    1. Re: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] William Downman d 1712 & Wife Elizabeth
    2. Janean Ray
    3. Ok I think I've figured it out...... Basically, Elizabeth is their daughter. Mom, Million was unable to come to court to administer the oath of her husbands will when they wanted to prove it on May 7th 1712 so John Tarpley and James Griffin went to her.... to administer the oath and they then made a report thereof and returned that to court to be present at the next court with the Will. THEN, on June 4, 1712 The Last Will and Testament of WILLIAM DOWNEMAN, deced., was this proved in Court by the Oath of WILLIAM ACKERS and WILLIAM GOAD and ordered to be recorded, and ELIZABETH DOWNEMAN, the Executrix therein named having taken the Oath of an Exrx. before Capt. JOHN TARPLEY and Mr. THOMAS GRIFFIN according to a former Order of this Court, Probate of her Husband's Estate is accordingly granted her.. So basically she stepped in "the executrix therein named having taken the oat before John Tarpley and Thomas Griffin..... according to a former order. I think there are some important words missing here... this is an abstract... so not complete and taken out of context. Here are my notes on William Downman Downman, William. 23 May, 1711 - 4 June, 1712. Son Rawleigh, son Robert, son Travers, son William; daughter Million, daughter Elizabeth; son Glascock; daughter Priscilla. Downman, William. 8 June, 1727 - 21 March, 1728. Son Travers; daughter Priscilla; grandsons William and Rawleigh, sons of son Rawleigh Downman; sons William and Travers, and daughters Million Glasscock and Elizabeth Downman and Priscilla Heale. William Downman, North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., Will; 23 May 1711, 4 Jun 1712 son Rawleigh tract of land bought of Edward King called "Mt. Sion" and 250 ac. bought of Charles Caleb; son Travers all the land I bought of Arthur [Attey] in the forest of Moraticon; son William what moneys son Glascock owes me for the millstones and what belongs to them; daus. Million, Elizabeth, Priscilla; ex: wife; wits: Abraham Goad, William Ackers, William Goad. So I think Elizabeth was named Executrix to stand in for her mother in court per a previous order of the Probate of Williams estate... I think the wording is just confusing. A year later William Fox filed a complaint against the estate it appears and names John Tarpley..... Mrs. Million Downman and George Glasscock who happened to be Millions' son-in-law. I think if you saw the whole will it would make much more sense. 3. My James CLARKSON was a British soldier who deserted -- I think I should get in -- he helped the cause. He was a weaver and settled in Essex County. NOW a relative shared his (very old 1777) leather journals with me. In the information it says that James' wife Mary ADAMS is a niece of George WASHINGTON. Does anyone know of ADAMS family being related to Washington? I have seriously looked for Mary ADAMS; they were married 14 Jun 1778 by Rev. Jesse CARTER. -----Original Message----- From: Edward White Sent: Wednesday, September 07, 2011 3:16 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Old DAR Registers (Was Forged Bible) Can you get in the DAR if your ancestor was in the King's Own North Carolina Rangers? 3. Thanks, Janean. I agree that the Mayflower Society welcomes corrections to its records. Previously, I wrote an article that was published in "Mayflower Descendant" that uncovered five additional children of a fifth generation descendant of Francis Cooke. The five 'forgotten' children were listed as "full-blood" siblings in the will of a twice-widowed childless sibling who was documented. No one had connected the dots. I am also obviously a Mayflower Descendant through John Tarpley and Elizabeth Travers Harwar's mother Frances Allerton. The Mayflower Society is always looking for corrections to their published work and this would be of great interest to them as it opens the door to many more Allerton descendants which at this time there are not as many as other lines of descent from the Mayflower so I look forward to seeing what all has been discovered. 3. Charlene, Thank you for the whole story. The short version being that one Sarah Sullivan Ervin was a fraud, and simply manufactured "evidence" so her wealthy clients could get into the DAR in the early 1900s. She wasn't alone in that game. Not long ago, the DAR published a new guide, in which they strongly advice ALL libraries and genealogical societies and anyone else for that matter, to deaccession ALL of their lineage books. They came out with one last volume in 2003, but even now they advise to simply use their web site to verify ANYTHING in their database (which changes daily). The 2003 issue was in three volumes, and this is the MBW catalog entry for volume 1: "Volume 1 of 3 of the last-to-be-published hard copy index to DAR-recognized patriots. All previous versions should be discarded. The DAR does not intend to publish any future editions in hard copy. Instead, visit the DAR on-line library at http://www.dar.org/library/. Gift of Suzanne Collins Matson, Secretary, North Carolina Society of the DAR. " ------------- Mrs. Matson donated her copies to the MBW in 2010. I have deaccessioned