Our Daniel was born 1679 and married Elizabeth (Pope) Payne in 1699. I doubt very much that he was married at age 18 to someone named Barbara/y who promptly died. Note too that the Daniel who sold the land in this record used a mark, therefore was probably illiterate. The Daniel (1679-1724) who became speaker of the House of Burgesses was well educated and signed with a handsome flourish. It seems likely that there was another Daniel in the Northern Neck, though I don't know who he was or whether the two were related. Daniel and Barbary disappeared after this land transaction. Unfortunately, the name Daniel McCarty was not particularly rare in 17th-century Virginia.
