Hi, Lou, In Vol. I, John William Provence 164 Sarah Provence164, 183, 184, 275 William Yard Provence 164 P. 164, under the heading of "1767" earl Core quotes from the certificate book: "John Wm. Provence produced a certificate from the Commrs..... for 400 acres of land situate on the waters of Monna to be bounded by a line forty rods above the lick run to include his Settlement made in the year 1767." And, then Core writes: " John W. Provence and William Yard Provence settled on Provence's Bottom, German Township, Fayette County." He references Ellis' "History of Fayette," and Horn Vol. 3 map 9. Then Core goes on to say that it was Mrs. Sarah Provence who buried the murdered Indian chief, Bald Eagle, and here he references Withers' "Chronicles of Border Warfare," pp 135-136. He cites that story on pp 184 and 275 as well. On p. 183 quoting from the certificate book; "Sarah Province assee to Richard Lemasters is entitled to four hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on Mill Creek above the falls on both sides of sd Creek in the right of sd Lemasters right of Residence to include his improvement made in the year 1770." And, that is followed by the notation "Fayette Co." and that Mill Creek is a tributary of Big Sandy. p. 183-184 again from the cert. book: "Sarah Province assee to Robert Bennet is entitled to four hundred acres of Land in Monongalia County on Mill Creek below the falls of sd Creek in the right of sd Bennetts right of Residence to inlucde her Improvement made in the year 1770." Again this is followed by "Fayette County." This surname does not appear in Core's Volume II. Regards, Jane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jane McCann Walsh [email protected]
