Subj: Ever hear of ESQUIRE RUMBAUGH? My aplolgies to those who get this twice. Hello, I'm looking for help from anyone who is familiar with marriage records in the 1860s. I am searching the counties of western Virginia for another Laizure marriage. I have heard back from the Highland County Courthouse, and they have no record of a marriage between Hiram LAIZURE and Talitha Ann WATSON. Hiram said they were married on August 1, 1866 and Talitha said they were married on August 3, 1866 by ESQUIRE RUMBAUGH. Both agree that they were married in HARD SCRABBLE, VA. Has anyone else on the list ever had a marriage in their family recorded by Esq. RUMBAUGH? Was he even in the local area in the 1860s? At this point, I have tried 3 different areas called Hard Scrabble or Scrabble for this marriage record. 1. Hardscrabble, Highland County, VA 2. Scrabble, Rappan. Co., VA 3. Scrabble, formerly Hard Scrabble, Berkeley Co., WVA. Does anyone else have any ideas where to look? I notice that Washington County, MD had a Hard Scrabble in the past. I would hope Hiram and Talitha were better at geography, than to confuse the two states, but I will be writing there next. Thanks, Sharon Hofer Ontario, California
Hello listmembers, I've transcribed & uploaded the 1930 Poor House census to the Harrison Co WVGenWeb page. I now have all available census years online: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930. I also have the 1920 HC Children's Home census online, and am in the process of transcribing the 1930. The following is a link to the GenWeb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvharris/ Just click on the "Harrison Co Records" link. Enjoy! I am trying to find information on John Crouch, 1773-1859, who was married to Mary Fornelson, who was the daughter of Charles Fornelson. The only information I have been able to come up with about Charles is the following: Randolph County WV deed book 3 pages 30-31, dated March 1801, John Crouch and wife Mary, heirs and legatees of Charles, deceased, relenquish their rights to land where Charles lived. And then once again his name appears in a Legislative Petition of Augusta County Va on 11-7-1780 I am trying to find more about Charles and his family. Thanks Randy
I am searching for information on an Esther Clemens( Clemmons/ Clemans) who was a taxpayer in Harrison County in the late 1700s/early 1800 period. Does anyone know whether Esther was a widow as she seemed to be the property owner. Are there wills in Harrison County for the 1808/ 1825 period which might give a clue as to Esther's heirs? I have information from Burlington Co NJ which leads me to believe that Esther was the Esther Burroughs who married Judah Clemens but I have no verification of that . Any help on this puzzle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jessie, Calif
Hello Everyone, I have a few pictures of the crossroads class taught by Lawrence Pyles, they are two seperate ones. Lawrence is younger in one picture than the other. I can only guess the years by judging his age, he is my great grandfather, he was born Feb. 24, 1886 and he died June 1, 1946. He looks to be in his 20's to early 30's in one picture and in his 40's to early 50's in the other. So if anyone out there either attended or a family member attended this school and think they can help me identify any of the students I will e-mail them the pictures. For photo # 1 the years would probably be in the 1920's and for photo # 2 the years between 1920's and 1930's. My grandfather said his father was one of his teachers when he went to school, he was born in 1907. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Brenda Miller

Last year with other committments, I wasn't able to get anything together. This year, though still on overload, I have just ordered some navy tee shirts and natural tote bags with navy handles that will be imprinted next week with a similar mountain design-- 3rd Annual Nutter Gathering August 17, 2002. Nutter Fort, WV Due to my only lately getting excited about it, I have ordered only a dozen of the tote bags. They will be $5. Any proceeds will go to the treasurer of our association. They are 15" x 14.5" x 3" in the same style as last time. They are natural color with navy braided handles and are great for many uses Now the tee shirts will be sold on first come-first serve basis. I am ordering various sizes based on the order from 2 years ago. I hope I can sell them all. If there are any left, I will post a note on the list and mail them. The T-shirts will be $6 for children's 6-8 or 10-12, $8 for sizes S to XL, $9 for sizes 2X and 3X. My printing company/supplier here has given me a catalog and a sample cap to bring to the reunion that we might think about ahead of time for next year. The cap would have a colored bill and the rest natural. The turn-around time on them is 10 days though, so we will plan for them next year if anyone is interested and we can sell them for $5. If you know what size shirt you need and if you want a tote bag, I will reserve them for you at the reunion. Anyone? E-mail me off-list at marien@frognet.net Thanks. Hope to see many of you there! Iris, The dispute between PA and VA was not settled until 1780 and the permanent boundary line was not drawn until 1784. This land was disputed for such a long time that it might have taken decades for the citizens to adjust! Sent the following response to two PA lists where Jim had made the same inquiry, and I apologize to those who also receive those lists, but this response which may help you, too: Yes, the border between VA and PA was fixed by 1844, but it could have been that her family had been among those who still considered the area to be VA long after the border dispute was settled, especially if later they might have supported the southern states as some residents of SW PA did. Or, as I've seen happen, a woman about to give birth returned to the support of her parents' home for the birth. Given that scenario, if you had grown up in one state but were born in another one, you might use that state where you were raised as your "home" state and at other times, give your literal place of birth --- the other state. Recently, while in Harrisburg, I bought a map of PA which was created for the Historical and Museum Commission of PA by the Land Office, showing what they termed a "genealogical map of the counties" indicating the year in which counties were organized and depicting the changes in territorial claims as well as county shape and size in 15 maps spanning 1682-1932. Looked for this on the 'Net and found it at Willow Bend Books: http://www.ancientfaces.com/cgi-bin/shop/displayitem.cfm?IID=3368 for $2.00. Best regards, Jane
Thanks Jane, For all the information, I''ll check into the the map, Might be just what I need? By 1844 when your ggrandmother was born, the boundaries between VA (now WV) and PA were set as they exist today, including the northern boundary of Monongalia county. Jim
My ggrandmother, born in 1844, had sometimes given PA as the state she was born in, and sometimes she gave VA. I realize that Monongalia County, VA in the late 1700s extended up into what is now SW PA.; but I am wondering if there were any border changes in the 1800s in the SW corner of PA. Or, if my ggrandmother was born near the border of PA and VA, maybe she was confused about the state that she was born in. Also does anyone know if there are maps showing the different changes in state and county borders in this part of the country? Thanx, Lou
Hi Jim, and All I have just about the same questions as Lou, except my ancestors go back to the 1780's Gggg-grandfather has listed PA., Va, and I've also found MD.for the place of birth? and my G-Ggrandmother born in 1834 was listed on different documents born in PA.and VA.? I would be interested in knowing, if there is a website that would list the old and new State and County boundaries? Hi All, Just wanted to let you know that the address for Bill and Betty Riley has been changed. The server has dropped the 'access' part of the address and didn't notify us of the change. Had I not received a copy by smail of a returned email , I would not have known. Anyhow, according to a spokesperson for Mountain Net, the company is not sending through mail with the "access" in the address, therefore, I don't know what mail has not come through and if you have sent anything in the last month that has been returned to you, that is the reason. The "new" address is briley@mountain.net I will probably be sending another address before too long as I am seriously considering changing servers mainly due to this experience.
