Have I received a invite? Mary Buchholz [email protected] I just got back from a trip to Phoenix so I might have missed it. I don't need to be a editor (I don't know much about Colonial Virginia -- my CLARKSON comes in 1777. But I do know Ancestry and spend a LOT of time on it. and I love doing genealogy so if I could help I sure would. I've signed up 19 folks as Editors (and a few Guests) to the NN Tree - only 5 have accepted the invites, so far. Hard rule - you must respond to the invite that Ancestry will send you. It probaly asks for your real name and email and a nickname that will be what everyone else sees (could be your real name again or any other flight of fancy you want). it may have some marketing checkmarks - review them carefully - it you start getting emails from Ancestry you don't want, you can always find an optout at the bottom of them. If you elect not to accept the invite (for any reason), please let me know, so I can remove you from my tracking list. I'm an Ancestry subscriber, and I don't get more than one email a month from them... Jim Bartlett
Craig and Jim, Check. Got it. I'll email Jim. Thanks, Amanda
Amanda, Jim said to note there is an "s" after the bartlett is in his email address. He can sign you up as view only or as a contributor instead of an editor. We are not going to follow "The Marshall Plan." That is a static site whereby people can post information but nothing gets changed unless he does it. This site on ancestry.com is a joint effort with several editors, of which all on this list were invited yesterday if you simply send an e-mail to Jim Bartlett per yesterdays post. If you are NOT comfortable with making changes due to lack of specific sources, then ask to be signed up as a contributor or "read only" member. The latter category may be moot as it is set up as a public list in "view only" format already. Craig On Sep 28, 2011, at 1:43 PM, Amanda Douglass wrote: > Craig, > > I'm lost in all this. Amanda, You are not the only one who seems to be confused. The site is on ancestry.com It is a public list and Jim Bartlett will be sending out an URL to it. I don't think you have to be a member to view it. Some people will be editors. It has nothing to do with facebook. It is called Northern Neck of Virginia Families and if you already have an ancestry.com you should be able to find it somewhere--shared trees I would guess. Hope this helps, Craig On Sep 28, 2011, at 1:43 PM, Amanda Douglass wrote: > Craig, > > I'm lost in all this. Can I just ask one question. Craig, I'm lost in all this. Can I just ask one question. Is there a Northern Neck Families website that has been set up something like what Mike Marshall did for his site called "1658-1758 Charles County MD Families "The first 100 years" " and it's set up at Rootsweb under Ancestry? You can see what Mike posts but you cannot change any of it. He has to make additions or corrections, etc. So sorry but I don't want to miss out on something that sounds so great. Is this just for people who do face book to access? Amanda
Our tree has been established at Ancestry.com I made a mistake - although it is a Public tree - it cannot be viewed without an Ancestry subscription OR an invitation OR view it at a library or FHC that does have a subscription. You can go to Ancestry, without a subscription, and search for someone - if you search for George Washington, you will get many hits in Public Family Trees, including ours - you can see all the links, but you cannot go to any of them without a subscription OR invitation. Sorry (my Ancestry cookie let me in, so I had to get out of Ancestry to see it as others do - my bad). The good news is that if you email me, off-line, I will send you an invitation, and you can see our Tree. For those who have already done this, please post a report here of your experience in navigating an Ancestry Tree through an invitation, but without a subscription. Anyone who has an Ancestry subscription, can go to the site directly at: [1]http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/30617119/person/12287869852 Jim Bartlett References 1. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/30617119/person/12287869852
Janean, In the meantime, put a copy of your email below with your other important papers - so your survivors will at least know your wishes, until you can document them better. Also, please send me an email off-line with the email you want me to use to make you an Editor of our NN Tree - perhaps I typed it wrong, but I got an error message: invalid email... Jim, Giving it more thought and having some feedback from members, there remains confusion on just what this is all about. Therefore, YES it should be a public view only site. And in that case, is there an URL we can post here that people can use to go see it? If they are interested in what they see, they can ask to become editors. However, we should probably that run that traffic through this list and our fb page. Craig

I might add, there may be more going on here than first thought. The Trading Path passes through Bute Co, NC. then splits in western NC into a Ga/SC and a TN/KY migration route. Many of the Westmoreland folks I'm finding in Bute Co, NC are living fairly close to Williamsboro, NC, the home base of the Transylvania Land Co.,(Richard Henderson, Daniel Boone, etc.). But, for Va researchers, what may not be commonly known is that Landon Carter was a partner in this venture. So, if you ancestors left the NN and showed up later in TN/KY or GA/SC, you might want to check this stop over point first. http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncstate/historical/Bute/search.htm PS: If you find anyone, please let me know, as I have been tracking many of these families. -- Fred Duncan
