    3. The McCarty ledgers (horizontal tombstones) at Yeocomico Church were badly defaced, and Elizabeth's was in fragments in Daniel's grave. Bill and I reconstructed the family from the inscriptions and other documentary evidence, plus some sensible inference (such as ages at marriage). Children, named on Elizabeth's stone among other places: Anna Barbara was born 30 Nov 1700 or 1701 (we believe her parents married in Oct 1699 (not 1698), and so either 1700 or 1701 is possible; she married in 1715), died 12 Dec 1737. Maj. Dennis was born 7 Nov 1703, died 25 Mar 1742. Katherine was born -- Mar 1705, died between 1721 and 1726. Daniel was born about 1707, died before 26 Jun 1744. Twins Billington and Winifred were born 1709; Billington died before 1 Jul 1745 and Winifred after 22 Sep 1740. Sarah was born 1710, died after 17 May 1729. Thaddeus was born 1712, died 7 Feb 1731. Because of wills and other documents, we decided that Penelope (Higgins) McCarty's child mentioned on the ledger died, probably at birth or in infancy, and that Daniel's only surviving child was by Elizabeth (--) Smith. Had Daniel's son Daniel been Penelope's child, he would have inherited from her relatives. He did not. The Brooke Payne book makes a couple of errors in transcribing Elizabeth's ledger, most particularly in giving her birthdate as 1667. Bill McCarty saw the fragment many years ago and said it clearly read 1677. Penelope was the daughter of Augustine, not Christine, Higgins. Edward White is correct in saying that all this is covered extensively in Bill's and my book, _The McCartys of the Northern Neck_. I don't propose to type it all in again on this list. Of course we are happy to hear of any corrections if people find new documentary evidence. Kathleen Much
