One thing I can tell you that is helpful is to look up your ancestor in records, and then find about something about everyone else who is mentioned, if only to get a feel for the times. I descend from Charles' daughter, Margaret, who married Martin Ables, then their son Jacob and his wife Sarah (Miller); their daughter, Barbara; her daughter, Jenny; Jenny's son, Thomas Shafer; my grandmother, Mary Shafer...my mother, Janet, and me!
