I am researching colonial Virginia Land Grants in Harrison County trying to determine the exact location of Levi Douglass' 400 acres that straddled Brushy Fork on the east side of Elk Creek; he received the grant on 2 October 1786. There is a grant of 580 acres to George Arnold that lies between the Douglass grant to the east and Elk Creek to the west. One line of the Arnold grant is described as "crossing Elk Creek ... at the Rocky Ford." My question is: where is Rocky Ford? Does it still exist by that name today? My belief from other topographical features described in the grants is that it is somewhere on Elk Creek between Stonewood and Quiet Dell about where I-79 crosses over Rt. 20. Being able to pin down the Rocky Ford location will help considerably in determing the location of the Douglass Grant. A grant to Matthew Nutter for 400 acres is bounded on the east side of the Douglass grant. Jim
Hi, Jim, My map shows a Brushy Fork of Elk Creek running at a diagonal across Harrison County SE of Clarksburg and flowing from (?) Barbour County. Elk Creek is running roughly parallel but south of Brushy Fork, along County Route 57. There is a place called Rocky Ford but it is much further south, southwest of Buckhannon, so perhaps the designation which you have noted has been lost over time.. Hopefully, someone else will know more.
