Hello, Janet Hunter and others--Janet, I don't know anything about your Harrells but I have a somewhat similar situation, with my Robert Pryor. He was son of John Pryor (1694-1771, b.VA d. NC) and Margaret Gaines (b.ca 1700 VA, d. ca 1780 NC). He moved to NC ca 1755, m. Patience Lewis Pope. Robert was b. ca 1720 in VA, Patience b. ca 1730 in NC. Robert died INTESTATE, in 1771, in Granville Co, NC. In May 1772, Thos. Mutter & Co was appt. admin. of the estate. Not until 1780 was a guardian appt. for Robert's 4 children, Absalom, Olive, ELIZABETH and Pleasant. I'm trying to trace Elizabeth, I think she returned to VA by 1787, possibly to family, (Pryors, or Gaines's or Greene's, her paternal grandparents) in time to marry Joseph Grammer, in Charlotte Co., in 1787. The guardian appt. in 1780 was Robert's brother, John Henry Pryor. But in 1784, he was removed as guardian. In 1785, Willis Roberts was appt. guardian of Pleasant, the youngest son. I have no record of whether Eliz. was also under his guardianship, possibly she was of age. Can you tell me about accessing the probate records of NC, is there anything on line?? I feel sure Elizabeth received an inheritance, both her father Robert and grandfather John were generous with their children. And possibly records would say when she came of age, and was "released" from guardianship! I have the book "A Pryor Family Narrative" but Elizabeth, and her sister Olive, are untraced. I want to prove that this Elizabeth Pryor is indeed the one who married Joseph Grammer. Any info much appreciated! Helen Stewart
Hello Everyone, I am exploring whether or not my Mary Harrell b. ca 1780 was the daughter of a Lemuel Harrell and his wife Elizabeth Hargrove. I already have all of these folks living within a few miles of each other, etc. in Eure, Gates Co. NC. Lemuel Harrell died around 1782 and his wife married (2) Lewis Sparkman, who in 1798 was chosen as guardian by one Mary Harrell. Lemuel & Elizabeth had only two daughters, one of whom was a Mary. In the probate records (files, affadavits, etc.) I obtained at the NC State Archives, there is a notation that Lemuel's property was to be divided between his two daughters. In 1800 possible daughter Mary Harrell married Mills Landing, who already had property of his own. That property of Mills, who died intestate in 1802/3, was sold by his daughter and only child, Elizabeth (Landing) Marsh in 1823 - matching deeds, location, description, acreage, etc. -- and no further sales by her have been found. After Mills Landing died, his wife Mary married Uriah Eure, Jr. Am I correct in assuming that throughout both marriages, if my Mary Harrell were the daughter of Lemuel Harrell and Elizabeth Hargrove, she would have maintained ownership of the land inherited from her father after his death, and therefore I should be able to find a deed/estate trail somewhere later down the line? If Mary (Harrell) Landing Eure died intestate, would the land be divided equally among all her children, with her husband getting a dower? I have found no will or probate records for Mary Eure that fits as a Uriah Eure's wife, but I have not examined deeds for much beyond 1810. Thanks in advance. As you can see, I am considering possibilities for further research avenues and exploring the path of this piece of land seems to hold promise, although my still incomplete efforts in finding the identity of all the holders of ten shares of the estate of Nicholas Robertson, d. 1794, in Granville Co. suggests this will be something of a task. Best Regards, Janet Hunter
I am looking for anyone researching the Col. Joseph Bridger line from Isle of Wight. Are there any descendants? I am especially looking for any who still carry the surname of Bridger. There are funds available to pay for a Y-DNA test for our BRIDGER DNA Project. http://small-stuff.com/BRIDGES/ Any help is appreciated. Julia French Wood
Hi - Is anybody familiar with the King line in Isle of Wight Co, VA from about 1640 thru 1735? Generally, the men are Henry, John and Robert - almost exclusively. Associated families may be Jones, Smith and Wilkinson. I am specifically interested in an Arthur King who is listed in an undated Will by his father Robert King Snr. of Isle of Wight Co. I am a direct descendant of an Arthur King (d. 1718 - intestate) of Westmoreland Co, VA. It appears that Robert King Snr died in 1725, 7 years after the death of 'my' Arthur King. An interesting settlement in 1735 transfers the land willed by Robert King Snr to his son Arthur - deceased, to another son Robert King Jnr. My proposal is that Robert Snr's Will was written prior