    2. I think you misunderstood. William Malone, the man who listed Harrison Ferrell as surety, named HIS son Thornton (Malone). > One source has told me that Harrison was Thornton's brother, but I have never > been > able to verify it. Thanks for letting me know about that. It certainly does > appear to > be a relationship if Harrison named his son Thornton. >

    1. [VA-Har-Mon] Posting more than once the same message

    3. I think it was mentioned that some people re-send their messages after a few days. It seems to me that almost without exception when I post to any list that it is posted not once, but sometimes 2-3 times. This seems to happen with digests. I always wonder if the list thinks I am doing that. But I only post once 100% of the time and this happens. Dee.

The only problem is that I only know of one! Elizabeth Shafer/Shaffer/Shaver (many different spellings found) who was born around 1826. She married William McBee in 1850 in Monongalia Co. I'd like very much to know about her family. Do you know of any Elizabeth Shafers in your tree??? Thanks, Jill

    2. Jan, Can you tell me how I go about ordering these books about Monongalia's Bicentennial? I just saw your post about names listed in the book and saw some for Johnson/Johnston. I would like to get an address and to know total cost on each volume. Is there a catalogue? Thanks, Sally Havens

    3. <<I too am interested in the Smith Family. John Sr. and Jr., Lewis, Levi, Enoch, Riley, Washington, Thomas, William, Peter and Jackson. Also, Justus Heck, William Hess , Jesse Fetty and Thaddeus Arnett. Thank you, Sherry Ray, Kent, Washington>> There was a corporal Lewis Smith in Capt. James Hurry's Militia Company, raised in Monongalia and Brooke Counties and serving from May to August 1814. There were also privates George Smith and George B. Smith. Youst Heck (possibly the Justus Heck mentioned above) was one of the Revolutionary War veterans living in Monongalia County who received a pension under the congressional act of 18 March 1818. Have you checked to see if you can find his pension application? These usually have interesting information. There are so many William Smiths, I don't know how you'd tell if this entry is yours: "William Smith is entitled to four hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on Indian Creek adjoining lands of James Holylaw in right of residence to include his improvement made in the year 1774. Monongalia County." A William Smith also patented land on Lost Creek at Kings Luck, which is now in Harrison County. A William Smith and Augustus Smith, apparently related, patented land on Robinson's Run in what is now the Clay Dist. of Monongalia County. A William Smith traded with Indians in the area when it was still wilderness. Lot no. 37 in Morgantown was conveyed by Zaquill Morgan to William Augustus Smith on 14 November 1785; this is where the tavern was located. A plat map shows that this was on the corner of High St. and Walnut Street. A John A. Smith was a private in Capt. Wiiloughby Morgan's Militia Company in 1814. Brian Brian D. Core P.O. Hi, Ruby, On p. 178, in a listing of land certificates granted in 1770, in Vol. I: "James Dunwoody is entitled to four hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on the waters of Sandy Creek on the west side of McCollocks Road to include his Settlement made thereon in 1770 adjoining lands claimd by John Lafovour." That is followed by Core's notation that this land is now in Preston County. On p. 187, covering 1771, of Vol. I: "John Lafevors is intitled to four hundred acres of land Monongalia County on the waters of Sandy Creek Glades adjoining the lands of Samuel Robert in the right of residence to include his improvemnt mad ein the year 1771." Again, now in Preston County. Best regards, Jane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jane McCann Walsh [email protected]
