    3. Janean I've worked hard to develop explanations for all this stuff that don't require any biology. If I get too deep in the jargon please call me on it, and I'll try a kinder/gentler explanation. We don't need any degree to apply the DNA tools. Some elbow grease and midnight oil perhaps, but no biology. Jim - Sent from my iPhone - FaceTime! 3. Jim Thank you very much for that effort. I also appreciate that we are working in genealogy time-4-6 gens--and thousands of years ago. 3. Thanks Jim I'll trying to get a grip on it. I think I've learned so far that Y is male and mt is female? LOL I'm Adult A.D.D. so these rapid fire emails of everyone spewing DNA jargon is a little overwhelming. I've never looked into it because I have too many females that carried down from my Rawleigh Chinn line and can't begin to count the women I descend from in all the other lines. Interestingly, I have one brother but he would have to test for the last name of Crosnoe through my father's father, because my father's "mother" (Skiles) didn't marry him and retained her maiden name. And Crosnoe I think came from Germany. The only closest thing I could get to Y-DNA in the NN area would be my brother through my mother who then goes from her father BACK BACK BACK with male Meadows. There is only one female break there. But I don't know how all this works anyway. Besides these tests from what I've heard are quite expensive. 3. Janean You've got the Y and mt right. But they go in unbroken male (Y) or female (mt) lines of ancestry, no exceptions. Both men and woman get equal treatment with the Family Finder test. The home page www.familytreedna.com shows prices. It's not cheap, but what you get is valuable accurate info, and additional results are added monthly, for free, for life. 3. So even with the female lines, those can't be broken either? 3. Janean. Right. Unbroken all-male (father to son) and all-female (mother to daughter). No exceptions, though men do have their mother's mtDNA as well. Obviously, women have no Y chromsome, or else they'd be men. The autosomal DNA (atDNA) is a much, much, much larger pool of ALL your DNA and what Jim is doing is finding matching SEGMENTS to others from an UNKNOWN common ancestor.
