    3. Carolyn Jett is a highly respected writer and genealogist. I quote her because her work is authoritative. The concept of "fair use" allows quotation of several paragraphs (I quoted most of 3) or even several pages from a long work for academic purposes, such as research. The quotation must be set off by quotation marks or indentation, and attribution to the author must be given. As a professional editor, writer, and publisher for 40 years, I am aware of copyright regulations and observe them scrupulously. Kathleen Much The Book Doctor

    3. Kathleen Agreed. Knowing Carolyn as I do, her constant theme is copyright. When pressed on just what she interprets "fair use" to be, she explains it (more or less) as thus: "Think subjectively. How would like to see your work stolen and quoted in toto with no attribution? Further, how would like your entire book to be copied and no payment made to the author?" I am not saying you did this. You did not. This is merely part of a broader theme here. Kathleen, whenever I cite something from, say, the McCarty book, I try very hard to cite the authors and the page number in an astercik to that note (when working with emails, I find it easier on the reader to do it this way, and not embedded in entire footnote citations into the text. This annoys and distracts fthe reader from the point one is trying to make) .I do no not quote umpteen paragraphs and pass it off as my own research. Why? Because the reason I am quoting it at all is to illustrate a point, other peoples' research, their own conclusions (which may or may not not be mine) and to add additional research and a different view, at which point I try to make that clear as well. To simply regurgitate what someone has already written may have its uses to make a point. Keep in mind, however, many of us already have this information. We are striving to come up with new interpretations and solve conflicting sets of information.
