I am on several Va and a couple of MD mailing lists at Rootsweb. There have been several postings from Mike Marshall with only links and the links are different. Has he been hacked and been hit with spam. ?? I wouldn't advise anyone to click on those links as spam might hit you. There is no messages in the postings but links that are suspicious. Marianne
This happens on EVERY list. It spreads because people click on it and you know they have because they respond very nasty to the list that "this kind of thing is unacceptable on a genealogy list" Woops..... Another one just bit the dust. LOL Hmmm I'll have to remember that line for next person I see who makes that comment, that we'll now be seeing them as supposedly posting those links. Why are people so compelled to click anything they see? Hmmm Everyone needs to remember if you are unsure of a link......... Copy/paste it in your search/browser bar and look it up that way. There will be your answer. My Mayflower list just got one sent by someone and a reader said...... "Looks like some addresses have been compromised!! Either that, or we're selling Viagra as a sideline." So I advised him that he too may be hacked now that he knows it was a viagra add. I wrote privately to the lady to tell her she has been hacked...... She said she knew....... And could I advise the Mayflower list.... As she has been locked out for 24 hrs. Let's pass the word along for everyone to stop clicking on these links. Janean, This is almost funny, unless yours it the address that has been hacked. Camille Wells advises me that I cannot repeat this often enough, so I'll say it again: Do NOT open links even to rootsweb if (1) there is no subject heading and/or (2) no message OTHER THAN a link. Just trash it. If there is not subject and no message other than a link, you can be sure it is (a) not worth reading anyway and (b) a con or spam. EVEN IT COMES FROM SOME ADDRESS YOUR RECOGNIZE. DO alert the "sender" (but not by "reply", but your own message) and, if a list like this, me.
