    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Re: Searching for Ross, Green et al - When? Where?
    2. Thank you very much, E.W. for the tips. I have done all the census work I can at this time (as you will see by the dates below), and am at a stuck place for deeds (also see below). Isaac Green b. ? in ? will written in 1769 in St. Mark's Parish, of then Craven Co, SC. The witnesses to his will (Bartlett Henson and Andrew Hilton) were from Hanover/Louis Co, VA. I don't know excatly where Isaac Green came to SC from and am grasping at straws. Isaac's wife is unknown at this time but may have been an Elizabeth ? Their children were: Robert, George, John, Moses, Priscilla b. about 1740 in ? (married my Reuben Ross about 1759/1760 in ?), Sarah Ann (married Eli Norman), and Alsey (surname Lansdale per her father's will). Robert and George were named executors but only Robert appeared in probate court in May 1772 in St. Mark's Parish, SC Rueben Ross b. before 1740 in ? married Priscilla Green about 1759/1760 in ? Reuben apparently died before 1788 probably in SC, when Priscilla Ross was found in the 1788 tax list of Clarendon Co, SC with one poll. Priscilla died in 1796 probably in SC. I have no will for Reuben or Priscilla but do have Bible records for the births of their children and many of their grandchildren. I found some deed records and a will in Edgecombe/Halifax Co, NC in 1760 and 1761 that have Reuben Ross as a witness but I have no proof that he is my Reuben for, for sure. I believe that it is him because the people he witnessed for seem to appear in SC about the same time Reuben does, (or had children who did.) Reuben and Priscilla's children: Moses b. 9-26-1762, Elizabeth b. 3-16-1764, Benjamin b. 4-10-1766, Solomon b. 5-25-1769, Hannah b. 6-8-1771, Priscilla b. 6-16-1774 and Stephen b. 7-24-1776. Benjamin is my line- in the 1880 census of Burke Co, NC, Benjamin's daughter said he was born in SC- I have no proof otherwise but no record to show that Reuben was in SC in 1766 as the earliest land record I can find that even mentions him is 1771 in SC. Benjamin married Saphira Frizzell in 1794 in Lincoln Co, NC, his son, Reuben Moses Ross was born there in 1797. By 1800, the family lived in Burke Co, NC where their daughter Elizabeth was born @1802. Benjamin died in Burke Co, NC 1843. Saphira died after 1840 in same. If needed, I have quite a bit more info on the children of Isaac Green and Reuben Ross. Thanks again for any help you may be able to offer. Would really appreciate a look up if possible. Thanks, Audrey Orlando, FL Dear Audrey: The book I have is a hodge-podge of notes, kind of like you and I keep--only mine is all over the floor, instead of in nice notebooks. If you are looking for solid evidence for the persons you name, post your query again. You have given surnames, but you have no dates and no place. These three elements are necessary for a successful [we hope] query: Name, Date, Place. I am assuming you mean Hanover Co., but unless I (and certainly others) have some other info, you may be spinning your wheels. Hanover Co. was divided several times, and your people may be in an adjoining county. If you suspect your people were in Colonial Virginia, I have found one of the more solid pieces of evidence, especially for a burned county like Hanover Co., are the land patents. These land patents are listed on the Library of Virginia website (or at least were a few months ago--so many budgetary cutbacks, who knows whether they are still there or not). Tip: If indeed your people were in colonial Hanover Co., lots of the early deeds of Louisa Co., VA, which county was formed ca 1742 from Hanover Co., mention persons who reside or own land in Hanover Co. But, first, let's determine where your folks were when you first knew of them. Generally, we who volunteer at LDS centers and try to help persons with their genealogy, recommend this: Start with what you KNOW (have documentation for) and then move backwards SLOWLY in time, all the time accumulating evidence (documentation). One person who searches for others in a professional capacity asks persons who come in: Have you done your census work? The 1930 census is available on line, generally for a fee, but some LDS centers have a subscription to Ancestry.com which has the 1930 census. Start with that census and accumulate all you can from censuses (get printouts), and look at every column, and check out the nieghbors--that may be Aunt Minnie and her kids!!! E.W.Wallace

    3. My gr grandfather, Hamlin R. COLLINS, was born in 1805. I can trace a Hamlin COLLINS to Brunswick Co, Maherin Parish, in 1830 with a family. In 1840 I think this family moved to Halifax Co NC. I cannot trace them in 1850. Hamlin R. COLLINS married Rebecca POWERS in July 1856 in Halifax Co. NC. My grandfather would have been about 50 years old & men usually didn't wait that long to marry for the first time! I think something happened to his first wife and the children were grown when he married Rebecca. Can anyone help me with a first marriage for Hamlin R. COLLINS or any other information? Thank you. I found the ships passenger list of the Mary Galley and that he was the Captain and appeared before the court and was qualified endorsed and took the oath to the governor. If he was born in 1725 he would have been only 23 as a ship Captain which seems unlikely to me. I can find no patents or award of land and he seems to disappear between landing in Philidelphia on 7 September 1748 and 1755 in Charlotte Co., VA in 1755. 