    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Johnsons in Lunenburg
    2. Hi, I'm not up on all the various Johnsons of Lunenburg Co who descend from Michael of Goochland and previously Henrico. Nor am I up on all those who aren't descended from him. But I will toss my few Johnsons into the ring to be counted. I descend from David Johnson, son of Joseph (son of Michael), who was born prob. bet 1730-1740 in, I would guess, Goochland Co. David shows up as an adult in court records in the late 1750s. He appears to have been married twice. I have no idea who his first wife was, but he seems to have had three children who survived to adulthood from that marriage: Mary, b about 1755, Morris, b about 1762, and Joshua, b bet 1766-1770. David goes in and out of tax records in Lunenburg Co and once turns up in Halifax Co. He owned land he bought from Josiah Shipp on Crupper Run, Lunenburg Co, which is right by the Coxes, Estes, and Chandlers and not far from the land of Joseph Johnson. Crupper Run seems to be west of the Middle Fork of the Meherrin River and was at one time called Robertson's Fork. David's second wife was called Rachel. She is the mother of Sarah, Hester, Charity, Samuel, Anny and Frances. The youngest of these children, Frances, was born in 1782, according to her record in the 1850 census in South Carolina. David and family seem to have left VA about 1787 and ended up in Edgefield District South Carolina by 1790 (he is enumerated in the census there). He died in 1797 in Edgefield. His wife, Rachel, died a year later. Morris seems to have come to Edgefield by the time his father died, but did not accompany the family. Not sure when Joshua arrived. All the sons were there in the first part of the 1800s. I have just recently had a little luck tracking down, I think, some of the descendants of his son, Samuel. I have a little information on the descendants of his other children and quite a lot on the family of his daughter, Anny, who is in my direct line. A number of the collateral relatives to this line either ended up in or passed through Edgefield, SC. Would be happy to share information with anyone who is researching this or collateral lines. 3. Note of Interest:: William Johnson patented Land in 1779 on Turkey Cocke Creek and would have to be 21 years of age:: so born before 1758::: Same age as Naum if I remember Right:: Naum- Naham was on 1785 Census of AMelia CO. age would be 21 so born before 1764) AC Johnson is a name of interest as it was said by some one I had corresponded with several years ago that an AC JOhnson in Kentucky was related to my Hudson Johnson. BUt they never got Back to me with any more info as they were moving and their Records were packed up. Also of Note On tax lists via deeds the Johnson, Hatcher, Wards I have found on Cross Deeds all Start in Brunswick::: William and Samuel Johnson had to have patented thier land on some Creek ( unknown at this time I am still Cross referencing) But in 1748 they are in Lunenburg Co. with 4 other Johnson Families two of which are off the Lines Of Michael Johnson as they Isaac and Joseph in 1756 or 59, they sell land that was owned my Michael Johnson::I have a good list know going on these two Off springs ( but not on what creek they owned Land)>> Back to thoughts:: Next Johnson is A Samuel Johnston in 1753 patenented Land on Wards Creek in 1753 in Lunenburg CO. but he doesn't appear on any Lunenburg or Halifax County Tithables:::1753-1770 These Balingers are going to be related some time as they Were all presberterians that Came with the Caldwell group that settled on Cubb Creek, with numerous lands ajoining Wards Creek. they bought over 16,000 acres. On first purchase in Lunenburg Co. Va I need an early copy of Ameilia County Titahbales and Tax list for the Johnsons on it.AS in 1750 All of the Wards and Cubb Creek people from 1748 Lunenburg Tithables are in AMelia COunty Deeds. IN 1777 Samuel Johnston (Nancys ) is now in Pittslyvania County for a short Time until Henry County was formed. The People did not move the County Lines kept changing on them, or they kept joining and rej-oining Counties. It is great to know everything we can on this Group of Johnson's I just wished there was a Male for a DNA Test. AS I believe this Whole Group comes from the First Two Johnsons Samuel and William on 1748 Tithable list of Lunenburg Co. as they both would've been born before 1727::(my cross dna on HUdson Johnston would match Johnsons of Isaac and Joseph Johnson) Note :::Hudson lived with the Only William and James Johnson in Henry County Tax list for 1778-1780 this indicates a family relations ip by blood ( either Father Son ,or Brother Brother ,Cousin Cousin etc) ::::: PS hopefully by Friday I will have more Locations for Johnson-Johnstons in 1740-1780 on where they lived and on What Creeks.Have assembled a lot of notes from everone.( Johnson-Johnstonss of Old Brunswick County::: Areas in 1776 Henry,Pittslyvania,Lunenburg,Halifax ,Charlotte, South End of Botetort County and Counties formed from them:: This taken from 1738 Brunswick Map sized and placed over a 1776 Va map::: What is funny is lines seem to run right down the river or Creek and one family on One side &other family branch is on the Other or at the Top of the Creeks that almost touch each other:::) Seems like the Johnson-Johnstons loved to settle at the top of the Creeks ::Tony ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen Wood <[email protected]> To: TJstubby <[email protected]>; Nancy Denty Breidenthal <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 20, 2003 8:04 AM Subject: Re: William Johnston/Samuel Johnson, et al > Nancy, didn't even think to ask where your Samuel Johns(t)on, d. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Affidavit of Descent
    2. Quan Pruitt
    3. Paul, Would the below statement be true for most states. Quan Affidavit Of Descent If a person owns property and that person dies intestate (without a will), it is normal to file an Affidavit of Descent. This Affidavit is a sworn statement that gives the name of the deceased land owner, the date of death and the names of the heirs of the decedent. Sometimes the Affidavit will also includes ages of the heirs and their addresses. An Affidavit of Descent will be filed and indexed with the deed records under the name of the decedent. Anytime that you locate an Affidavit of Descent, you should also check out the next few recorded deeds. Usually, if the person died without a will, the family doesn't get around to filing the Affidavit of Descent until they get ready to dispose of the real estate and some attorney informs them "by the way you need to file the Affidavit first." If this is the case, the deed conveying the real estate of the decedent will not only list the names of the heirs, but also the names of the spouses. Many times if the property has been held for an extended period of time or even allowed to pass through to the next generation, an Affidavit of Descent can give information on multiple generations. So next time you are in the deed room, check the grantor indices for Affidavits of Descent

