    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Alexandria Library-Rare CW Map Digitized & Online

    3. Alexandria Library-Rare CW Map Digitized & Online Visitors to the Alexandria Library, Special Collections have long admired the 1862 “Topographical Map of the Original District of Columbia and Environs: Showing the Fortifications around the City of Washington” by E. G. Arnold. Its pastel shades highlight the several wards of Washington, DC, water courses, and the original boundary of the District of Columbia including the 30 square miles of Northern Virginia that was ceded back to the Commonwealth in 1846. This is an exceptionally rare map; we had no idea how rare. According to the Spring/Summer 2003 (Vol. 15, No. 1) issue of “Washington History,” two days after the map went on sale in various shops in 1862, the U.S. War Department confiscated most copies. The same fate befell the copper plate that was used to print the original maps. In addition, the Department obtained the names of purchasers and seized the maps from the homes of private citizens to prevent it from falling into Confederate hands. The map identifies and locates 51 forts that defended Washington, DC during the Civil War. The legacy of these forts remains with such local place names as Fort Totten, a station on Metrorail’s Red and Green Lines, and Alexandria’s own Fort Ward Museum. We were a little nervous letting our treasure out of its frame and out of the Library, but a local printing company did an overhead color scan for us to digitize it. The full size image file took an hour to open on the printing company’s computer. We had them step it down to a 300 dpi image at about 1/3 the size of the original. There are likely other libraries with such rarities in their collections. Want to see it online? 3. I am a Johnson Researcher stuck on Hudson Johnson-Johnston in Henry Co. 1778-1779-1780 Tithable Lists, THere is so many Counties formed from Lunenburg Co. original from Brunswick I am trying to get discussion going on which lines are on What areas as the COunty Lines changed so much it is hard to follow a family. example is Wards Creek, the North and SOuth SIdes went into AMelia Co Va. by 1750 part of the South SIde of Wards Creek Came back 1756 into Lunenburg Co.THere are about 6 of us now in a discussion trying to share info with others to see if it might lead to More information Others are Karen from Charlotte Co. Va. formed from Luneburg Co.Va,Teresa ::Pittsylvania Co. Va formed from Lunenburg Co, Peg and Me from Henry Co Va ( Hudson Johnson) Nancy on Samuel Johnson-Johnston of Henry Co, and Pittsylvania Co:: Mary on Lunenburg Co, Brunswick Co. Va. Note :Marys line of Johnson and mine are of the Same Blood Lines off Michael Johnston died 1718 whose families are also in Lunenburg Counties first Tithable list ( We nowk now some are in Prince Edward County) mine and Pegs are in Henry Co.Va. A William Johnson, Samuel Johnson,Hudson Johnson ,James Johnston are part of the tithable lists of HEnry Co. Karen is studying William Johnson- JOhnstons::: Hudson Johnson lives with William Johnson in one of the Census, and in another with James Johnson::::: Nancy has advised that Samuel Johnston married Elizabeth Ballinger in 1778 Henry Co.Tithable List. Samuel also sold property the same acres owned by William Johnson ( possible Karens) on Bantree Creek of Chestnut Creek. Now Nancy advised that James Johnston ( only one James Johnson of Henry Co.Va) is Samuels Brother :: I don't know but someone sent me info that Samuel Johnson also inherited another possible brothers land ( in another County) John H.Johnson and was sued and returned the land. So some might find the e-mails confusing, but is is gathering info on the Johnsons of what was Lunenburg Co. and identifying the Cousin lines off Micheal Johnson and Rachel Watson. We welcome all discussion on these Johnson-Johnston families Thanks Tony ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, October 31, 2003 10:23 AM Subject: Johnson Families of VA Did you just post the information on the Johnson families to aide another, or are you also a Johnson researcher. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Looking for a clue.
    2. Carol Digby
    3. Oh, my gosh!! I expected a suggestion or two , but the response has been most heart-warming. I have received many wonderful suggestions, which I intend to follow up. The first criticism I got was not including the names. I really did not want you to do my leg work for me. Just some suggestions on what avenues I should pursue in my quest. But since you insist <Grin> here goes. Lewis BEAN was born approximately 1825 in Maryland to parents (unknown) whose origin was supposedly Holland. I have even written to a Bean in Holland, and he had not a clue of anyone who had migrated. So, the next record I have of Lewis BEAN is in Lee Township, Shenandoah County, Virginia. He marries HANNAH SHEETZ in 1852. Their oldest GEORGE M. BEAN is born in 1854.GEORGE M. has a liaison with CATHERINE WEAVER daughter of John and MAry Weaver of the same area which produces GEORGE THOMAS BEAN in 1873. GEORGE THOMAS is my grandfather. And, in the 1880 census, that poor child is not listed with either father George M., or mother, CATHERINE WEAVER.. GEORGE BEAN is already, by now, married to SARAH V. BARR, and they have started their own family. CATHERINE WEAVER is about to be married to ABRAHAM MILLER of Shenandoah Cty. Now, my problem is finding Lewis Bean's parents. In reading census reports from George BEAN from 1900, he states his father was born in Germany. Was Holland ever a part of Germany? And how would I find German BEANS? And, last and most important. Thank you, each and every one of you, for taking the time to respond. To have so many willing to help is just overwhelming. Carol

