Thank you Jane for all the information. I have some leads now. I was fortunate enough to find a book in the town where my G-grandfather lived and died that had mention of a George and David Caldwell in Cass Co. Indiana where they resided. I don't know if this was a young David (brother to George or a older David, father of George). I have been trying to find out when George left WVA and when he arrived in Indiana. I found his marriage record in Indiana in 1832. He and his large family of wife and children are on the 1850 census in Indiana. I know he arrived in CA in 1852. Thank you for your help.
