    1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Changing Subject Lines
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. Good morning, all The below is a good example of why it is important to change subject lines. I am not casting any aspersions, and I am as guilty as anyone about this, but read below thread: This started off about William Carter, d. 1662 and ends up talking about Dr. John Edwards. But the name of the thread (subject line) was not changed. How would one find the name of Edwards using the archives of this list? Answer: you wouldn't. Also, I am quickly learning that limiting the size of a post to 5kb may be a good idea. I have let pass through five posts this morning that exceed the limit. The main reason why these posts exceed that limit was due to repeating and including what had already been said in previous posts plus rootsweb trailers. The lesson here is to TRIM irrelevant material. This is especially true in the case for those using the DIGEST mode. It is really irritating for those on DIGEST to have to wade through the same material over an over. Those on LIST mode (one post at a time) don't see this aggravation because they are following (or deleting) the posts in more or less real time. Point being: MYSELF INCLUDED, trim down, trim down, trim down. Or, as Sgt. Joe Friday used to say, "Just the facts Ma'am, just the facts." Craig P.S. I am pretty sure this email will BOUNCE but I am going to let it go through as an example of how things get "messed up." As I said, I am guilty as anyone sometimes. The culprit here is not trimming and getting to "just the facts" AND changing subject lines. 1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] NBC Show Who Do You Think You Are & Upcoming Smithsonian Channel Program
    2. DAVID BROWN
    3. Hi Janean,   I love the program, "Who Do You Think You Are."   Unfortunately, it's on Friday night, and I often miss the episodes (and I'm terrible about setting my DVR to record -- LOL)!    I noticed the last episode was on Gwyneth Paltrow, and it looked fascinating (I missed the first half of the program).  I think there was one on Tim McGraw, which I missed too, but sounds like it may have discussed some Northern Neck roots for him.   Did anyone catch it?   Speaking of good genealogy/history programs, there's apparently one coming up on the Smithsonian Channel on the Scots-Irish.   Someone sent me a reminder of this program, which I'm pasting below.   Thanks.   David   Just FYI for all of you interested in the history of the Scots-Irish in Ireland and America you might want to watch a new miniseries called "Born Fighting".  On April 10 there is a two part special on the Smithsonian channel (on U-verse, channel 118).  The first part airs at 8pm followed directly by Part II at 9pm.  They show several time over the next week.  There maybe other ways to see this series--I don't know. If someone finds a way to see it other than on this channel, please let us know.  Here are the descriptions:   Part I A group of Scots broke with the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England and fought for their own unique interpretation of Protestantism which came to America with them and evolved into the fundamentalism that rules the Deep South.   Part II The Scots-Irish came to America from Northern Ireland and carried their strict moral values, their sense of honor, and their willingness to fight valiantly  under all circumstances to the New World, thus profoundly influencing the history of the U.S.

    1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Question Regarding Ursula BYSSHE
    2. DAVID BROWN
    3. Hi Charlene,   Ursula Bysshe is my 10x g-grandmother.    I think the best source of information for Ursula Bysshe is an excellent book by Alice Wright Algood.   According to Algood, all of Ursula's children were by her first husband Richard Thompson whom she married in 1641 in Maryland.   These children included Elizabeth Thompson who married Peter Presley and Sarah Thompson who married Thomas Willoughby.   Apparently, there was also a son named Richard who died young.   Ursula Bysshe was married three times -- first to Richard Thompson, then to John Mottram, and then finally to George Colclough (who, after Ursula's death, married Elizabeth Willoughby Oversee, the sister of Thomas Willoughby who married Ursula's daughter Sarah).   Algood says that John Mottram, Jr. was a son of John Mottram, Sr. by his first wife (in other words, he wasn't Ursula's son).   Apparently, after John Mottram, Jr.'s death, his widow (Ruth Griggs) married his nephew Mottram Wright.     Hope this helps.     David

    1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Henry Clay
    2. DAVID BROWN
    3. Thank you Janean for sharing this information regarding the portrait of Henry Clay.   Henry Clay was a first cousin of my gggg grandmother Mary Clay (1777-1860), daughter of Edward Clay & Magdalene Trabue.    Mary Clay married first to John Dameron and second to Wiliam Gold.  My line extends from John Dameron & Mary Clay through their daughter Patsy Dupuy Dameron who married her first cousin Alexander Morehead Dameron.   The Dameron family stems from Lawrence Dameron who settled in Northumberland Co., VA in the 1650's.    For anyone interested in  quick synopsis of Henry Clay, they may check this Wiki biography link:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Clay   Thanks.   David     --- On Sun, 4/3/11, Janean Ray <[email protected]> wrote: From: Janean Ray <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Fwd: Chinn Discovery To: [email protected] Date: Sunday, April 3, 2011, 11:04 AM July 15, 2009 FORT WORTH, TX.- When The Illustrious Guest (1847) appeared on the PBS program Antiques Roadshow earlier this year, appraiser Alan Fausel of the Bonhams auction house said the painting "could hang in a museum." Now it is on display. The 19th-century painting by James Henry Beard depicts legendary Kentucky statesman Henry Clay (1777-1852) as a guest at a country tavern while on the campaign trail. The work is on long-term loan to the Amon Carter Museum by a private collector.

