In Westmoreland County Deed Book 7, p. 21 is found the inquisition into the death of poor John Sorrell, returned by coroner Benjamin Berryman and the jury. On 29 March 1721, they found that: "the body of John Sorell lying dead in the road being first sworn & charged to say the truth according to the best of their knowledge and evidence appearing but what we find by circumstance we do find that the sd John Sorrell was riding along the road & the saddle or furniture going way and back did let & cause the sd John Sorell to fall from the horse so as by the sd fall he instantly died and being charged to enquire if the horse whereof he fell was the cause of his death we do find that the horse was not in the fault…” At least the horse survived and was not found guilty of murder.
