    3. Jim, my notes on this couple (William Strother m. Margaret Thornton, daughter of Francis Thornton) say: William Strother married his first cousin, Margaret Thornton. Their mothers, Dorothy Savage Strother and Alice Savage Thornton, being sisters and daughters of Captain Anthony Savage and his wife, Alice Stafford. My source for this information is NOT primary.....it is an internet source...so not absolutely reliable.....interesting nonetheless. I keep notes on the Strother family because this couple's gr-granddaughter, Susannah Strother married Moses Hawkins. Moses Hawkins was killed at the battle of Germantown in the Revolutionary War. Descendents of Moses Hawkins are DNA matches for my father. marsha moses On Jan 19, 2013, at 8:44 PM, "Jim Burgess" <jimburgess@virginiasurnames.com> wrote: > King George County, Virginia Will Book A-1 1721-1752 William Strother Will 7 > Apr 1726 <javascript:;> > > King George County, Virginia Will Book A-1 1721-1752 William Strother Will 7 > Apr 1726More > > Notes > > King George County, Virginia Will Book A-1 1721-1752 William Strother Will 7 > Apr 1726 page 40-41 In the Name of God Amen. 2. Craig Kilby
    3. Hello all: I just found an error on our tree, and inasmuch as it is my fault it is there from our original database, I have corrected it and need to let you know. Matthew Rodham had four known daughters by his wife Elizabeth. The original tree has her family name as HEWLITT and this may be true. I have not changed that. However, I had the two of the daughters--Hannah and Elizabeth--married to other one's husband. Hannah Rodham married Christopher Neale, and Elizabeth Rodham married Richard Kenner, not the other way around. Craig Kilby

    3. Thanks - I was looking for confirmation of Sarah Tuckers age at her marriage or evidence otherwise. Thanks for confirming what I found and for the additional information that you provided. After a couple of marriages, this Fitzhugh line, via Thomas Fitzhugh (son of Col William Fitzhugh and Sarah Tucker) and Anne Fowke Mason works its way through Smith and Hancock into my King line. I do not want to get into working the Fitzhughs at the moment. There is still much to be done within the early King line. 3. While filing some material resulting from a move recently, I ran across some data pertaining to 3 generations of Fitzhughs - Henry (1614 - 1664), Colonel William (1651 - 1701), Captain Henry (1687 - 1758). According to this source, Colonel William married Sarah Tucker (1663 - ) in 1674. Now, this would have meant that she would have been 11 yrs old. Is anybody familiar with this Fitzhugh line? I found these data in The Virginia Magazine, Vol 75, 1967, p. 168 'Catalogue of Signed Fitzhugh Portraits'. A footnote indicates that much of the biographical information offered in this catalogue was obtained from the files of the late J. Hall Pleasants, which are in the Maryland Historical Society. Further assistance came from George H.S. King (no relative of mine) and his publications. Additional note of interest: Henry (1614-1664) married Mary King - again, as far as I know, not related to an ancestor of mine. Donald King

Begin forwarded message: > > Among the ink-and-paper hoaxes, late in the nineteenth century the editors of the six volumes of Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography paid contributors for their entries. One or more needy writers submitted biographies of people who were supposed to have done scientific research in South America, some with bibliographies of their publications. The editors had never heard of those scientists and evidently were pleased to be able to include records of their lives and achievements in the biographical reference work. It wasn't until much later when a scientist used some of those entries as a starting place for his own research that he discovered that the entries were all fakes, that no such scientists had ever existed, and that there was no record of the published scholarship cited in the entries in Appleton's. > > See Margaret Castle Schindler, "Fictitious Biography," American Historical Review 42 (1937): 680-690. > > Some of that stuff is probably floating around on the Internet, right now, and if it is obvious that it came from Appleton's, people will probably still believe it. > > Brent Tarter > The Library of Virginia

    3. Kathleen, Excellent! This is like unsorting the William Fox but in reverse. Same principles apply, however. I will take a closer look at this. I had seen the Fox Family article, which I referenced in my post you quote below. But you've added some new tipping points to it. THANK YOU! (Like we needed another Payne family....) Another lesson here--and one of the reasons I included Middlesex & Essex Counties in the definition of the "Northern Neck" for purposes of THIS list, is that one really has to look in all the surrounding counties. I remember taking some serious flack from a gentleman in Westmoreland County for doing this at the time (September 2009,) when the list was created. Again, Kathleen, excellent material. I look forward to delving into this further when time permits. 1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Heales & the will of William-3 Fox, 1717
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. Kathleen, Thanks. I should have been more specific as to which of the daughters of Capt. George Heale & wife Catherine Chinn that William Fox named in his 1717 will. All of them were unmarried, and were: Elizabeth, Ellen, Sarah He did not name any of these other children and probably only meant them when he named "all of the daughters of Capt. George Heale" as residual legatees to his nephew David Fox. As for Fox, I think I've got them sorted out, though with respect to Samuel Fox (David-2, David-1) I am not certain that his wife was Ann DAINGERFIELD. That conclusions rests on her will naming her "brother" William Daingerfield, though could also mean "brother-in-law." In his 1918 article on the Fox Family, Lyon G. Tyler thought she "may" be a PAYNE. Though his evidence for that was not given. To the known children of Samuel & Ann Fox can be added a daughter "Letty" named in the will of David-2 Fox as his granddaughter, daughter of his son Samuel. (This got left out for some reason in Ida J. Lee's abstracts of Lancaster County wills.) Likewise, the now-found will of Hannah Ball Fox also names a granddaughter "Lotty" Fox. So, of the three known children of Samuel & Ann Fox, only survived to adulthood, and she was Frances Fox who married (1) Charles Burgess and (2) Jesse Ball. 1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] New book: Northumberland County Cemetery Stones
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. This book just came out a few months ago. It's titled: *The Shepherd's Fold: Cemetery Records of Northumberland County, Virginia Churches* and is published by New Papyrus Press. It was compiled by the Northern Neck of Virginia Genealogical Society, and spear-headed by Robert McKinney of Irvington. It contains entries for over 10,000 people buried in church cemeteries in Northumberland County. Most of the dates will be from ca 1820 forward. Copies can be purchased from the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library by calling 804-462-7280, or on-line from the publisher, John Vogt from his web site. A library copy is at the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library in Lancaster, VA if you happen to be local or visiting, call # H-155. This is the 2nd book within a year to be published on Northumberland County gravestones. The first, by Prosser Crowther, was titled *Rocks of Ages* and compiles stones found in family graveyards. Crowther's book is only available for purchase through him, and regrettably I do not have his contact information. It is, however, available at the MBW library (not for sale at the museum gift shop). You may call the museum phone number above to learn the contact information for the Crowther book, or send an e-mail to Karen Hart, Executive Director, karen@mbwm.org Craig Kilby
