Today we printed two new publications. 1) 1920 Lewis County Census Every Name Index to the microfilm or CD-Rom of the microfilm. Contains more than 22,000 names. Although we had advertised this in last Journal, we just finished it today. This was a big job for the compiler, Nettie Gregory. In time, we will have an abstract of the entire census. . . but who knows how long "in time" is -- $15. 2) Collins Settlement of Old, a manuscript published in the Weston Democrat in 1921-22, explores the history of that district of Lewis County. 60 pages. Paper back. . . A "must have" if you are researching in southern Lewis County. $9. Both may be order from our CyberShop at www.hackerscreek.com/shop Or. . . if you credit card is on file at HCPD, just send us an e-mail telling us what you want. Of course, you may also order by check. Send check to HCPD, 23 ABbotts Run Road, Horner, WV 26372 Joy

There are copies of the plats and tax records that are cross indexed. Many of the Realtors have copies in their offices. Patricia: I would be very grateful if you would check these records for CHIPPS, SCOTT. BURNS. Thank you. Irene
I get these all of the time --- one good way is to know the name of one current property owner in the area. The staff can look in the card file or tax book for that person and learn which map they are on . . . .then voila' - you have the map number. Thanks to Joy and others on this list who have torn down long standing brick walls, I am hot on the trail of my ancestors....now ,to push my luck even further, may I ask if anyone has any information on the Clemens family....The mother must have been Esther, sons William and John...and perhaps daughter Hopewell. The name turns up in tax lists in Harrison county from 1796-1806 in various spellings: Clemens, Clemmons , Clemmon, Clemin. Esther may have been a widow in 1796 as she is listed as the tax payer. Is there a previous list of wills for this county or for Monongalia County? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated . Again my heartfelt gratitude for those dedicated souls who have gone beyond the call of duty to help me. Jessie, Calif

Jim, Yes, the County Assessors Office does provide copies of maps - they a pretty helpful- it woould be best to locate the area you want on Burshy Fork on a State Road Map - Iand send it to them - I doubt the the clerks will have any way to locate the property unless you have the parcel number which includes their map number also - if you don't know their map number - it's a Catch 22 situation. The maps are not that expensvie I think $3.00 to $6.00 per map. Would be very interested in knowing which cemetery this was. I'm sorry I don't have any info on the Ridgwells. The reason I ask is that I'm planning a trip to Fairmont early this summer and 2 of the cemeteries I will be going to were last known to be overrun and the one was basically impossible to gain access to: Hallack Cemetery & the Old McIntyre Cemetery.
Thanks to the hard work of a half-dozen HCPDers and assistance from the State Archives, the 1784-1792 Harrison County Court Minutes are online. You will find a link to these as well as some other early Harrison County records at : http://www.hackerscreek.com/genilink.htm Have fun! Joy
