Thanks to Mike for perseverance in tracking down John Carter's (ca 1613-1669) five wives. This record contradicts Clifford Dowdey's statement that Elizabeth Sherley was a "widow of Gloucester County," as she is described here as a "spinster." Maybe we can quit hunting for an elusive Sherley husband and start looking for a father. I don't have any Gloucester Co record books handy--does someone else on this list?
