    3. Speaking of the Seldens today, there was a fascinating article in the last issue of the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Magazine by Robert V. Montague III titled Peter Montague Memorial Gravesite?" While a large memorial stone to Peter Montague was erected on this site near Lancaster County Court House in the early part of the last century, there is probably not a single Montague buried there. Peter Montague certainly is not buried there. He lived and died in Middlesex County! So how did this all get started? A fragment of an old stone was found. It is the stone of Hannah Ball Montague, widow of William Montague. Her father Richard-3 Ball had left this land his daughter Sarah SELDEN after his wife's decease. And it stayed in the Selden family after this for quite some time. William Montague died in Essex County and nobody knows where is buried, but probably not here. The Montagues at the early part of the last century were a prominent political family on the rise. One of them was a judge in Lancaster County, and it was he who came up with the notion to honor his ancestor on this site. You may often read in many genealogies that the mother of Mary Ball Washington was Mary Montague, daughter of emigrant Peter Montaugue. This would indeed be a miracle, as that daughter died some 16 years before Joseph Ball took his 2nd wife, the widow Mary Johnson! Craig
