Iris, The dispute between PA and VA was not settled until 1780 and the permanent boundary line was not drawn until 1784. This land was disputed for such a long time that it might have taken decades for the citizens to adjust! Sent the following response to two PA lists where Jim had made the same inquiry, and I apologize to those who also receive those lists, but this response which may help you, too: Yes, the border between VA and PA was fixed by 1844, but it could have been that her family had been among those who still considered the area to be VA long after the border dispute was settled, especially if later they might have supported the southern states as some residents of SW PA did. Or, as I've seen happen, a woman about to give birth returned to the support of her parents' home for the birth. Given that scenario, if you had grown up in one state but were born in another one, you might use that state where you were raised as your "home" state and at other times, give your literal place of birth --- the other state. Recently, while in Harrisburg, I bought a map of PA which was created for the Historical and Museum Commission of PA by the Land Office, showing what they termed a "genealogical map of the counties" indicating the year in which counties were organized and depicting the changes in territorial claims as well as county shape and size in 15 maps spanning 1682-1932. Looked for this on the 'Net and found it at Willow Bend Books: http://www.ancientfaces.com/cgi-bin/shop/displayitem.cfm?IID=3368 for $2.00. Best regards, Jane
