 at Airport Coin Laundry on 729, about 10-12 miles, turn left on Birch Creek Rd on Birch Creek, keep going until past bridge (if you hit 360 you've gone too far) graves are off a long dirt road on the east side of Birch Creek Rd. dirt road is marked by two white pillars marked with house numbers 1935 and 1939 go down the dirt road until you have passed the two houses on the right of the dirt road the graves are approx 300 yards down from the second house on the right the graves are covered by weeds pretty badly right now ( I know where they are and I had to hunt a few minutes) I had to knock the weeds down from around the stones to photograph them here's what is on the stones again (medium sized stone) Raleigh Ashby Dawson son of Spencer & Lizzie Dawson May 9, 1911 Nov 7, 1947 Gone but not forgotten (medium sized stone) Virginia E. Dawson Mar 19, 1916 June 16, 1918 Not dead but sleepeth (metal marker from Wrenn Yeatts funeral home) Clara Mae Pruitt 1931-1931 (small stone) Wade Maynard Hall son of Mr & Mrs G.L. Hall Oct 3, 1942 I forgot to add last time that Virginia Dawson and Wad Hall's graves have small footstones with initials on them. I don't know if anyone needs these, but when I went on my walk today I finally remembered my paper, pen, and camera. There is a small graveyard on the property adjacent to mine, and I thougt someone might want them. Will give directions and eventually photographs to whoever wants them. This is what was on the tombstones: (medium sized stone) Raleigh Ashby Dawson son of Spencer & Lizzie Dawson May 9, 1911 Nov 7, 1947 Gone but not forgotten (medium sized stone) Virginia E. Dawson Mar 19, 1916 June 16, 1918 Not dead but sleepeth (metal marker from Wrenn Yeatts funeral home) Clara Mae Pruitt 1931-1931 (small stone) Wade Maynard Hall son of Mr & Mrs G.L. Glenna, Cub Creek is nowhere near the fork of the Meherrin. Cub Creek is located just west of the center of Charlotte County, and feeds into the Staunton River (known as the Roanoke in other counties). Get a map of Virginia that shows some detail in the counties --- a Triple AAA atlas will do. Locate Charlotte Court House. Follow State Route 40 west from CCH and you'll see the town of Phenix. Just west of Phenix is Cub Creek, the large creek running north-south. Cub Creek Church (and the Caldwell Settlement) was located due south of Phenix and SR 40 on route 619. Hope this helps. Hi to everyone, I have tried to find a geographical map showing the exact location of Cub Creek, but,I have not been able to find anything but the Fork of the Meherrine River. Can someone tell me where Cub Creek is geographical located? Thank you for any help, Glenna [email protected] [email protected]
Mickey, I think there are numerous reasons. From my example it appears the person giving the info in the 1st. location was *not* one of the family. I'm sure family would have known Milly's given name! They were probably living in this area while working for someone in the neighborhood but *usually* lived at the other location. I have ancestors who were counted twice in 1830. They were enumerated in one county just before they left and in the other almost as soon as they arrived. Could that explain it? Della, the information from census records can be confusing sometimes. It depends on whom the census taker (back then door to door) interviewed at the residence. I had an ancestor who was suddenly six years younger than the census taken ten years before. Also, if a child gives the information, they're often wrong. Margaret might have been called "Mary" for short. He may have owned two properties, giving family names each census interview. Lots of things could have happened.
I'll concede that both having a son Edward 12 years old stretches coincidence a bit far. This intrigues me. Please post the census page & household numbers so I can look them up. Myron E. I don't think so. Both are 45. Both have a 12 year old son named Edward. Seems to me, they may be the same person. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Myron E. Della: The easiest explanation would seem to be that there were two Woodson Beavers. Cousins perhaps? How much do you know of your great grandfather's parents and uncles and aunts? Myron E. I have found my great-grandfather, Woodson Beavers, living in Danville, Pittsylvania, VA in the 1870 census. He is living with my great-grandmother, Margaret and my grandfather, Edward. My problem is I also found him in Pittsylvania County, in 1870, living with a Mary (wife), Mary (daughter) and Edward (son). I am not sure what to make of this. Can anyone help? Also, where can I look for birth and death records. He was born in approximately 1825. I don't know when he died.
Cynthia, I was looking at the original hardcopy tax records in Charlotte County this week and noted the letters you mention. Although they look like "sf," they are actually "Lf" and in some cases "Lfree." This stands for Land free and is used to denote people that paid taxes on personal property but no longer owned land. They are not found in the land books. Another combination seen is Fn" or simply "F" to denote a free negro. Where county names are noted it indicates the individual owned taxable property (real, personal, or both) in Charlotte but actually resided in the noted county. Hope this helps!