3. Exactly. She had used the following: "Family Records,Williams Family Bible, John Kerr Connally Papers, Southern Historical Collection" (Electronic: Hope Coslett Pees Seguin, Texas [email protected]), University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill." I hoped that you could perhaps locate the source and confirm the data that applied to those you were searching. There was, I'm sure you realize, more than one Nathaniel Williams listed in the material. If I didn't include that specific item, I'll resend it to you. As you noted the information was a source of Hope Coslett Pees, I have not confirmed it for myself since this particular line is not my own. I am related to Martha Jones whose first husband was a Williamson, they of course had children who had Williams spouses: 1-- Martha Jones [I] ( - ) sp-Thomas Williamson [I] ( -1755) . . . 2-- Nathan Williamson (1750- ) sp-Sarah Swift (1763- ) 3-- Elizabeth Williamson ( - ) sp-Samuel Smith [Jr.] (1790-1840) ,Rockingham County,North Carolina [my 2nd great granduncle] . . . sp-Thomas Nance [I] ( - ) <<<<------------------ 2-- Martha Nance (1765-1853) or of,Guilford County,North Carolina sp-Samuel Smith (1758-1839) ,Rockingham County,North Carolina [my 3rd great grandfather] . . . 1. Re: [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Nathaniel Williams - Witness - Lunenburg Co., VA 1762
    2. Thank you for jogging my memory concerning the children of Nathaniel Williams, probably of colonial Hanover Co., VA. You sent material which had been submitted by Hope Coslett Pees. Since Hanover Co. is a burned county, there is little information I have been able to confirm about Nathaniel Williams, reported son of John Williams the elder of colonial Hanover Co. (d. intestate ca 1735). Prior to his death, John Williams, Nathaniel's father, patented two parcels of land in Hanover Co., according to Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol III, if I remember correctly. John and Nathaniel show up as witnesses from time to time in the few remaining records of colonial Hanover Co. Unfortunately, this seeming Bible excerpt which is quoted in your e-mail does not tell me much about the parents, Nathaniel and wife Elizabeth [?] Williams, of some of these prominent persons. It does tell me when they became parents, and seems to confirm that Nathaniel was a real person. Yes, Hope Coslett Pees, the submitter of the information you forwarded, and I have been in communication from time to time. It is wonderful that this information about the children of Nathaniel Williams has been preserved. Hope is a descendant of Nathaniel's brother, Joseph Williams, a county official at various times, in colonial Lunenburg Co., VA. He died testate in Elbert Co., GA. Yes, the sons of this Nathaniel Williams, probably of Hanover Co., VA, a burned county, mostly became rather prominent in their communities. Robert Williams is said to have resided and died in Pittsylvania Co., VA. He married his deceased cousin's widow, the former Sarah Lanier, who had previously married Joseph Williams [son of Daniel] in Granville Co., NC (details furnished on request). Here is some information about John Williams, son of Nathaniel. Some say that he is the person called Col. John Williams in Caswell Co. records. Catherine Lindsay Knorr MARRIAGES OF CHARLOTTE CO, VA 1764-1815 [Published by author: 1951], p. 90 9 March 1767. John Williams and Betsey Williamson. Sur. Nathaniel Williams. p. 5. Question: Is Nathaniel Williams the father or the brother of John Williams, later known as Col. John Williams of Surry Co., NC? Nathaniel Williams MAY be the person named in a Charlotte Co., VA document as Nathaniel Williams, Jr. This man is from time to time referred to in Caswell Co., NC records as Col. John Williams. Here is some limited information about Nathaniel Williams, son of Nathaniel Williams the elder. Nathaniel Williams and his probable paternal uncle and cousin (Joseph Williams and son Matthew J. Williams) were in or adjacent to Surry Co., NC during the Revolution. Surry Co. 2. Thank you, Brownie, for the information regarding Williams, Jouett, and Wingfield from your book SOME ANCIENT LANDOWNERS IN ST. MARTIN'S PARISH HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Norine Campbell Gregory. Upon reading a review of this book in a recent issue of Newsletter of the Virginia Genealogical Society, I purchased the book, but I was sorely disappointed in the research (or lack thereof) of the family of John Williams of Hanover Co., previously of Henrico Co., part of the latter county becoming Goochland Co. Of course, the researcher had compiled this information for her own use and really not for publication. All of us gather secondary and traditionary material, but I guess I am extra cautious: I try NOT to draw conclusions based on tradition, or if I do I clearly label it tradition, and I try in every way possible to either prove or disprove the tradition. Some of the material in the referenced book contains sources, but MUCH of it does not. I kind of wish I had not purchased the book. But, to be fair, I should go over the material for persons who MAY have been neighbors of the Williamses and others of my lineage who clustered there. E.W.Wallace

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Any GOODE family researchers?