    3. If this duplicates sorry, was having some issues posting it earlier. Found something interesting the other night watch Antique Roadshow. Famous painting which is NOW in a museum... "The Illustrious Guest" painted by James Henry Beard of HENRY CLAY. http://www.kpbs.org/news/2011/mar/25/antiques-roadshow-dallas-texas-hour-one / I knew watching this I recognized that name so immediately went to my database. Henry Clay was the law partner to Richard Henry Chinn of Kentucky and grandson to Charles and Scythia Chinn and great grandson to ... you guessed it.. Rawleigh and Margaret. Richard Henry Chinn's wife.. Elizabeth Moore Holmes was the daughter of Suckey Chinn.. and granddaughter to Charles and Scythia Chinn.... hence, great granddaughter to Rawleigh and Margaret. The oldest son of John & Mildred Higgins Chinn was the Honorable Richard Henry Chinn, an attorney. He was the law partner of that noted statesman, Henry Clay. It has been documented that Richard Henry Chinn was the only man with who Henry Clay would ever enter in partnership; Clay was also the only person who presumed to call Richard Henry by the name of "Dick". According to "Aunt Eliza" in "Social Life in Old New Orleans": "My Mother would never have dared to do such a thing". One of the sons of Richard Henry Chinn was named "Henry Clay" after his old law partner. In an article written by Great Aunt Ellen Alvarez Chinn Jarvis Conway, she makes mention of the fact that Henry Clay was a frequent visitor in the Chinn home. On one occasion she made a handkerchief for him which he always carried and used in the process of wiping his hands after taking a pinch of snuff. Richard Henry Chinn served twice in the Kentucky legislature... each time being elected by unanimous vote. The Honorable RICHARD HENRY CHINN married his (third) cousin, ELIZABETH (BETSY) MOORE HOLMES (with who, it is said, he fell in love with when he was six and she was three.) The Mother of ELIZABETH MOORE HOLMES was SUSAN (SUCKY) CHINN, a daughter of the union between CHARLES and SYNTHE CHINN, and sister of JOHN CHINN who married MILDRED HIGGINS. Fourteen children were born to RICHARD HENRY and ELIZABETH MOORE HOLMES CHINN. All of the children were born in Kentucky where he practiced law until approximately 1836. At that date he moved his family to Louisiana and took up his practice in the city of New Orleans. The youngest of the fourteen children of RICHARD HENRY and ELIZABETH MOORE HOLMES CHINN was Elizabeth Moore Chinn McHatton Ripley (Aunt Eliza) author of "from Flag to Flag" and "Social Life in Old New Orleans". 1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] William Carter - Lancaster Co. Va
    2. Kathleen Much
    3. Joseph Lyon Miller, author of _The Descendants of Capt. Thomas Carter_ (Richmond, VA: Whitet & Shepperson, n.d.), didn't think that William was a brother of Thomas Carter who m. Katherine Dale. He wasn't even sure that John or Edward was, though circumstantial evidence points in that direction. I haven't seen anything linking William to the other Carters, but of course absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence. Miller says, pp. 9-15: "Captain Thomas Carter I of Corotoman, Lancaster County, married Katherine Dale. From the patent books Thomas Carter first appears in Virginia in 1637. He was then living in Isle of Wight County. A ship captain speaks of a Captain Thomas Carter of Nansemond on the James River as having certain tobacco. Major John Carter, Colonel Edward Carter, and Captain Thomas Carter were very closely associated in land ownership, land exchange and sale, both in Nansemond and in Lancaster. It is also interesting that all three were of about equal military rank. John, Edward, and Thomas owned land in Lancaster. John and Thomas lived on the Corotoman Creek. The first land which Thomas Carter I possessed here (1657) seems to have been a purchase from Colonel John Carter. Although there is no proof that these men were related, these facts and others furnish strong evidence that they were (see Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. I, by Nugent). Two authorities on the Carter family indicate that they may have been brothers." 3. It is not only too much information but also too little time....I had a wonderful example this past week or so....Craig is also on the list that I am referring to. I read but rarely comment on the "Research and writing about Virginia genealogy and family history." <[email protected]> mail list. It is a wonderful list. There was a thread going on that I wasn't deleting yet....but I wasn't reading either....(which means that eventually I'll delete on a day when I am doing housekeeping on my computer) about a lady named Katherine Banks. A URL was sent to read an article that was written in a GA newspaper for women's history day....none of that jumped out at me....about six messages later a lady posted the following: > Katherine was my 9th g g'mother by her daughter, Katherine Royall, her daughter, Katherine Perrin, her daughter, Catherine Farrar, her daughter Frances Barnett, her son John C Burmett, his son, Michaj Burnett, his daughter, Deliah Frances Burnett, her son, Thomas Jefferson Abbott, his son, Newton Thomas Abbott, his son, Edmond Thomas Abbott, then me. Nancy And that is all that she posted in her e-mail. I descend from a man named Perrin Farrar who lived in Lousia County, VA in the 1800's......SUDDENLY I was EXTREMELY interested in the posts.....and it looks as if I have some huge clues to look at that may take me back to Jamestown in the 1600's on a family line. I have known that there is a lot of information on the Farrar line and that it was interesting....but I just have never had the prod to get started on the line. Too busy in the Northern Neck and Orange/Culpeper/Louisa and the Revolution in NC, SC, Ga, and Va to spend time on it. If anyone wants the information on Katherine Banks, I'll be glad to send you the URL or article ....unless someone else on this list gets to it first. But the point that I am trying to make is that extra time trying to get other's attention by a well planned or SHORT e-mail is time well spent--just as Craig was saying . marsha moses PS Don't forget the subject line....which of the two subjects that are separated by an "or" in my subject line is more likely to get a response from a reader? , Craig Kilby wrote: > .... > > I do know that my attention span for email is limited. .... > Craig > >