the older ones though in checking our catalog I may have to take a 2nd look to be sure I purged all of them. This also reminds me to remove the ones at the NNVHS library in Montross, where I will be most of tomorrow. Those have not yet been entered into our catalog. (See next email). Janean -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Scott Tracy Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2011 12:59 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Tarpley Research Hello, everyone. As the newest NN mailing list member, I would like to introduce myself. I am Scott Tracy and I have been researching the Tarpley family of eighteenth-century Richmond County on-and-off for nearly two years. First, I would like to recognize Craig Kilby who has helped me access copies of certain primary documents in Virginia related to my Tarpley-family research project. As you might imagine, long-distance research is not easy. LDS film and UVA interlibrary loans will get you only so far. Without someone on the ground, this project would have taken much longer. As Craig mentioned in an earlier post, Barbara Vines Little elected to publish several transcriptions of documents that were unearthed in the course of the research project in the current edition of the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy. In all candor, these transcriptions are somewhat peripheral to my primary research objective but I believe Barbara recognized that they might generate interest in the main manuscript to follow for a number of reasons. First, the identity of the father of the two grandchildren of Elizabeth Ripping Tarpley of Williamsburg (second wife of King's Attorney for Richmond County, John Tarpley (1695-1736/37)) proved to be in contradiction to the published position of Kevin P. Kelly in his research paper "The White Loyalists of Williamsburg" currently posted on the Colonial Williamsburg website - http://research.history.org/Historical_Research/Research_Themes/ThemeRevolut ion/Loyalist.cfm. Second, the named father (according to the reading of the lost ! will of Elizabeth Ripping Tarpley originally presented in 1772 that was discovered in a legal suit brought by one of her grandsons in 1789) turned out to be James Tarpley, the highly regarded Williamsburg merchant who donated the church bell to Bruton parish. Finally, discovery of lost wills from colonial times always seems to be of interest. The fact that one grandson was a loyalist while the other took the American side adds another twist. My primary research objective has been to obtain clarity regarding the life of John Tarpley (1720-1786/87), second son of King's Attorney John Tarpley and first wife, widow Elizabeth Travers Harwar. Highly respected genealogists and historians have disagreed for many years on whether this John Tarpley born in 1720 survived past maturity. It is my impression that most scholars seem to have deferred to the position of Newman Arnold Hall and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, which was that this John Tarpley died young. Others prominent researchers have struggled with this issue including Zelma Wells Price in 1963 and John Frederick Dorman (as recently as 2007 in Vol. IV of Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, which states John Tarpley, b. 1720, was the son of the second wife, Elizabeth Ripping. On the other side of the divide were George H.S. King and Ruth Dillon (author of The Chinn Book), neither of whom provided proof for their assertions (at least public! ly). As Mr. King phrased it, "when a man [John Tarpley (1720-1786/87] marries two ladies of the same Christian name [(1) widow Elizabeth (Travers) Harwar and (2) Elizabeth Ripping] and has a son by each union named after him and himself died intestate - these circumstances are quite sufficient to lead to misconceptions". In 1936, Ethel Armes wrote in Stratford Hall: The Great House of the Lees that using the same baptismal name for children when there were different fathers or mothers was not uncommon in colonial Virginia, and "frequent instances of this occur in the Northern Neck." So, at this point, I would like to simply say that the to-be published article in MVG will provide irrefutable proof that John Tarpley (b. 1720) did NOT die young; instead, he outlived his older full-blood brother Travers, his older half-sisters by his mother and first husband Thomas Harwar, and his younger half-siblings by his father and second wife Elizabeth Ripping - and that he had numerous descendants. Out of respect for Barbara Vines Little and her colleagues at MVG, I don't plan to share specific details of the proof until the article is published. I will add only that there have been a number of discoveries regarding this prominent family that contradict currently-held beliefs. Regarding the list-server question of obtaining copies of the current MVG transcriptions, Ms. Little is checking and will let me know and I will pass on that information. Best regards to all, Scott ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

