All, The long awaited latest book by Stuart L. Butler is now out. *Defending the Old Dominion: Virginia and Its Militia in the War of 1812* (Lanham, MD: University Press of America, Inc., 2013; ISBN 987-0-7618-6040-2) It is the latest acquisition of the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library. An autographed hardcover book and gift of the author to the Library. This will go down as THE definitive study of the War of 1812 in Virginia. The hardcover version is 622 pages including an every-name index, and a bibliography for the voluminous notes. There are 29 pages of illustrations (but this reader wishes there more!). This is not a list of militia registers, but is a book about the conflicts in Virginia during that war, which took place in Virginia in 1813-1814. I was surprised to see that the publisher was not Heritage Press, as had originally been planned, the last time I talked to the author. However, I am not surprised. Another book, Burials of War of 1812 Veterans in Virginia, of which yours truly was the Assistant Editor, is still not out from that same publishing house, because they cannot seem to figure out to print in a black ink. Oh, its offered for sale on their web site, but I would caution anyone NOT to buy it. That version is not only all in gray scale, but in reduced font that would require a powerful microscope to read. (This issue is still up in the air, but it is a fair statement that when it does get published, it won't be by Heritage Press.)* Back to this book. Stuart Butler is a keen historian whose passion has been the War of 1812. He is a retired archivist of the Library of Congress. He currently lives in Williamsburg. The depth of sources he has tapped for this book spans both sides of the Atlantic, newspapers, and a wealth of other information. If your ancestor(s) were in the War of 1812 in Virginia, you will read about what happened in these pages. And don't forget: The end of this war is what really opened the flood gates for out-migration from Virginia to the new frontiers, especially Missouri and Arkansas where bounty land was available. If you are looking to fill in some history on your ancestor from this time period, you'll want to use this book as a reference. (You'll also want to use Butler's other book, Guide to Virginia Militias in the War of 1812.) Happy Hunting, all! Craig Kilby *In the meantime, I will entertain look-ups in this book if you suspect your ancestor was in the War of 1812 and buried in Virginia

Tom, Always good to hear from you and other list members. Of course this is not against the "rules." Really, there are no "rules" other than good common sense. I don't know exactly what this new-found treasure trove contains, but it is surely some good new stuff. I posted this on the VA HISTORY list (moderated list) and it was not put through. Oh well. That must mean something good is in the offing at LVA which they wish to release on their own terms in their own good time. Tom, I don't know anything about the SHORT family. Perhaps you or another "lurker" here could start a thread on that topic. This list is for all researchers on NN families. If nobody starts a topic, nobody is going to talk about it. Eh? The Knott or Nott or, as you say, "not not" family is one that really deserves more discussion. Craig On Feb 8, 2013, at 8:37 PM, Tom M. Short II wrote: > Craig, > Thomas M. Short II here. Craig, Thomas M. Short II here. I am Tom M. Short II on Rootsweb. I am one of the dead weight lurkers of the Northern Neck. Descended from Thomas Short b.1642, died abt. 1685 Old Rappa, who was married to Ann (maybe Nott or Knott, or maybe not), thru their son Thomas Short of Essex m. 2nd Catherine Brown. Their son John Short married Winifred Randall. Other known families are in Stafford and King George. The reporting of any new finds is greatly appreciated by those of us who hover in the background. The possibilities are great, and could possibly reach further than Lancaster. I am anxious to explore. This is a thought completely unrelated to this subject and is loaded, and probably against the rules, and intended for one of the NNeck subscribers who will know who they are, but seems as a timely time to state the thought. I was and old email friend to my Boyd cousin Linda Lawhon who was a mentor, and email friend. Thank you Craig, for reporting this to us. Tom M. Short II
My goodness. This came out in todays on-line version of the Rappahannock Record (a local newspaper in Kilmarnock.) According the article, Circuit Court Clerk Diane Mumford discovered a box of VERY old papers during the move last year to the new Court House in Lancaster. She turned them over to the Library of Virginia last year, and according to this digitized color copies of at least some of these papers are now on display. I can't wait to see them! I am going through these bibles today, and updating what readily fits into our existing tree. Those of you are using the NN tree will see a very large list of new people. But, I had to laugh to myself when I came across this odd comment in the Kelley / Pinckard bible: "Nagged by a prissy woman." --No, I don't know who wrote that in there. Craig
