For those who want to trace, "Stop and Frisk" the best place to start is Colonial Virginia. That is where the laws against Negroes Moving About were passed by Virginia Legislatures. This is not a Genealogy Tree, it is a history book, of people who made contributions, against a back drop of racism. The descendants of those featured in Notes and Documents fought in the Revolutionary War, Civil War (United States Colored Troops), out of Pennsylvania. In Virginia Mary Bowden (b. 1. [VA-AFRICANAMER] Runaway, Negro Billy (Granbery)---Norfolk Gazette, 1812
    2. freedbyluvv
    3. TEN DOLLARS REWARD     Runaway from the subscriber, a Negro man named Billy. About 5 feet 4 inches high, 22 years old, a good sailor, short and well set, very large lips, very dark coloured, much pitted with the smallpox and a small scar on the forehead. This slave was employed some weeks past at work on board sitting out in this harbor. I think it probable that he is now about Suffolk or that some person may have shipped him to go coast wise or up the river. The above reward and other reasonable expenses will be paid for securing the said slave in any jail in Virginia so that I get him again.                                                 John Granbery                                                 Dec 7

    1. [VA-AFRICANAMER] Runaway, mulatto man Leigh Jackson, ---Alexandria Gazette July 4, 1823
    2. freedbyluvv
    3.   THIRTY DOLLARS REWARD Ran away from the subscriber residing in Fairfax County Virginia on the 26th a mulatto servant named LEIGH, commonly called Leigh Jackson. Said slave is about 6 feet high, twenty-eight or thirty years of age, has a down look when spoken to, took with him a blue cloth roundabout, two pair of pantaloons, one of blue cloth, the other of brown linen, a great coat, and two fur hats, one white and the other black, the former much worn. A very minute description of his clothing would be unnecessary, as he will no doubt use every means to escape detection by changing them the earliest opportunity. As the above slave eloped without the least provocation, he has in all probability shaped his course to the north, the favorite resort of all our Virginia slaves. I will give the above reward for apprehending and securing said slave in any jail so that I got him again, or thirty dollars and all reasonable charges if brought home.                                      GEO. 2. freedbyluvv
    3.  an excerpt.....  THIRTY DOLLARS REWARD Ran away from the subscriber, living near Fairfax courthouse a negro woman slave for life named Celia, about 21 or 22 years old...has a scar occasioned by a burn above one of her elbows and a scar about one and a half inches long on her neck. Had on and carried away with her sundry clothing, one of calico with red stripe, one large rose blanket, one quilt, one large striped bedstick, a bonnet of pale color, and many other articles not recollected. She has a father and mother residing on the farm of William McCarty, Esq. near the junction of Broad Run with the Potomac River where I think she may try to get to so as to be conveyed off to some of the eastern states, as her father it is supposed conveyed away her brother. She also has relations in Alexandria, at Mr. McCarty's, Cedar Grove, and at Mr. Francis and Thomas Coffers in this county. Any person securing her in jail in Alexandria or this state shall receive the reward of 20 dollars. If out of the state, or in any other part than Alexandria D.C. thirty dollars, and if in either case brought home, all reasonable charges paid.                                                Samuel Ratcliff                                                Feb 22
