Hello, Edward White ...If you are near Kinsale, the below info might be of interest to you, as well as others on the list. In the Daniel McCarty Will, he mentions having acquired "Flint's Mill". I think I recall this property was passed to his son, Daniel, via his Will. Now, below is a later Deed that tends to indicate this mill was near Cherry Poinrt & Mundy's Point (which I believe is just across the line from Westmoreland in Northumberland), near Kinsale .... Just wondering if the whereabouts of this mill is currently known from any foundation remains, etc. ? F-361; Mr. Newton Kenn of Northumberland Co., 51 A. in said Co. Surv. Also, it's Interesting there's an un-named child by Penelope Higgins McCarty...Do we know the child's name ?. Also, I have read where Daniel McCarty Jr. married an "Elizabeth Smith" after Penelope's death. If Penelope was 19 and had one child, I'm wondering if she died as results of child birth ??? Also, this Penelope has an Aunt "Penelope" Higgins, who is said to have married John Manley it looks like. Daniel's tombstone in "West'd Co., near Montross" now erased by time read:"Here lyeth the body of Daniel McCarty, who departed this life the forth of May, 1724, in the forty-fifth year of his age. He was endowed with many virtues and good qualifications, but the actions proceeding from them bespeak their praise. Here also lyeth the body of Thaddeus McCarty, youngest son to Daniel McCarty, Esq. He died the 7th of February, 1731, in the 19th year of his Age. Near this place Like Wise is the Body of Penelope, Wife to Daniel McCarty, Second son of Daniel McCarty, Esq., and daughter to Christine Higgins, Gent., who departed this life the 26th of March,1732, in the 19th year of her age, *with one Child."* In 1907 as his tomb was being righted, an unknown and unsuspected slab was found beneath his tomb. This slab is hopelessly defaced in places, but it still gives very valuable information. It marks the burial place of Elizabeth, first wife of William Payne and second of Daniel McCarty." First, Flynt's Mill. (For some reason I had not saved McCarty's will and finally found it.) That mill is actually in Northumberland County at the county line, but on the NCO side. If you have access to a map of the area, you will find it on Va. Rt. 617, Gardy's Mill Road, which runs southeast from Rt. 203 near Kinsale. In colonial times this was known as the Main Road or the Road to Flynt's Mill. The mill is on Hampton Hall Creek, known first as Yeocomico River, then Flynt's Mill Creek. Gardy was a later operator of the mill. The mill is still there but abandoned. I am sure the building is not the original. Flynt was Clerk in Northumberland at one time. I searched out McCarty's for a bit but did not find mention of the mill, but I certainly did not go through all of their deeds. Cherry Point is not far away. It is the large neck of land between the South Yeocomico and Coan rivers in Northumberland and fronts on the Potomac. Most of my work has been in Westmoreland. I would not be surprised if Flynt had another mill on Cherry Point. McCarty is buried at Yeocomico Church, Tucker Hill, Va. a few miles from Kinsale and not at all close to Montross. The stone has been restored/re-written. I am sure Dr, McCarty's book must have gone into that and would have the transcription.
