Betty, I'm not really working the Kerns line as it isn't a direct line. MyGr-Gr-Grandfathers daughter, Mary m. Michael Kerns. I've been looking in these collateral lines hoping to turn up more info on my direct lines. Michael
Have I responded to all of the queries for lookups in this book? It's not my intention to overlook anybody, but the immense volume of requests has me a little confused about which ones have been answered and which ones haven't. If you have a request, please get it to me promptly. After this weekend, I'd like to move on to other topics. Thanks, Brian Brian D. Core P.O. <<Is there anyone who has access to the book listed below who would be willing to look for me the given names of McCarley and Springer listed and the information given?>> Vol. 1: Adam McCarley gave oath that Jacob Beeson was entitled to land on the North Fork of the Hughes River, which is now in Ritchie County. Jacob, John, and Dennis Springer all patented land on Salt Lick Creek (now in Braxton County). Maj. Zadock Springer, who was stationed at Prickett's Fort, patented land on George's Creek, which is now in either German or George's Township in Fayette Co., PA. The territory was claimed by both PA and VA at the time. These patents can be looked up on the VA State Library website at: http://198.17.62.51/collections/ The books don't give any genealogical information about the Springers, but give abstracts of their land acquisitions and lists the various political offices they held. To Barbara, You may be a tie that I have been searching for. I saw your request to Brian regarding Dudley Evans and I am descended from him through his son, Nimrod. I have been trying to find info on the Martins, Dudley's mother, Rebecca Martin, but have not been successful. I have a great deal of info on the Evans line if you would need it and would love to know if you have anything on the Williams (Dudley's wife) or the Martin families. Thanks so much. <<Brian - When you have time to look, is there any Booth, McClelland, Evan Thomas, Dudley Evans referenced in the books>> Vol. 2 tells of Capt. John Thomas of Booth's Creek, brother of Evan Thomas. John Thomas and his family were murdered by Indians in 1781; this book paraphrases the account given in Wither's "Chronicles of Border Warfare." This last-mentioned book is widely available and inexpensive, and anybody who had pioneer ancestors in the area should own it. Vol. 1 has an abstract of Evan Thomas' land patent: "Evan Thomas is intiteled to four hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on the waters of Booth's Creek adjoining Thomas Batten's land in the right of Residence to include his Improvement made thereon in the year 1774. Hi, Folks, In honor of Black History Month, thought I'd share this tidbit spotted in Samuel Wiley's History of Monongalia pub'd in 1883. I was looking in the section on the Clinton District for the KISNER family requested this morning and found, instead, the following on p. 610: "Henry Dolton, a colored man, who had fought in the Revolutionary war, was among the early settlers in this district. He raised three sons --- Bethuel, Levi, and John. His remains lie buried in the woods a mile from clinton Furnace, and an oak tree over a foot in diameter grows on his grave." Hi, Lou, In Vol. I, John William Provence 164 Sarah Provence164, 183, 184, 275 William Yard Provence 164 P. 164, under the heading of "1767" earl Core quotes from the certificate book: "John Wm. Provence produced a certificate from the Commrs..... for 400 acres of land situate on the waters of Monna to be bounded by a line forty rods above the lick run to include his Settlement made in the year 1767." And, then Core writes: " John W. Provence and William Yard Provence settled on Provence's Bottom, German Township, Fayette County." He references Ellis' "History of Fayette," and Horn Vol. 3 map 9. Then Core goes on to say that it was Mrs. Sarah Provence who buried the murdered Indian chief, Bald Eagle, and here he references Withers' "Chronicles of Border Warfare," pp 135-136. He cites that story on pp 184 and 275 as well. On p. 183 quoting from the certificate book; "Sarah Province assee to Richard Lemasters is entitled to four hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on Mill Creek above the falls on both sides of sd Creek in the right of sd Lemasters right of Residence to include his improvement made in the year 1770." And, that is followed by the notation "Fayette Co." and that Mill Creek is a tributary of Big Sandy. p. 183-184 again from the cert. book: "Sarah Province assee to Robert Bennet is entitled to four hundred acres of Land in Monongalia County on Mill Creek below the falls of sd Creek in the right of sd Bennetts right of Residence to inlucde her Improvement made in the year 1770." Again this is followed by "Fayette County." This surname does not appear in Core's Volume II. Regards, Jane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jane McCann Walsh [email protected]

<<Is there a WISE in the books? My ancestor was Isaac Wise, b. 1818 Morgantown, Monongalia Co., VA. He married Elizabeth McCollough. some say her name was Elizabeth Lemon.>> Vol. 1, no Wise. Vol. 2, Joseph Wise was a private in Capt. Willoughby Morgan's Militia Company in 1814. Vol. 4, p. 135: On 26 March 1889, the Methodist Protestant Society was organized at the Buckeye School, Rev. W.W. Hart presiding. Plans were made to construct a church across from the schoolhouse. Present at the meeting were David and Leah Lemley (my g-g-g grandparents), D. N. and Sophronia Lemley (my g-g grandparents), Isaac and Susannah Bowers, Mattie E. Bowers, Elizabeth Lapoe, James and Hannah Poland, John Wise, Jr., Ida Wise, and William L. Garrison. I have photographs of some of these people, taken at Lemley & Headlee reunions. Most of them were related, either by blood or marriage. 4:119: "DUNKARD VALLEY BAPTIST CHURCH "A church group organized about 1881 in the village of Wise meeting in the schoolhouse near the covered bridge over Dunkard Creek, by 1888 had become so large that plans were made for a church building. Materials were taken from the forest nearby and hauled to the sawmill by ox-cart. The building was ready for use the same year. It was decided that this was to be a community church, but since it had to be under some general organization, it joined the Baptist Association. It was the only one in the vicinity at the time. The church was called the Dunkard Valley Baptist Church. Rev. Isaac Wise was the first pastor." The church burned on 15 December 1900, and was never rebuilt. 5:85 A Howard Wise was one of three men who robbed the Bank of Wadestown on 04 December 1935. One was shot dead, another wounded seriously, and Howard Wise was uninjured. He was arrested by the three state troopers who were lying in wait for them; an anonymous tip was called in several days earlier. Brian Brian D. Core P.O.
