The original is at the Library of Virginia in their bound volume of unrecorded wills and deeds, page 128 of the Library of Virginia volume of loose wills and deeds. He names in his will the following people: 1. Wife Margaret, sole executrix 2. Son Nathaniel Hedgman 3. Son Peter Hedgman 4. Daughter Elizabeth Thompson Signed by mark. Proved 1699. 3. Somebody asked in response to this message about the Doris Davison Collection: "Is there any easy way to get a list of primary research surnames? As I apparently did not make it clear when I wrote THESE HAVE NOT YET BEEN CATALOGED". These WILL BE catalogued. They are not YET cataloged. It is three boxes. We are NOT scanning these files at this time. We are happy to see if there even IS a file on a given surname. Send an email to info@mbwm.org and one of the volunteers will get back with you as soon as possible. There ARE three typed lists of the contents of each box. I do not not think we are at the stage yet to publish this list. Bear with us. You may of course send a query to our library at info@mbwm.org. Certain fees may apply. 2. Craig Kilby
    3. Wow. I was are there was "slight" boundary change between Westmoreland and Northumberland Counties in 1664, but I had no idea to its extent. Going through the back-issues of *The Bulletin of the Northumberland County Historical Society" I find an article in the 1979 magazine titled "Early English Settlers On Machodac Creek in Westmoreland County" written by Rev. George William Belae (1842-1921) "seventy five years ago" (i.e., 1904). In a footnote by the editor, it is noted "Dr. Beale failed to point out that these 'early settlers' were originally Northumbrians. Even after the formation of Westmorelan County in 1653, the boundary of Northumberland stretched to Machodoc Creek. It is thought that this was arranged through the influence of Col. Richard Lee so that his 'Machotic' lands remained in Northumberland. After his death in 1664, the boundary was lowered from Machodoc to Hamton Hall Creek, a branch of the Yeocomico River." There is not authorship to this "Editorial Note." The editor of this magazine is not given, but it was almost certainly J. Motley Booker or his close friend, Dr. James F. Lewis who were the stalwarts of the NNCHS at the time, and frequent contributors to the magazine's content. Interesting, to say the least. Craig Kilby

His influence on James Madison and subsequently on the Bill of Rights is mostly unknown. I became aware of his fascinating story only a year ago. I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, but we certainly should be aware of the struggles of our early patriots to ensure religious freedom.

We have speculated that Mary (wife of George Proctor) may have had maiden name of Francis; however, a more recent theory is that Mary MNU, wife of George Proctor, may have been the daughter of Edward Price & wife Anne whose maiden name was supposedly Bourne. Anne (Bourne) Price married secondly to Walter Francis who deeded land to George Proctor. In 1696, one of the witnesses named to the will of Edward Price was Andrew Bourne, whose wife was Christian Taliaferro (after the death of Andrew Bourne, Christian married secondly to Henry Johnson, whose daughter Elizabeth, I believe, married John Bourne, whose daughter Christian Bourne married William Tapp and had land record witnessed by Elias Sharp, son-in-law of George Proctor and Mary MNU). 3. Yes I do Jim. It is not to far from where I live. Its on Fall Hill Ave. Straight across Rt 3 and down the hill. There's a long driveway to the property so you can`t see it. If you google Fall Hill Plantation you can get a picture of the it .Also, the Francis Thornton grave stone I sent you I had thought might be the Francis Thornton of Fall Hill. I have to go back to the cemetery and see what it says. I was thinking this was our family. I will try and get down there to get pictures if possible. 1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Statute of Religious Freedom and Northumberland County
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. Going through back-issues of The Bulletin of the Northumberland County Historical Society and cataloging them article-by-article gives me pause to find some real gems here and there. One of them is in Vol. 14 (1977), titled "Northumberland and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom." Now I know it is all the rage for some these days for some to say the U.S. was and is and Christian nation. Many of us who study history, especially Virginia history, would respectfully disagree. Of all the things Thomas Jefferson was most proud of, he only wanted three of them put on his tombstone: Author of the Declaration of American Independence, Author of The Statute for Religious Freedom and Father of the University of Virginia. On 28 November [year blank, but no doubt 1785] 112 men from Northumberland County sent a petition to the General Assembly protesting a recent act taxing the citizens to pay for "Christian" teachers. A good many of the signers were well-known Baptists. (Not a surprise to those well versed in Baptist history and beliefs.) Their protests was not so much anti-Christian as it was anti-establishment of any state religion. The "Whereas" preamble recites that the General Assembly had recently passed a statute "obliging the inhabitants of this state to pay the Teachers of the Christian Religion" and goes on in the "therefore" clause to explain their objections, saying they believe it "to be contrary to the Spirit of the Gospel and the bill of Rights; and that Legislatures should not assume the power of Establishing modes of Religion....." and "Certain it is that the Holy author of our Religion not only supported and maintained his Gospel in the world for several hundred years without the aid of Civil Power, but against all the Powers on the Earth...." and it goes on with wonderful words of protest from there. I am reminded of the old adage: People want their legislators to be Christians, but they don't want Christians to be their legislators." What a wonderful reminder from the past on just what the Separation of Church and State truly meant to our forefathers. I wish more people today would pay heed to it. It is the basis for the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, i.e., the Bill of Rights. 1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] More on Matthew Rodham
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. In my last post, I corrected our NN ancestry.com to reflect that it was Elizabeth Rodham who married Richard Kenner and Hannah Rodham who married Christopher Neale. I mentioned, but did not name, two other of his four known daughters. They were named in the will of their mother as Susannah and Mary. Of Mary nothing further is known. Susannah married Robert Mason, who was executor to her will. I have inputted the children as given in the lengthy article by C. D. Cochran and published in the 1975 (Vol. 12) issue of The Bulletin of the Northumberland County Historical Society. The question has come about a fictional daughter "Sarah Rodham" who married a Claudius "Cloud" TRUSSELL. There is probably some link to this family, but the evidence is lacking that Matthew Rodham had any daughter named Sarah. If there is a Trussell family link, it would most likely be through a sister of Matthew Rodham, and go back to his days at Kent Island. Just throwing this out. I'm also interested to learn how we know that the wife of Matthew Rodham was Elizabeth HEWLITT. Craig Kilby
