    3. OK gang slow down here a minute and let me catch up. LOL Who was Richard-1 married to... aka the mother of James, John and Richard Selden (who m. Elizabeth Chinn..... etc) I did not have Elizabeth as a child of John and Sarah Yates. I just recently acquired a second brother. I had one Selden and that was John who m. Sarah Ball and had no parents for him so I'm trying to get these dots connected. She was the daughter of Maj. James Ball of Bewdley and his 2nd wife Mary Conway. This brings up two omissions in both Peggy Hill's book and Ida J. Lee's abstract of the will of James Ball. It is true that James Ball's 1754 will names on one Selden grandson: John to whom land in [then] Prince William County, and that is the only Peggy Hill lists for this couple. However, the 1771 will of Richard Selden names three sons: James, John and Richard (who m. Elizabeth CHINN, d/o John Chinn & Sarah Yates.). To sons John and Richard, he leaves 1,000 of land in Fauquier County (formed 1759 from Pr. William) "left to him by his grandfather Major James Ball." by "him" he means his son John Selden. Richard is probably entitled to a share since other language in this will refers to a marriage contract between himself and Col James Ball "in behalf of our children. and this implies that James Selden was a son by previous marriage. This contract is also referred to in the will of of Sarah Ball you cite below. I am assuming the 1742 will of Sarah Ball is for Sarah (Young) Ball, widow of Richard-3 Ball. 3. Janean, you should know by know what a tangled mess of yarn these NN families are. Yes, it is complicated and confusing. There just were not that many marriage partners for the upper crust in those days. Canonical law be .....well, I'll just say it was widely ignored when it was inconvenient. The Seldons were a brief but much needed puff of fresh blood into this increasingly stagnating gene pool. Let's see if we can simplify it just a bit with regards to your line of interest: On Sep 18, 2011, at 10:54 PM, Janean Ray wrote: > OK gang slow down here a minute and let me catch up. LOL Who was Richard-1 > married to... aka the mother of James, John and Richard Selden (who m. > Elizabeth Chinn..... etc) It actually starts, as far as I can back so far, with John-1 of Elizabeth City County. He married Sarah-4 Ball (Richard-3, William-2, William-1). Bond in Lancaster County dated 14 OCT 1726. THEIR SON RICHARD-2 SELDON married Mary Conway, daughter of Edwin Conway III and Mary BALL (James-3, William-2, William-1) Bond in Lancaster County dated 21 OCT 1741 and a marriage contract (which I have not seen and do not know yet if it was recorded.) THEIR SON RICHARD-3 SELDON married Elizabeth CHINN, daughter of John Chinn and Sarah Yates. They were married in Lancaster County on 14 JUN 1803 (bond.) This was her 2nd husband. Her first husband was William O. Nutt, whom, as Elizabeth CHINN, she married in Lancaster on 6 NOV 1796. She died (as Elizabeth SELDON) in Lancaster in 1848, testate. By her husband Richard-3 Seldon, she had one son, Richard Y. Seldon, a doctor who died before his mother, unmarried and with no children in 1835. From this point you are well advised to check out the Lancaster Estates Database which is on line from mbwm.org under "Lancasters Estates." from the home page. And believe me, this took me a long while to sort out when we did that database. > > I did not have Elizabeth as a child of John and Sarah Yates. I just > recently acquired a second brother. Nutt, she had a one daughter named Elizabeth Chinn NUTT who became the wife of Joseph Addison Carter, Jr. I'm going to leave it at there for now. Please check out the MBW database for more fun. I will only add one more thing: I am showing NINE children for John Chinn and Sarah Yates. This is John-4 CHINN (Joseph-3, Rawleigh-2, John-1). Wait until you get into the Dowmans with this bunch.