    3. I just recently returned from a trip to Patrick County Court House. Having not been there in 3 years, I was surprised to find that records that I normally would have had access to are now restricted. I was so disappointment. One of the clerks in the office informed me that a privacy act was passed that restricted my access to records. Can anyone tell what was passed and what the restrictions are? Paul, are you there to explain. What I really wanted to get was copies of records of my grandfather's arrest in the 1920's. Those records are over 80 years old and grandfather has been deceased since 1958. What harm would it have done to allow me to look at them? Cynthia A. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Re: VA-SOUTHSIDE ] Where is TLC Genealogy?
    2. Hi, I had a similar experience with a lack of response from TLC back in November 2002. I placed an online order, got an automated reply acknowledging it, and then . . . nothing. I too tried calling (it had been disconnected back in late Nov or early Dec 2002), tried customer service via email, got no reply, eventually sent a fax, which did go through, but got no reply from that either. To date I have met several other people who had had similar experiences. This was my first contact with TLC (or non-contact might be a better description). I understood they were a reputable firm in the past. It's very disheartening to discover they aren't even responding at all, and even more that they have not taken down the website when they are clearly not responding to orders. Barbara Schenck

    3. I asked this same question on a SC mailing list last March. On Feb. 8th I placed an online order (according to their new web site it was the only way you could order) and received an e-mail order confirmation notice. I'd been a long time customer and had always received my orders promptly but after sending e-mail messages to the customer service and owner's addresses, I called the 1-800 number (which had been disconnected) and mailed a letter to the s-mail address. I never did get a response from anyone. So the news is not good and it's really sad to see such a great company end this way. 2. I have had to unsubscribe for a while--long vacation, etc, illness in the family--and have not kept up too well with the genealogical world. I have tried several times just now to access www.tlcgenealogy.com where in the past I have purchased a number of books of records of Southside counties, particularly Lunenburg and Halifax. Now this website seems to be among the missing. I tried google.com and still couldn't find the website. Does anyone have any news--good, I hope???? E.W.Wallace

    3. The following book is an excellent source for *clues* to early Virginia marriages.... Wilkerson, Eva Eubank, Index to marriages of old Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia, 1655-1900. (Richmond, Whittet & Shepperson, 1953) Note, however, it is stated in the Preface the marriages found within this book are implied by court records the author abstracted. Charlotte Tucker

    3. NOte in Charlotte Co. Deeds Oct 1779 a William Johnson is mentioned as having land on Bantrees Creek::What year was William and Hudson Together:: Chestnut Creek Flow into the Pigg River:::: So do the Following Creeks Snow Creek Turkey Cock Creek then into the Ranoake River the Roanok flow West::: where Wards Fork Cub Creek,Roanoke Creek Horsepen Creek,Turnip falling Creek,Seneco River,Otter River,Goose Creek,Blue stone and L. Bluestone, Then into Mecklenburg Co. Va into NC. Do you think they might have just followed the Roanoke River West and settled on the Tributarorys (sic) adjoining Rivers??? I sent this on to the Chat and WEb sites I am getting info From Thanks Tony Elizabeth must have something in the Land a Dowers Right??? Did WIlliam mary a cousin ,aunt or sister of Elizabeth Ballinger::: NOte a huge Presberterian Church came from New Jersey in 1740 and settled on Cubs Creek and on Wards Fork, property was bought by Note 1779 was a Land Grant by THomas Jefferson Governor of Va to William Johnston for 326 acres:: Samuel Sold this same amount of Land in March 1785 to Francis Hill of Prince Edward Co.This was given to WIlliam Jhnston and his Heirs forever date of grant Oct 29 1779 ----- Original Message ----- From: Nancy Denty Breidenthal To: TJstubby Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2003 9:16 PM Subject: Bantree Fork of Chestnut Creek Tony, Here's a question to post. I was recently looking through my Johnston notes and realized (DUD!) that the land on Bantree Fork of Chestnut Creek that Samuel and Elizabeth Johnston sold on 21 Mar 1785 must be the same parcel granted to William Johnston on 20 Oct 1779, described as "both sides on Bantree's Fork and Chestnut Creek" in Charlotte County. Both tracts were 326 acres. They must be the same. How did Sam come into the property? If through inheritance, where is the documentation? And why would he need his wife's agreement to the deed, i.e. her relinquishment of dower if the property had been inherited by Sam, not her? If he purchased the land, where is the deed? According to Blunt, Complete Index and Abstracts of the Henry County Order Books # 1 and #2, p. 128, there's supposed to be a deed from William Johnson to Sam on 28 Sep 1780; but I've never been able to locate the original on microfilm. Does any other researcher have the details? Nancy