I am inputting the records that I know connect to the existing tree. Tell me where James T. Ball fits in to the tree (or add him in) and I'll get to it. Tell me more about James T. Ball. Craig, Thank you for reply to questions about Peter Hedgman. He will be a key person in proving or disproving a theory I have about my 5xgf Alexander McConchie having married an Ann unproven Hudson, d/o Thomas Hudson. I'm waiting for a Virginia genealogist to take this on when she has an opening. I'm going with Peter Hedgman who had neighbor Joseph Chambers as being the son of Nathaniel Hedgman. Joseph Chambers who died 1733 CC MD had an estate record with Thomas Hudson and Verlinda Grinan. I believe the same Thomas Hudson was on earlier 1731 Stafford estate of Thomas Hooper that also had Peter Hedgman, Mott Donathan/Doniphan and Augustine Washington. I think Peter Hedgman was named on 1737 Stafford Co. Will of Hugh French who wanted Mrs. Augustine Washington to care her his daughter Margaret. His will states he bought land from Lewis Ellzey and had witnesses Thomas Dent and James Waugh. [Thomas Dent's nephew George Dent would sell land in 1796 Fauquier Co. to Alexander McConchie. Thomas Dent died 1751 Fairfax Co. Va and his will witnessed by Peter Hedgman.] I am assuming that below HUGH FRENCH JUNR. had the father HUGH FRENCH who died 1737. I also think that below William Cave would have widow Ann nee Travers who remarried THOMAS DENT in 1747. Thomas Dent died 1751 Fairfax Co. VA but had a last wife Elizabeth. Below MOTT DONIPHAN was first cousin to my 5xgm JAEL nee SHIPPEY whose granddaughter married grandson of Alexander McConchie and wife Ann unproven HUDSON. Alexander McConchie bought land from GEORGE DENT in 1796 Fauquier Co. GEORGE DENT was nephew of THOMAS DENT. GEORGE DENT's father WILLIAM DENT was called "brother" on Will of Thomas Dent. STAFFORD COUNTY VA WILL BOOK M; 1729-1748; THE ANTIENT PRESS pp 293-295 26th of May 1740 In Obedience to an order of Stafford County Court to us directed to appraise Estate of HUGH FRENCH JUNR. deced being first sworne before Mr. MOTT DONIPHAN one of his Majesties Justices of peace for the County we proceeded as followeth .. items listed and valued .. includes 1 old Sloop and Riggin .. This family from Rainsville, Northumberland County. Cost him $25 to outbid some old biddy who just wanted to have it only because she knew he wanted to have it. He won, and we have it now. Do think about these sorts of things as you go about your research. Gotta love it. Will be processing these as time goes along on our NN list at ancestry.com. i am actually very moved by the diligence with volunteer predecessors when to the lengths they did find all this stuff. It is quite literally all across the USA. Absolutely amazing. Craig Kilby
Amanda, As I wrote yesterday, the 1699 will of Nathaniel Hedgeman named a son Peter and a son Nathaniel, as well as wife Margaret and a daughter Elizabeth Thompson. It was witnessed by Peter Kilgore, Robert Schofield another name I cannot decipher. You'll notice these same people named in the Robert Bennett will you supply below. I can't speak as to Joseph Chambers. Don't know, Jim. Just reported his will. He seems to be the only Nathaniel Hedgman in Lancaster County in the right time frame, so chance are good he is. Have you checked the Robert "King" Carter papers that are on line? You might also want to contact the Foundation for Historic Christ Church. They have a very good collection of all things King Carter there. There is a will for a Nathaniel Hedgman, written 13 October 1699, in Lancaster County Virginia that was never recorded and was not abstracted in Ida J. Lee's book of Lancaster County Wills. He names in his will the following people: 1. Wife Margaret, sole executrix 2. Son Nathaniel Hedgman 3. Son Peter Hedgman 4. Daughter Elizabeth Thompson Signed by mark. Proved 1699. Witnesses Peter Killgore ?, Robert Schofield ? One other. These are nearly illegible. Hope this helps, Craig Kilby Others wrote: From: <col4rootdigr8@cox.net> Subject: Re: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Has anyone transcribed to will of NathanielHedgman in I think it is Lancaster County, Virginia thanks Jim Burgess Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2013 23:52:37 -0500 In-Reply-To: <000501cdf6b0$289fca10$79df5e30$@com> It looks like it may be in Prince William or Stafford.