So here they are: (1) The list archives. This is fully searchable from this URL: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=va-northern-neck >From this site, you'll see a link to list to messages by month and year, but more importantly you will notice the "search" link on the upper right. From there, you can search, say, TARPLEY, either if it is in the subject line or buried somewhere within the body of some message--you'll have choices to make there. It's a great little tool if you are like me and don't keep each and every e-mail in your inbox. (2) If you are subscribed in "list mode" you will receive each message sent to this as a separate email. If you find that this is causing too much unwanted clutter in your in-box, you may change your subscription to "digest mode" and you will receive the messages in a bundle as one email, and you can see a group of emails at one time. This depends on the number of new messages sent at any particular time. This has its ups and downs. See next. (3) If you do NOT want to contribute any messages to the list, NOR receive any emails from the list, you can unsubscribe but still read what is being discussed by going to the list archives, above. (4) When replying to a message, PLEASE highlight ONLY the portion of the message to which are replying. PLEASE delete the rest of it. This is particularly important to a) save bandwidth and b) not annoy our members who are on digest mode. If you reply to the entire original message(s) without cutting out what has already been said, the people on digest mode will have to wade through the same thing over and over and over. This includes cutting out the rootsweb trailers at the end of EVERY email. (5) If you are switching subjects, then change the subject line. If the original thread was, say, "Tarpley" but the conversation morphs into, say, "Ball", then change the subject line to reflect the new topic. This is important for a lot of reasons, which should be obvious. If I am not interested in the Tarpleys but I am interested in the Balls, I may delete your message if the subject line is Tarpley but the message is really about Ball. This is doubly true for people in Digest mode. (6) If you are in digest mode, and want to reply to a message, you must highlight the message to which are your are replying (or it's pertinent parts) and be sure to include TO WHOM you are replying. (e.g., On 4 Sep Craig Kilby wrote....). If you simply hit reply you will end up copying the ENTIRE digest in your reply. Further, the subject line--if you do not change it--will simply say "Digest Vol. 12345, Vol. 12345"--which is pretty meaningless as a subject line. (7) Try to limit your messages to one specific topic/issue at a time. Do not post multi-generational charts and talk about multiple people and generations all in one message. Be as succinct as you can and be specific in what your point or question is. You will have a much better chance of getting replies this way. Just a friendly reminder and I might add our group here is one of the best on rootsweb. Thank you to everyone for all you contribute and discuss. Craig Kilby List Administrator

    2. It may be worth checking out Elizabeth Medstand LEE, dau of Charles LEE (Richard and Ann Constable) and Elizabeth MEDSTAND/MEDSTARD (Thos.) of Cobb's Hall Will of Charles LEE "Northumberland county, Virginia, July Ye 13, 1700. I, Charles Lee, being in perfect health and strength of memory do make this my last will and testament. First, I give and bequeath my soul to my blessed Redeemer Jesus Christ, assuredly trusting, in and by His meritorious death and passion, to receive salvation, and my body to be disposed of as my loving wife shall . . . not doubting, but at last both body and sole will be renovated and glorified. Next, I give to my son Thomas all my land on Rappahannock riverside, had by my wife, as also five hundred acres left me by WALTER JENKINS, to him and his heirs male. One featherbed, and further a child's part of my negroes, cattle and household stuff, and in case of his death without heirs, to be divided among my other children. Next, I give and bequeath to my son Charles the six hundred acres whereon I now am, a featherbed and furniture, a child's part of my negroes and cattle with other household stuff, and in case of his death before age, to be equally divided among the other children. Next, I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth, a child's part of my negroes and cattle, with other household stuff. The half of my white servants, and in case of her death before age to be equally divided among my other children. Lastly. I give and bequeath to my loving wife all my bedding not set down, and an equal part of my negroes and cattle, the half of my white hands, with a child's part of my other household stuff. My part of the mill, and all my sheep and hogs. Whom I make executrix of this, my last will and testament. As witness my hand and seal the day and year above written. CHARLES LEE Die. December, 1701. Then Mr. John Tuberville, for Mrs. Elizabeth Lee, executrix of Captain Charles Lee, deceased, motioned the county court of Northumberland, for a probate to be granted of this will, and the court perused the will and were of opinion that, as well ye words of as the subscription to the said will, are his own hand, written by himself, and doe therefore grant to her, the said Elizabeth, probate of ye said will.