    2. S. Howe
    3. Am researching the GOODE families that were in Henrico, Lunenburg, Charlotte, Caroline and Bedford Co. William GOODE, was born in Henrico Co. ca 1700, s/o Samuel GOODE. William and his wife, Pheby, are of Lunenburg Co in 1751, Charlotte in 1769. His estate is appraised in Caroline Co. 8 Feb 1770. No will has been found. William, Edward, Richard and Thomas GOODE appear in the Caroline records from 1755 forward. Edward GOODE's will was written 28 Mar 1763, proved in the Caroline Co. August Court, 1763. A copy of that will is found in the book "Williamsburg Wills", W. Crozier, 1954. He lists his wife as Martha, and indicates four children: Ann, Richard, Edmund, and Martha. Exr. Thomas SHIP. Witnesses: Richard GOODE, Betty BRANGHILE. Without being able to see the will, I am unable to determine if his name is Edward or Edmund. In the book, "Virginia Cousins" by G. Brown Goode, William and Pheby GOODE are listed as parents of three children: (1) John GOODE = Francis HUNTER; (2) William GOODE; and (3) Edmund GOODE = Sarah BRANCH. Edmund GOODE = Sarah BRANCH is my line, and the listing in "Virginia Cousins" is incorrect. The Bedford Court records of 22 Oct 1771, indicate that Edmund and Richard GOODE are orphans of Edmund/Edward GOODE, decd. The children are bound out to Richard DURRETT, (who appears to be the husband of Martha DURRETT). I believe that Martha DURRETT is the widow of Edmund/Edward GOODE, Sr. Would like to correspond with anyone researching these families. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Nathaniel Williams - Witness - Lunenburg Co., VA 1762
    2. Dear Researchers, particularly of colonial Virginia, Can you help me identify Nathaniel Williams, who, in 1762, was a witness of Lunenburg Co., VA Deed Bk 7-149? The deed was from William Shelton, Albemarle Co. (grantor) to Tyree Glenn (grantee) of Lunenburg Co. Other witnesses were Smithson and Jeremiah Glen. Comments: William Shelton and Jeremiah Glen, the latter probably a kinsman of Tyree Glenn, were close associates of the Robert Harris and Mourning Glen family of colonial Louisa and Albemarle Cos., VA. Could Nathaniel Williams be a brother of Joseph Williams, who was a county official--off and on--of colonial Lunenburg Co., VA? Is there any proof? I have not found a land patent where he is a patentee. He shows up only as a neighbor in the patents of others. Brother Joseph Williams's wife was the former Henrietta Jouett, and many of these families had clustered together in the early days in Hanover Co., VA. I suspect--but cannot prove--that Nathaniel Williams, living in 1762, is son of John Williams I who died intestate ca 1735 in Hanover Co. (administration bond). I can find few records which mention Nathaniel Williams. One rent roll of Hanover Co. dated 1763 lists Nathaniel Williams, and he appears once, I believe, in an account in St. Paul's Parish. In Hanover Co., 30 years prior to 1763, Nathal. Williams and John Williams, and John Wingfield were witnesses to this deed: Hanover Co. court records 1733-1735: p. 31-32 Indentures. 1 Mar 1733 I John Matlock Senr of Hanover Co., planter, for Love and good will I bear to my loving Daughter, Mary wife to Benjamin Johnson; 50 a. in sd. Co. of Hanover... small branch called Tusocky Branch. John Matlock Senr. Wit: Nathal Williams, John Williams, John Wingfield 1 Mar 1733 ack. by John Matlock Senr. John Williams, who patented two parcels in colonial Hanover Co., is believed to be father of Nathal. Williams. Subsequently, John Matlock deeded property near Charles Swamp to his son George Matlock, same date. Same witnesses. Thanks for any info you can share with me. For newbies: Don't ask me about Williamses of later date. I do not have a Vast Database of Williamses. You are on your own!!! Sorry! E.W.Wallace PS: This is going to Harris-Hunters who are linked to Sheltons and Glen[n]s and who have many males named Tyree Harris. Also one of the daughters of Robert Harris and wife Mourning Glen[n] married John Jouett. These Jouetts are believed to be the parents of John Jouett who rode many miles during Revolutionary War days to warn Thomas Jefferson that the Tories were on their way.

    3. An amendment known as the "Grandfather Clause was passed in North Carolina 8/2/1900. A person registering to vote could prove literacy or state that he, his father or grandfather had voted on or before January 1, 1867. I have only a partial list and I would like to have a complete list. My list is for Halifax Co, townships of Butterwood & Faucett. I need Brinkleyville & Littleton. There are over a 100 names on my list with the ages of individuals with his father's age or grandfather's age. A good tool for genealogy. I saw this document when I was in Virginia in October, but I cannot remember where. Elizabeth
