    1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] BERRY FAMILY

    3. I want to start a thread on the BERRY family of Westmoreland County. This may go no where, but it will surely open some doors. I'll start with my brick wall and perhaps this will lead to where I think it may go. My theory (which may be totally incorrect) is that the John Berry below belongs in the Westmoreland county family of that name. I am praying that somebody on this list has done more work on this than I have. It all starts with one JOHN BERRY, born ca 1705. Where, I don't know. I am suspecting in Westmoreland County. He did have the curtesy to write a will recorded in 1779 in Culpeper County. We know his wife was named Jemima. That is where we are all STUCK. I know who his children were, and from thence forward is not an issue. It's going backwards that has caused headaches. This may be a completely different BERRY family than the one in the Northern Neck. For what it's worth, his will names: (A) Wife Jemima. Maiden name not known His will names 11 children (the Germanna family connections are numerous). I won't lay all that out here, because I am not sure there will be interest in stuff from Culpeper County. But, it is a possibility I'd like to explore. What I hope happens here is a discussion of the Berry family in Westmoreland County. I have a number of lines from that county that are not usually discussed on this list. HUDSON, RUSH, POPHAM, STONEHOUSE, TURBERVILLE, ENGLAND to name a few. They are usually Quakers. Craig

    3. Hi Craig, Fwiw, Thomas Berry, who died in Northumberland Co., VA in 1742/1743 (Will written 22 February 1742/43, Codicil 12 March 1742/43, and Will proven 11 April 1743), did have a son named John in addition to children George, William, Alice Lattimore, Patience Ingram, Elizabeth Forrester, Sarah, and Thomas Berry, Jr.   My line is through daughter Patience Ingram and I don't have anything on son John.       I don't know if you've seen the following posting or not (which may be helpful with Jemima): http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/vaamhers/2000-09/0968720969 Thanks. David

    3. David: This just goes to show that you never know where records are going to be found. John Berry & wife Jemima in Craven County, NC in 1765. Who'd a thunk it? While John Berry is rather common, having a wife Jemima is beyond coincidence. Thank you for finding this. It is the first real break-through anyone has made on this family that ends up in Culpeper County VA. 2. I have been doing research on the Berry family, and this John seems to lead to SC and on the Mississippi with connections to the Butler family, which are of the H group in DNA project at Butler History site on the internet. I also have been trying to tie them to the Berry family that married into the Doughty family with connections to MA and Maine. I would love to see more information on these families.