to Arthur's death in 1718 and was not updated. Therefore, when Snr died, the property passed as willed to Arthur and then immediately to Jnr - only the legal work taking from 1725 to 1735 to complete. With the exception of Snr's Will and the 1735 transfer from Arthur deceased to Jnr, there does not appear to be any other mention of Arthur King in Isle of Wight Co; however there are several mentions of Arthur King in Westmoreland and neighboring Richmond Co. So - are these the same Arthur King? Also - interesting is that Arthur's grandson Arthur King married Elizabeth Wilkinson - an associated surname from Isle of Wight Co. Off the subject - I have noticed more occasions of men in Isle of Wight Co whom are named Arthur than possibly all other counties that I have researched combined. Is this an association with the English King Arthur? If anybody has any ideas on this, I would be interested in hearing them. Thanks Donald King
I think there is a New Hope Christian Church which is on the edge or Lunenburg Co. or it may be in Brunswich Co. down in the Danieltown area. If I can find out more about it, I will. ******************************************* Friends, Ann Gaulding sent me the above information. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Thank you Ann, you are a dear. Thank you, Margaret
Hi Rob, I should have stated that the marriage certificate was filed in Lunenburg County, Lunenburg, VA. I found it at the courthouse there. You were kind to respond, thank you. Regards, Margaret Driskill [email protected]
Hello dear cousins, friends, and fellow researchers, Do you have any information on the above church, please? My grandparents were married there in 1904. Regards, Margaret [email protected]

Here are some notes on a Jeter family of Granville Co., NC. Mrs. Jeter, if I remember correctly, was a Dudley, a sister to Mrs. Samuel Snead [Jane Dudley] of colonial Granville Co., NC and later of Person Co., NC. Jane (Dudley) Snead is probably my ancestress, based on preponderance of evidence. Her husband made a deed of gift to my ancestor, Samuel Farrar Williams, whose first wife was Hannah Snead. The deed of gift named eight children, omitting the name of a ninth child, who is probably my ancestor. That is where the preponderance of evidence comes in, based on research of Henderson Co., KY where my ancestor migrated ca 1806 (according to his rejected Rev War pension). In: Granville Co. Wills, Estates, Bk. 4, this deed of gift appears: "Samuel Sneed of Person County, NC to Samuel Farrar Williams of Granville Co., for 5 pds, 6 negroes, cattle and furniture for the use of his children: William, John, Alfred, Dudley, Peggy, Nancy, Betsy, and Ginsey Williams, for rearing and educating them and only for that purpose. Aug 1, 1796. Wts; Reuben Morse, Thomas Jordan." (Zae Hargett Gwynn, Abstracts of the early deeds of Granville County, North Carolina, 1746- 1765) If you use this information in your genealogies, or webpages, please cite the sources. This is expected of ALL genealogists (amateur or professional) these days. SAMUEL JETER (d. by 1802) There are variant spellings of the surname Jeter, including Jeator, which is found in Caroline Co. VA in 1760. (Ambrose, John, and Thos. are found in Caroline Co., VA Order Book, 1759-1763. This has not been read as of 2/99.) The surname Jeter is found in 1760 in these Virginia counties: Amelia, Lunenburg, Halifax, Onslow Co., NC, Essex. The full name, Samuel Jeter, is found in these two counties: Caroline, Essex. The name William Geter [Jeter] is found in Lunenburg Co. (DB 3-416) (Source: TLC Genealogy, VIRGINIA IN 1760; A RECONSTRUCTED CENSUS [Miami Beach: TLC Genealogy, 1996]) Samuel Jeter was the husband of Mary Dudley, sister of Jane Dudley Sneed, wife of Samuel Sneed, and sister of Elizabeth Dudley Lea, wife of Andrew Lea, believed to be later of Caswell Co., NC. Is this the Jeter to whom reference is made in the land patent of Lydall Bacon, Lunenburg Co., VA, in 1768? (No Dudleys are listed in the Lunenburg Co. patent books. 1746-1916. However, William Dudley, brother-in-law of Samuel Jeter, married in Lunenburg Co. in 1784. Therefore, the Jeters and the Dudleys may have lived in adjoining counties.) (Adapted from TLC Genealogy, LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA LAND PATENTS, 1746-1916 [Miami Beach: 1990], p. 77) A William Jeter, Jr. received Virginia Patent D-541, 1 Feb 1761, for 401 A on branches of Little Creek [Lunenburg Co.]