I'm not a McCarty researcher, so my thoughts might be totally off base here, Also, some rambling here. I always like to try to ID where folks were living, or owned land. So, when I saw this note I decided to go to the Historic Westmoreland patent sheets by Eaton to see exactly where the McCarty family was showing up in Westmoreland (note: not all the old patents given but gives you a pretty good idea of people/location some times). Also, I am interested in the Thomas & Cox family appearing in document with a Daniel McCarty & Barbara. Reason is a William Rush (I) married Dorothy, relic of Christopher Thomas and the Grey/Rush family later owned land near the Westmoreland/Stafford/KG line and I'm wondering if this William Thomas and Robert Thomas (in the Daniel & Barbara McCarty document) are out of same line. I think William Thomas line included James & James (the young) Thomas who were surveyors, but need to check further.....Think maybe the "William James Thomas", surveyor showing up in Fauquier, was same man as James Thomas the younger. Been trying to track this Thomas family of late, but not a lot of success. My best guess: This Christopher Thomas appears to have been coming from York Co Va and may have migrated to Maryland and then crossed over to NN and may have had a son William. Anyone with info on this family, I would like to here from you. Here's what I found from the entries on Westmoreland patent sheets Patent sheet #5 Wm Lord to Daniel McCarty 496 acres Oct 1, 1728 (near Morris Store and Aug Washington’s Mill & Popes Creek) Patent sheet #7 William Bridges to D. McCarty 200a Dec 16 1690 near Br of Popes Creek Patent sheet #13 1050a Wm Gooch Patent Nov 18, 1650, assigned to Richard Cole he re-patented for 1350 acres August 20, 1661 escheated to Daniel McCarty & Daniel Tebbs, March 11, 1703. This land is not to far from Henry Corbin, Capt Peter Ashton and “William Thomas” patent of Sept 30, 1660 and fairly close to the Vincent Cox family (patent sheet # 14) First two patent sheets (5&7)show land in the immediate area of Popes Creek (and very close to each other), but I notices that one of the tracks was acquired by a Daniel McCarty after the 1724 death of Daniel McCarty, Speaker of the House of Burgesses ....So, is he a son ? as he is certainly in the the immediate area of Popes Creek ? ....Did he marry a Barbara (or vice versa) ? This last patent sheet (13) shows a Daniel McCarty and a Daniel Tebbs owning land near a "William Thomas" and I see a Robert Thomas as a witness and Sem Cox as a friend on the McCarty deed to Symon Tomasin. I think this Sem Cox can be connected to the Vincent Cox family located nearby....So is he same man purchasing land from William Lord on Popes Creek in 1728? This looks like the "Symon Thomasin" mentioned in the Daniel &Barbara McCarty deed...He may have come from Lancaster to KG ..... 1753-1773 King George Co., Va - Deed Book; pp. 712-714. Somewhere I stumbled on Sem Cox. I seem to recall he was a ship captain. I too work on the land side. I just finished a squib on Eaton. He had an impossible job. I know because I am trying to do the same thing but in a smaller area. However when you omit 50% of the patents in one area, it is not good. My final comment was: "Placement is one thing. Glaring omissions are inexcusable. It is regretful that this work has been regarded as scripture in the county for decades." Unfortunately his is the only work. I have hit the Thomas family on a few deeds and will check to see what I have.
