    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] CHAPPELL/YOUNGER, Peter & Allie Halifax CO. VA 1870 > 1900
    2. Greetings, I am an Afro-American. My Great Grand parents were Peter and Allie/Alice Chappell of Halifax Co. Va. Christopher Carlton a white slave holder died in 1824 (probably in King + Queen County) Va. In his will Christopher willed to his daughter Polly Carlton "one Negro Esther and her future increase." Dolly died July 7, 1858, without leaving husband, or children. In Jan of 1859 the increase of "one Negro Esther," the slave willed to Polly Carlton, were bought by Joel Younger from Polly's surviving siblings and the children of Polly's dead siblings for $1,500 dollars. "One Negro Esther" was mentioned in the papers apparently only to establish that Joel was purchasing her (Esters) future increase (I am assuming that Esther was dead by then). That sum of $1,500, bought my g-grand mother Allie and her children, Willis, Daniel (my grandfather ), Eppa, George, and Henry. Joel Younger had in fact had possession of Allie before he officially bought her in 1859, because I found in "Slave Birth Records," Allie giving birth to three of her children, in 1853, 1855, and 1858, with the Slave holder/owner listed as Joel Younger. In the 1870 Census for Halifax Co. VA, Peter aged 40y and Allie aged 35 were found with the following children: Willis 20y. George, 15y, Henry 13y, Peter (Lee) 12y, Doctor 10y, Davis 9y, Bell 7y, Willy Ann 5y, Edward 3y, and Horace 6mo. Daniel, my grandfather and son of Peter & Allie using the surname Younger, was living nearby with his wife Sue (Younger). In 1880 I again find Peter 50y, and Allie/Alice 50 y, with children Bell 18y, Willie 16, Doctor 20, Lee (Peter) 22y, Henry 23y, Eppy 24y, Edward 12y, Horace (Braxton) 11y, Milly 7y, and Corer 4y. Other than the births of children to Allie in 1853, 1855 and 1858, and the sale of she and her children, I found no other records whatsoever of Peter or Allie before 1859, or after 1900 . Peter was found in the Personal Property Tax list up till 1899, but was missing from the 1900 tax list, so I assume he died between 1899 and 1900. Allie, wife of Peter was missing from the 1900 Census, so I assume that she too was dead by 1900. I don't know yet where Peter the hubby of Allie came from, or how they wound up with the name Chappell. Perhaps Joel Younger, who held 35 slaves in 1860, bought Peter from a Chappell family. Thanks for your time, Larry ============================================================ SEARCHING HALIFAX CO. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Ancestry Daily Newsletter
    2. Although I am not currently a subscriber to any of the databases offered by Ancestry.com, I do subscribe to their Daily Newsletter, which is free, even to non-subscribers. Of course, much of it advertises Ancestry.com products, including the online databases, but there is a daily column, generally (if not consistently) by George G. Morgan, a professional genealogist. His columns are well-written, full of ideas, and this day it is full of Thanksgiving thanks given in behalf of all genealogists, but he speaks specifically for himself. Today he lists all the things that he as a genealogist is thankful for, and the list is long. An example, he is thankful the Social Security Administrations's vast databases and the Soundex and Miracode which allow us to access later censuses, and also to all the persons who make accessible microfilms of records for us genealogists to search There are many other items also. Although many persons are anti-Government these days (too much taxes, we say), we should thank the US government for the internet. My friend, now deceased, who has written many biographies, said he as an employee of the Defense Department used the internet for many years in his capacity with the Defense Department. I suggest you subscribe to this newsletter, at least for a time. I am sure you insert -Request in the address just preceding the @ mark. Just a suggestion. [email protected]

    2. Hello All, I wonder if anyone might have any resource that would cover this: In 1816, Stephen and Martha Sorsby, who were then living in Northampton Co, NC were said to have sold 263 in Surry Co, VA to someone. Would that transaction have been recorded in Northampton Co, NC or Surry Co, VA or both? Might anyone have a resource that would show that transaction? Thanks sooooo much! Audrey p.s. 2. Found some more infor on family in Revolutionary Patriots of Buckingham Co., VA by Carl Coleman Rosen. Pg. 93/94. Gevedann (Gevidon, Gevandin), John W884 (Mary) Private B. in Buckingham Co, VA in 1757. Lived there until 1823 when he moved to Shelby Co.,Kentucky where he lived 3 years, then moved to Henry Co. Kentucky. Entered Rev. Service in Buckingham Co, VA in Oct 1776.( Will not type the whole service record but he witnessed the surrender at Yorktown.) A Jan. 31, 1785 Goochland Co., VA marriage bond lists John Gevidon as married to Mary Mims, Security Drury Mims. Widon states that her husband died April 17, 1835. She applied for and received a pension. Shadrick M. Gevidon declared on Sept 1838 that he was the son of John Gevidon and Mary and thinks he was born in 1785. Sandra W. Due

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Gevaudon/Gefferdon/Jeffedon
    2. On page 61 of Ancestors Along the James by Billie Redding Lewis, Judith Martin married (1) Thomas Gevaudon, sometimes seen as Gefferdon and Jefferson, a family who married into the ancestral Robinson family. Thomas Gevaudon died in 1730/1 and the following year, sometime between October, 1731 and 1732, Judith married Rene Chastain. Issue from first marriage, John Jeffedon (as spelled in his grandfather Martin's will.) All of these families were of French Huguenot descent. On page 119, we find that Judith Chastain and husband Rene Chastain Sr. moved to that part of Albemarle Co. that became Buckingham Co. Early Buckingham Co., VA Legal Papers on pg. 8, is an indenture (deed) dated 1785 between Isaiah Charoon of Buckingham Co. and Isham Miles. John Gevedeon was a witness. The 1810 census of Buckingham Co lists Joseph Gevoden. Hope this gives you new directions. Sandra W. Due

    3. Sarah, I found this: Goochland County, VA - Misc Deeds and Wills, 1728 DEED 26 MARCH 1728 MATHEW AGEE OF ST. JAMES PARISH, GOOCHLAND CO., AND PETER BRUCE OF SAME, FOR L 5, 130 ACRES IN SAME PARISH, ON SOUTH SIDE OF JAMES RIVER BOUNDED BY SOUTH SIDE OF JONES CREEK, GIVODAN'S LINE, ANTOINE RAPINE, STEPHEN MONFOND AND THOMAS TURPIN, WITNESS. RECORDED JUNE 18 1728 ANNE, WIF EOF MATHEW AGEE , RELINQUISHED HER DOWER RIGHT. ******************************************************************** At least there was 'someone' with the surname, Givodan who owned land in 1728 in Goochland County. Back up about 20 years from your Thomas Givodan's marriage and you have 1774 as a possible year for Thomas' birth. Above deed with that Givodan owning land, and that Givodan could be your Thomas's father(around 50 years old) or even Thomas's grandfather, (around 70 years old). A good county to start investigating. Goochland was formed in 1727 from Henrico. Good luck, Margaret [email protected]