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Sam'l Johnston/"Betsy" Ballinger
    2. Helen Stewart
    3. I'm a descendant of Samuel Johnston (who d. Limestone Co, AL ca 1833) and Elizabeth (Betsy) Ballinger, b.ca 1758 and probably died before 1833, as she's not mentioned in her husband's will of 1832. In fact he may have had a second wife, and lost her as well, before writing his will, as NO wife is mentioned in it. I am writing to see if I can share any info re this family. I have a book on the Ballingers (Three Centuries of Ballingers in America, by Emma B. Reeves) with a lot of information on this family. I also have, from some pages copied from a book "The Baileys" a good deal of information about Samuel Johnston and his family. One item lists the siblings of Samuel, when a bro., John H. Johnston, dies intestate in March 1818. Another shows Samuel as respondent in a suit concerning a note, with son-in-law David Bailey as complainant, and lists places of residence, 1808-1815. Then, the will of Samuel, filed in 1832 in Limestone Co, AL, and probated in 1833. This lists his children, but doesn't mention a wife. A document in Aug. 1831 refers to wife Nancy (either a typo or he has a 2nd wife) this doc. is releasing all interest and claim to lands they inherited from John H. Johnson. I've had no knowledge of the ancestry of Samuel Johnston, so was very pleased to see the input on this site! I'll be watching, will be interested in trying to absorb the facts! And I WOULD be interested in hearing from Nancy Denty Briedenthal, if she has documentation of the marriage of Eliz. Ballinger and Sam'l Johnston. I have only 2nd or 3rd hand reference to someone's Bible. My connection/lineage is: daughter Patsy Johnston (b. ca 1780)m. Fleming Hodges. Their daughter Elizabeth (b. ca 1800) m. Benj. Cooper. Their daughter Frances Cooper (b. 1819) m. James A. Pruitt (Preuit) and went to, and died in, TX. Son Tolbert F. Preuit (b. 1844)m. Emma Barker, their son Paul A. Preuit (b. 1875) m. Matilda Grammer Roberts and their daughter Averil Preuit (my mother, b. 1906) m.,in 1928, Paul Plowman, my father. Other scraps of info: saw somewhere a note that father of Sam"l and Wm and ?? may have been Archibald. Will try to dig it out. Also, to Tony, you referred somewhere to Benj. Arnold/Anne Hendricks. This couple is in my husband's lineage. Helen Stewart

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Hening's Statues at Large - Early Virginia Laws
    2. On the Fauquier Co. rootsweb list, there has been discussion of Virginia probates, primogeniture, laws of inheritance, etc. Although a URL for a website was posted, and the URL was of interest, a questioner (with good reason) wanted to know more--particularly about exceptions to the general rules. The authority for early Virginia laws would be the codes themselves, and they are largely referred to as Hening's Statues at Large (going up to 1808). There are multiple volumes of these statutes, of course, but if you are really interested, you may want to order films of these volumes from the Family History Library at Salt Lake City, the approximately dozen films of the 13 volumes (I believe that is how many there are.) Suggestion; Go to the URL for LDS at www.familysearch.org Click on the link to the Family History Library catalog on the lower right. Do an author search. I have cut and pasted some of the info so that you can see the author's name. Incidentally, there is an index to the proper names which appear in Hening's statutes, and you may want to check that also. The statutes at rge, being a collection of all the laws of Virginia from the first session of the legislature in the year 1619 : published pursuant to an act of the General Assembly of Virginia, passed on the fifth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and eight Stmnt.Resp.by William Waller Hening AuthorsHening, William Waller, 1768-1828 (Main Author) Good luck in your searches. Genealogy leads us into reading records which we never thought of using, doesn't it? (Some of my personal favorites: deeds, probates, and court records, many of which point out family relationships and also give a time and a place.) E.W.Wallace

    3. Looking for information on Drury COLLIER, b. abt 1740-45? Brunswick Co VA; d. 1809 NC. Am trying to find out who he married, who his children were ( one son named Drury, possibly a daughter Sarah ; 3 other sons and one other daughter). Particularly interested in finding out if he had a daughter named Rebecca Collier, b. abt 1783 NC who married (probably in Lincoln Co NC) Reuben LOLLAR. Timeline for Drury Collier: 13 Nov 1759 - named in the will of his father William Collier in Brunswick Co VA. (note William was son of John Collier JR and Grace? LUCAS.) 28 Oct 1776 - Purchased 215 ac from John and Barnett Randle on Saw Scaffold Branch in Brunswick Co VA. 02 June 1778 - posted security for the estate of Benjamin Warren in Brunswick Co VA. (could his wife have been a Warren ? There are other Warrens who intermarried with the Colliers) Colonial America, 1607-1789 Census Index shows Drury Collier in Montgomery Co NC in 1780 1781 - witnessed the will of Christopher Christian in Montgomery Co NC. 1790 Anson Co NC, Fayette district: Collier, Drury........2-3-3-0-8 1793 - Witnessed the will of his cousin Also Collier in Northampton Co NC. 1800 Anson Co NC: Drury Collier .... 00001 / 00000 1809 Lincoln Co NC - will of Drury Collier filed. (listed in NC Wills; A Testator Index , by Mitchell, pg 103) For whatever reason, this will was never probated in Lincoln Co; could be a copy from another county because he had interests or heirs in Lincoln Co, or perhaps there wasn't enough estate left to probate if he had deeded his estate to heirs prior to his death.) In the 1810 census, Drury Collier (JR) is in Lincoln Co; he married 1817 in Lincoln Co, Rebecca SADLER. This family went to Perry Co MO. ) Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks. He is currently at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on the Neurology Floor. Please keep him in your thoughts. Thanks and have a great day! Hillary Hatcher (Danny Hatcher's youngest daughter)

    3. As always you guys are a great help to this newbie! I think I asked this before and I cannot find the response. In the 1800's if a person dies interstate or with out a will what would the term used for the process of distribution of that persons estate if you were looking for them or would that just depend on the state the property is in or the state the person died in. Sometimes I know what I need or what I am looking for just not the correct court term for that period in time. Thanks again, Quan