    1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] New size of post rule
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. In response to popular demand, I have now changed the size of any particular post to 5 kb. That will prohibit the posting of ten-generation emails here. I have only banned two people on this large list since its inception in September 2009. I think I have only used the "moderate" list tool once. There are about 170 members on this list. This list has lots of great people, and lots of shared data and information. As the list administrator, it is my job to make the list run smoothly. This is why I have asked many times that each member stick to one topic at a time, and keep it simple. To this aim, reducing a post to 5 kb instead of 15 kb may help those who cannot grasp this concept to learn how to better correspond with others. Yes, this is my option as the list owner. I realize at first this will increase my work in terms of "bounces" that you will not see, and in which case I will simply return the bounced message back to its sender as "exceeded length." Bear with us as we try something new. Craig

    3. As one who "falls asleep at the wheel" and I don't think I'm alone (I think Craig has nodded off a few times himself)..... what is being said is a fundamental rule on all lists. If everyone would read their welcome letters it is clearly set out in all of them. Each List Administrator posts the rules for the list in the welcome message that you receive when you join a list. These rules vary from list to list. Craig is the list administrator and therefore has the last word on the subject. As the old saying goes..... "ours is not to reason why, our is but to do or......." in this case get banned from the list. LOL I prefer to not argue with the captain of the ship! 3. Janean, You are by no means alone here. While I don't know if I have "Adult ADD" or not, I do know that my attention span for email is limited. I suspect most of us are the same. A query should be just that: a query. This means: one thing at a time. Not 100 things at a time. If one is posting new information, then make that clear too. And not 100 things at a time. Because if it isn't clearly written up front what one is talking about, and wanders off into umpteen other issues, it just goes to the delete file. (Read on) Keep each email separate and apart with one topic at a time. I say this so that posters will get the best results from a wide audience. Irrelevant information only distracts from what it is you are seeking to find answers to. Source information IS encouraged, but not when it disrupts the flow of the text., put it at the end of a paragraph (about one subject) or at the end of the entire email. On that topic, as Elizabeth Shown Mills says, any source citation is better than no source citation. Sometimes it can be figured out. Try to keep messages (at a time) to no more than three paragraphs. In my experience, this is the best method for using list serves like this to their fullest potential. I realize I have used more than three paragraphs in this message, against all the rules I learned in HIgh School English and my own admonishments. The internet is a different world, and we need to learn what works and what does not. Thinks look very different from your computer screen than from a printed version you read in your armchair. 3. I know for me especially..... with Adult ADD, I get totally lost in too much information. However there have been occasions where I have had to draft a somewhat wordy request for info on someone in particular because of the (1) common name he has, and (2) to show WHY I think he is the person he is. I have this carefully worded letter saved for when ever I need it. A lot of people have asked me time and time again.... questions about him..... or have given me tons of info I already have..... I hate for people to go to all the trouble to look up stuff I already have so I try to be explicit but not too overwhelming. Often times I will ask a very specific question and preface it by saying "I already have tons on this family but just need to know........ xyz" But I agree, complete family trees of 8 generations are TMI. Thanks for the reminders. You could actually do like a "thought for the day" type column. "the reminder for the day is"......... lol Just don't put it at the bottom where the unsubscribing info is because no one reads that either. 1. [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Looking for Middleton Shaw (early 1700s) in Stafford
    2. R. C. Solomon
    3. I am looking for information about Middleton Shaw in connection with an ancestor of mine Thomas Shaw (free African American & founght in the Rev. War soldier as a substitute). I found Middleton Shaw on two Northern Neck land grants in 1728 and 1731 in Stafford county near the Tuscarora Branch and he appears on other grants in that time period as an adjoining property owner. But I have not found a will or other deeds yet. If someone out there has any information on him, I would be grateful.
