Paul and Listers: A booklet called A BICENTENNIAL 1775-1975 FORKS OF CHEAT BAPTIST CHURCH compiled by the church Historical Committee begins: The Forks of Cheat Baptist Church constituted Nov. 5, 1775 by Elder John Corbley, who was chosen pastor. Consisting of twelve members, namely: Samuel Lewellyn (chosen elder), John McFarland (chosen deacon), Thomas Mills, Thomas Evans, Joseph Boltinghouse, Hannah Lewellyn, Sarah McFarland, Martha Mills, Catharine Evans, Elizabeth Jackson...(no Stewarts) Elsewhere, The land for the first church was part of an original patent grant to Thomas Evans assigned by a Galleway in 1784. 1784 was the year the first patents came out on land by the governor of Virginia. The land was sold by Evans to Robert Stewart. Robert Stewart and Catherine, his wife, sold the land to the church for $5.00 on Sept.10, 1806... I don't know where/if the book is currently being sold. No doubt you could find it in the Morgantown libraries. The oldest Stewart (with marker found) was Elizabeth Stewart, 1799-7-20-1883, 84y, 5m, 27d. The cemetery listing is included in UNION DISTRICT CEMETERIES, MONONGALIA CO., WV by Marion County Genelogical Club, 321 Monroe St., Fairmont WV 26554. There was a Hopewell Baptist church in Clarksburg in the late 1700s founded by Daniel Davisson. It was at the corner of present day Chestnut and Main Streets. The cemetery is still there but is now called the Daniel Davisson Cemetery. Hi Emolene, My 3rd Gr-Grandfather Godfrey Guseman had a daughter Mary. She married James Kern 10/25/1820. Would he be any of yours? If so, would like to hear from you @ [email protected] Thanks, Michael Shannon
Betty, I'm looking for connections to the Guseman family. My Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather Godfrey Guseman's dau., Mary married James Kern on 10/25/1820. I had hoped to turn up information on Godfrey by checking the Kerns Family. This is all I have on them, so it's a long shot, but one never knows where data will turn up. Mike

Barbara, There was a Hopewell Quaker Meeting House outside of Perryopolis, Perry Twp., Fayette County and I've also note that there was one established in Frederick Co., VA circa 1732 so perhaps as members of that church moved west they carried the name with them. I believe that some did become Baptists. I don't recall seeing any mention, however, of a Hopewell Baptist church in Monongalia or Harrison Counties. Perhaps someone else knows of one.
