    3. Hi Charlotte, excuse me for joining in but I have a friend who is searching for information on Elizabeth Wright m Joseph Pride in 1831. Would you have them in your files or know of someone who might help her? Thanks. 3. You all may not know, or may have forgotten, that Heritage Books published Harrison County, WV, Deed Records 1785-1810 by John David Davis a few years back. I just checked their website. The book is currently out of print. We have a copy here at the HCPD Library. . . . I do not have time to do lookups. However, I will pass these on to one of our volunteers to do lookups for you. This person is not computer literate and so sends responses by snail mail. Send your request to me and include your snail mail address. Please be as specific as you can. Joy Stalnaker

    1. Re: [VA-Har-Mon] Land Reccords?
    2. Jean, You are very right about delays in getting things recorded and /or settled. I suppose that the absence of roads and access to the court house, etc. had something to do with it. Also , where land was transferred from one family member to another unless there were multiple claimants there wasn't much point in doing the recording. I am so pleased that you reminded us of this source of information. Thank you. Jessie

    3. Dear Jessie, I always forget something. If you hope to use deeds to establish relationship, give yourself several years cushion. It may be 25 years or more before the land is sold and all the heirs settle with the buyer or sibling that wants the land. I have one case where it was 14 years later and another where it was 23 years. But both deeds were absolute gold mines as they listed every child of the original owner. Also, if the courthouse burned, do not give up. After a burning, people must establish ownership again of their land. Often they brought in the original deed to be re recorded. So again, I hit pay dirt when I had no idea there was a chance. Found children that I did not know existed. This establishment of ownership will be within a year or two of the burning. And, courthouses had a distressing habit of burning. Other records were not replaced, but, believe you me, where land and property is concerned those records come back. Hope this helps. I have found deeds to be one of the great unexplored areas of research and usually the most believeable. Jean

    3. These indexes start with the beginning date of the county and go up to the present time. All inclusive. That is why I suggested you set an upper limit to the time you want the index copies to cover. A common name can go on for page after page. Jean

    2. My daughter and I, and family cuz's have been searching for our Smith line....time to stretch out....looking for the siblings and parents of our William Smith b. 1926 m. to Nancy Renner in Greene co,PA.... Williams death record says he was born in Greene twp., Greene co. Biggest clue thus far is an "Aaron Smith" b. c1810, parents William b. c1786 and Sarah b.c 1790 in 1850 Greene census, (w/dau. Sarah b.abt.1830 +Sarah b c1846?)who also turns up in our William's and Nancy household in 1880 Greene census, listed as "brother".......Is there anybody out there with a William Smith b. c1786 that has two son's William b. 1826 and Aaron b. c1810 in there family line?.....Also a possible connection with John Smith too, who married Nancy Renner Smith's sister Hannah Renner. If any of these names rings a bell....please let me know. thank you barbara hoehn

    2. Jean, I think your suggestion on land records may just help solve my problem but may I ask what time period is covered by those Grantor/ Grantee indexes? I am directing this query to the list as I think others may benefit from your reply. Jessie, Calif

    3. I'll tell you what I did many years ago. I sent a check for 5 dollars. Asked for a copy of the Grantee/Grantor pages of the indexes for the last name I wanted, in that case it was Lowden. Then when I got those pages, I ordered the deeds for those names. I would send $10.00 now, but you will get first the list of deeds. You can limit it by setting an upper date for the index pages. Hope this makes sense, but it works. And you don't have to worry about trips, (cheaper) or hiring a researcher, etc. I have done this more than one at more than one Courthouse. The address would be the County Clerk of Harrison Co. Harrison County Courthouse, Clarksburg, WV. 26301. They will refund any overpayment or bill for underpayment. Jean

    3. Hi Alta, Don't know why, but I never did make the connection that we have the same ggg grandparents. I knew you were somehow connected to Nathan and Isabell Wright but didn't realize they were your ggg grandparents also--you through their son, Patrick and me through daughter Alice Victoria. Do you suppose we'll ever be able to find anything more on Nathan's parents? I have about given up. 3. Thank you Jane for all the information. I have some leads now. I was fortunate enough to find a book in the town where my G-grandfather lived and died that had mention of a George and David Caldwell in Cass Co. Indiana where they resided. I don't know if this was a young David (brother to George or a older David, father of George). I have been trying to find out when George left WVA and when he arrived in Indiana. I found his marriage record in Indiana in 1832. He and his large family of wife and children are on the 1850 census in Indiana. I know he arrived in CA in 1852. Thank you for your help. I may be asking some more questions later, if you don't mind. Jeanne

    2. Jane McCann Walsh
    3. Hi, Jeanne, Although this was not what you requested, perhaps it might help, particularly if someone else reads this who has another piece of the puzzle. From a book listing marriages in Harrison County, a David CALDWELL m. Eunice CLARK on Aug 12, 1801. Eunice was the dau. of Joshua CLARK. Then on 1/6/1826 a Martha Caldwell dau. of Eunice m. John MOUNTS. It would appear that David had died by 1826. Also, on 3/8/1826 Joshua "Calwill" [indexed as Caldwell] m. Hannah SAERE dau. of Jedediah and Elizabeth. These are the only Caldwell marriages, recorded in the County Courthouse, which took place in Harrison County in the first half of the 1800's. I've found that if two or more children in one family marry and if only a mother is listed as the parent of a woman, that it is very likely that the father died within the previous year. In Earl Core's Vol. I there is mention of a Joseph CALDWELL and a cert. for 400 acres on the Mon. River including his settlement there in 1771. Core adds that this was at the mouth of Indian Camp Run in Harrison County. Then Core writes that this Joseph may have been a brother in law of James CHEW or that this tract may have been in Fayette County [PA].. That's a puzzling comment! He references Vol. 3 of Horn, the map book, map 19. Another possible source for information would be to join the Harrison County Gen. Society which also has a list: [email protected] Hope this leads to something for you! Regards, Jane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jane McCann Walsh [email protected]