. (Ibid., p. 81) As late as 1770, a Samuel Jeter was purchasing land in Lunenburg Co. It is unknown whether this was his residence. Lunenburg Co. At one time Samuel Jeter lived in Halifax Co., NC as indicated in Granville Co. Possibly another son of the Jeters was Dudley Jeter, who was a witness to a deed of James Willis to John Hogan, 8 Feb 1775 (DB K-241) near Reedy Branch. (Timothy W. Rackley, GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEEDS 1772-1778 [Kernersville, NC: Privately published, 2001], p. 54) Approximate Death Date of Samuel Jeter From "Claims of British Merchants after the Revolutionary War": "Jeter, Samuel. Granville Co. L1.11.2. 1 May 1776. Died about the Year 1793 or 1794. Left considerable property which was divided among his children, vizt. - Dudley, now in Wake County; Robert, now in Granville County; Abner, now in Georgia; and two daughters who are all at this time in good circumstances. He was solvent at the Peace and until his death. Informant: William Hicks Jr. of Granville Co. (56)" The original number of the claim (on microfilm) is in parenthesis. (Ransom McBride, "Claims of British Merchants after the Revolutionary War," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL, Aug 1993, p. 154.) That Samuel was deceased by 1802 seems to be indicated by the entry in Granville Co. court minutes, November court 1802: Robert Jeter proved deed from Samuel and Jones [must be Jane] Sneed and Mary Jeter to Robert Dudley for land in Nottoway County, VA dated 25 Jan 1802. (Source: Z. H. Gwynn, COURT MINUTES OF GRANVILLE CO., NC 1746-1820, p. 199). Stephen Sneed (whose mother was the former Jane Dudley), acted as his father's attorney in the settlement of the estate of William Dudley of Nottoway Co, VA. Robert Dudley is believed to have been the son of William Dudley, deceased, and his probable wife, Rachel Dudley. Possibly he was a brother. The name of Samuel Jeter appears on the 1769 list of Granville Co. taxables. Granville Co. Deed P-179 [incomplete] shows Jeter made a deed of gift to his grandchildren, Caty Davis and Augustine Jeter Davis, daughter and son of Augustine Davis, late of the State .... Jeter appears in the 1786 census of Granville Co., Ragland's District. Samuel Jeeter [sic] 1-2-1-7-3-14 1st figure - white males 21 to age 60 2nd figure - white males under 21 and over 60 3rd figure - white females of every age 4th figure - blacks of each sex from 12 to 50 5th figure - blacks upwards 50 and under 12 6th figure - no. of inhabitants (total no. in each household) ("Granville Co.:-1786 Census (140 Families Left Out of 1790 Census of Granville Co." According to my Road Atlas, it appears (sadly <smile>) that Blue Ridge is on the border between Bedford and Botetourt Co. It is about 10-12 miles north est of Roanoke (mostly north) on state route 221. it is just down the ridge from the Blue Ridge Mtn parkway which transverses the ridge at the top, ended around Front Royal. Have you tried mapquest.com. or yahoo.com's map link? (Also the GNIS link that Bob Juch just recommended, though I've had some trouble periodically with it being down lately). Good Luck! Janet Hunter

HI Mbmackie, Thanks. I actaully do that google search about evey other month for the last 4 years just to see if there is anything new. It is amazing to me just how many Reuben Ross' there were in the late 1700's. I had not realized that it was such a common name back then, not to mention Moses, and Isaac Green--that one is as common as John Smith, I think. Thanks again, Audrey In a message dated 11/10/2003 3:26:06 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I'll try this again. You'll find Reuben, Moses, and Isaac in NC. Search in GOOGLE. Like this: "Reuben Ross" "Moses Ross" "Isaac Green" There's a plethora of information on all of them, especially Isaac Green.
Hello Everyone: Those of you who are working on your lines back to your 1600s American Ancestors will find the1600s Ancestors Data Base to be of great help. My recent posting updates to the Data Base has taken it to over 26,500 Ancestors who have descendants living today. I have also added several National Societies who have proven many of these Ancestors. Also at this time a few new respected Reference works that contain thousands of sources including some of the early colonists who have Royal Blood lines. All the entries are coded to indicate to which reference work or which National Society has at least one of their proven lines. Several of the National Societies have over 20 different lines from a single Ancestor. When you enter the 1600s Ancestor Data Base be sure to look at the top of each data page for the link that takes you to the "Data Base Information Page" Here you will find the codes and references listed and how to use them.
