Lillian, I think we have talked before regarding James Johnston? Can you tell me your lineage for him? Thanks, Sally Havens
Hi, I hope some one can help me to understand the difference between the "A" and "B" and "C" tax lists. I have the booklet, "The 1787 census of Virginia, Monongalia Co." but have a hard time understanding the difference between the A; B; & C list. Also, can anyone tell me where William Haymond was living in 1773? I have information that says, "William Haymond deposed his own conflicted claim to it saying, that he and James Johnston in the spring of 1773 went to Gerard Decker and Haymond contracted for the land from Decker." (County Ct. env. 57, Zinn 1:224) I hope someone can explain to me what this means?. I am interested in learning what area of Monongalia Co, that James Johnston and William Haymond were living in during the years of 1772-73? Any information is appreciated. Thank you, Lillian

Hi, Sondra, John SPENCER is not listed in Earl Core's first two books, covering that time period. However, there was a Private Joseph Spencer in Capt. Daniel Stewart's company which served from Feb. 20 to March 4 in 1815. Samuel Wiley in his 1883 "History of Monongalia County" does mention a John on p. 444. If 1826 was his year of death, this would not have been the same one. This one was a circuit riding Methodist Episcopal minister, appointed to the Redstone Circuit, Monongahela District in 1828. The only John Spencer in the census for Monongalia County appears there in 1840. Perhaps your John Spencer was actually in another county. That was a popular name! Best regards, Jane
Jane, Thank you very much, you are right, there are a lot of John Spencer's. He also had a son John Jr. Sondra Researching surnames : Ashford, McAtee, Elgin,McNier, James, Foley, Spencer, Snow, Conn. In the period 1790 to 1808 I have found an Esther Clemens on the list of taxpayers. I would deeply appreciate any information about her and her family. Was she a widow? If so, who was her husband? Was she the mother of John Clemens? Did she come from Burlington County ,NJ? Thanks for any information on the Clemens family of Harrison Co. Jessie, CA

So, it was likely a page from Vol. I which you photocopied. There's the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild which has been at Rootsweb. Gee, I wonder if that is now only available to Ancestry.com subscribers? I hope it is not restricted. You might try this: http://istg.rootsweb.com/ I did try all the volumes and none list any ships for 1762. I wonder why not! That is a bit late for the Welsh immigrants. Most of my Welsh ancestors arrived between 1682 and 1710. Seems that eventually there was greater religious freedom in Wales, or perhaps simply less persecution for beliefs not in tune with the Church of England, causing the migrations to lessen until they began again for economic reasons. You might try 1726, thinking that the numbers might have been inter-changed, or 1752, that a five was misread or mistyped as a six. Do you have other information which seems to corroborate the date of 1762? Best regards, Jane
Hi List, I am new to this list, this is my first day on it. I research several surnames in the Virginia area. Most of my research has been Loudoun Co. Ashford is one of those. It was William Ashford father Michael Ashford who died in Loudoun Co. Va. in 1804. William was his son I believe and a son in law was John Rightmire, this I have by way of the will of Michael Ashford. I did not know that William Ashford was a possible Tavern owner until today. I do not have a lot on William Ashford and would love any information that anyone would share with me. What I do have on William Ashford is as follows: LOUDOUN CO.LAND DEED BOOKSs: Bk:Pg: 2E:020 Date:1/25/1804 Returned to court: 10 Apr 1804 William Ashford of Monnongahala Co to Michael Ashford of Ldn. Bill of sale for 3 horses and wagon. Wit: Thomas Hite, George Darr, Jane Ashford. Michael Ashford's will recorded in Loudoun Co. Va. 10 April 1804 reads in part : " I give and bequeath to my three grandchildren Jane, Anna and Michael Ashford the children of my son William one waggon three horse and gear with all there unto belonging it being the wagen and horses I go from my Son William. " Monongalia Co. Deed book Records, 1784-1810, (Old Series Volumes 1-4), by Rick Toothman 14 May 1802 William and Elizabeth ASHFORD to John Minton, Fayette Co., PA 277 acres on a drain of Cheat River, adjoining James Conner and John Floyd. Patented to Peter Clutter, 6 Jun 1796. consideration $600. Witnesses: none. Acknowledged in court. June 1802. Del. to Benj Minton pr father's order, 9 December 1802. Recorded: OS 2:466 Any help or new information on William Ashford or John Rightmire would be wonderful. I am happy to share what I have on any surname I am researching. Sondrs Sondra

Hi, Alice, So far it seems that there isn't sufficient information in these books for you. I believe that this was a four or five volume set with the first two covering the early years. Those are the only two I have at this point. They were republished and available from McClain Printing which has a website I believe. > Also would William Ashford possibly have gotten a Tavern >liscense for John Rightmire. and then John and Anna (Ashford) Rightmire ran >the tavern ? I suppose that is possible but I really do not know. > William Ashford died in 1804 in Loudoun County according to >an Ashford researcher I am working with. Perhaps ASHFORD became ill and wanted to return home so had RIGHTMIRE take over the tavern for him. It might have taken awhile for Ashford's estate to be settled and Rightmire could have run the tavern during that period, too. The section of Samuel Wiley's "History of Monongalia" which covers these early tavern licenses makes it sound like there was a fairly high turnover rate for the ones in Morgantown. For example, Wiley writes that thirteen tavern licenses were granted in 1797. One "kept tavern" for four years, another for five years, two others for two years, etc. Actually, reading Wiley's account, he writes something slightly different from Core's statement. Wiley says that in 1802 Bartholomew CLARK and G.R. TINGLE were licenses in Morgantown but he does not mention where William Ashford's tavern was located!! Core simply grouped all three together and said that they were licensed in Morgantown. Small point but it could be important for you. Regards, Jane
