David, First, Rozier and Rosser are not to be confused, at least in this case. Davis ROSSER was indentured in Bristol, England and sent to Virginia for 4 years servitude in 1676. He died in 1698 leaving four daughters and a widow Margaret (his 2nd wife, but not the mother of his four children). Margaret married as her 2nd husband Francis James, who had been married to Mary Sherwood. It's a tight family. As you know, another of Philip Sherwoods daughters was Martha Sherwood who maried Thomas Marshall, her first husband. Elizabeth Rosser would have been Thomas Marshall's niece--daughter of David Rosser and Sarah Sherwood. I don't know where Mike Marshall came up with the conclusion that Elizabeth Rosser married Bridges Rozier/Rosser. Rozier is a legitimate surname but it is not ROSSER, which is English. Rozier was French Huguenot. I do not know who Elizabeth Rosser married. I only know she and her Rosser siblings were all minor in 1698 when guardianship of them (Elizabeth, Sarah, David and Mary Rosser) was given to Francis James and his wife Mary (Sherwood). I think Mike Marshall believes this Elizabeth was actually a daughter of Thomas Marshall & Martha Sherwood who married Bridges Rozier/Rosser. She had a second marriage to Francis Redman. If this is correct, do you know the relationship of Bridges Rozier/Rosser to David Rosser?
Craig, Thanks for the e-mails and clarification on Phillip Sherwood's daughter Sarah. As for Rozier/Rosser, let's just disregard Rozier and go with Rosser. I pulled this record from Mike's Rootsweb site: BEGIN WESTMORELAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA ORDER BOOK, 1707-1709 {Antient Press}: pg 2 Westmoreland County Court 26th of October 1709 - CHANCELLOR &c v REDMAN &c. Upon the Petition of THOMAS CHANCELLOR and KATHERINE his Wife, it is ordered that FRANCIS REDMAN (who intermarred with ELIZABETH Relict and Executrix of BRIDGES ROSSER, late deced.), be summoned to the next Court to be held for this county to answer the same END This Francis Redman is apparently a "kinsman" of the Lovells. John "of the Forest" Marshall (another son of Thomas who died 1704) had a daughter who married into the Lovell family. It would be great to figure out who this Elizabeth really is. I feel like Mike may be correct that this Elizabeth who married Bridges Rosser and Francis Redman may have been another daughter of Thomas Marshall. But, then again, perhaps she really is the Elizabeth Rosser, daughter of David Rosser & Sarah Sherwood. Thanks. If it's of any help...John Rozier b c 1604 in London and d 1660 in Westmoreland County...his descendants in the NN eventually used the spelling Rose. It's unlikely that Rozier and Rosser are the same family...and it's an unlikely transcription errors due to the "z". >________________________________ > From: DAVID BROWN <dbrown544@prodigy.net> >To: Craig Kilby <persisto1@gmail.com>; Northern Neck Northern Neck List <VA-NORTHERN-NECK@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 12:54 PM >Subject: Re: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] SHERWOOD/MARSHALL/JAMES/ROSSER > >Craig, > >Thanks for the e-mails and clarification on Phillip Sherwood's daughter Sarah. > >As for Rozier/Rosser, let's just disregard Rozier and go with Rosser.
