    1. Re: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Daniel McCarty & wife Barbara
    2. Kathleen Much
    3. Captain Daniel McCarty (1679-1724) married twice. Both wives were widows. In 1699 he married Elizabeth (Pope) Payne (1677-1716), who had four children and a stepdaughter by her first husband, William Payne. Daniel and Elizabeth had eight children. On 27 May 1719 Daniel married Ann (Lee) Fitzhugh (1683-1731/2). She had three children by her first husband, Col. William Fitzhugh, and one by Daniel who apparently died young. To confuse matters, Daniel's eldest daughter, Anna Barbara McCarty, had married in 1715 John Fitzhugh of "Marmion", William's brother. So when Ann married Daniel, her sister-in-law became her stepdaughter. I don't know who Sarah Payne might be. She doesn't fit into the McCartys or Paynes in my database. Captain Daniel McCarty died 4 APRIL, not 4 May, 1724. His children were, in order, Anna Barbara m. John Fitzhugh and Adam Crump Dennis m. Sarah Ball Katherine m. Capt. Samuel Peachey Daniel of Westmoreland m. Penelope Higgins and Elizabeth (--) Smith Billington m. Anne Barber Winifred m. Robert Massey Sarah m. Thomas Beale IV Thaddeus d. unmarried in 1731 (age 19) Ann predeceased her mother, Ann (Lee) McCarty Probably your Lettice McCarty is an error for Lettice Fitzhugh (1707-1732), Ann Lee's daughter by her first husband. Lettice had a brother Henry (d. 1742) and a sister Sarah (d. 1743). Sarah m. Edward Barradall, Lettice m. Major George Turberville, and Henry m. Lucy Carter. A passage in Hayden seems to indicate that Sarah Ellen Chinn m. Col. Thaddeus McCarty, but this inference is wrong. Billington McCarty's son Thaddeus (1739-1787) m. Ann Chinn. His cousin Thaddeus (1739-1812), son of Dennis McCarty, m. Sarah Elizabeth Richardson. Possibly someone conflated the two Thaddeuses and their wives. I don't know what became of Sarah Ellen Chinn, daughter of Rawleigh Chinn and Easter Ball, but she didn't marry any McCarty whom Bill McCarty and I were able to track down. All of this family is covered extensively in _The McCartys of the Northern Neck_. A number of libraries own copies, including the DAR Library in Washington, the Clayton Library in Houston, and the Mary Ball Washington Library in the Northern Neck. I think Bill donated one to the Library of Virginia in Richmond, too. Kathleen Much On Sat, Aug 13, 2011 Janean wrote: > > Kathleen, while we are on this particular person....
