He was born in the town of Bedford, on the 9th of January, 1651, and died at his home, 'Bedford', in Stafford county, in October, 1701. He came to Virginia about 1670; was a lawyer of prominence, a large planter, merchant, and shipper. He married, on the 1st of May, 1674, Sarah Tucker, who was born in Westmoreland county on the 2d of August, 1663; she was therefore at the time of her marriage not quite eleven years old. It is said that her husband sent her to England, immediately after their marriage, to complete her education. Colonel Fitzhugh left six children, among whom he divided a very large estate." One of the six children, Col. William Fitzhugh (1686-1713/4), married Ann Lee (1683i-1731/2), who subsequently m. Captain Daniel McCarty. More information on the Fitzhughs appears in W.M.
