    3. My father was James Noel Cooper 1915-1978. He joined the Navy in 1939 and was in the Philippines aboard the USS Canopus AS9 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Six months later he was captured by the Japanese when Corregidor fell. He was a Japanese Prisoner of War for 3 1/2 years. After WWII was over he stayed in the Navy and retired in 1959. With this being the Memorial Day Weekend, I thought it would it be interesting to post one ancestor we have in our family trees who served in one of the many wars and battles we fought in US History. Obviously it has to be an ancestor from this branch of service. :) Give a brief biography of that person including the unit and war he or she was in, a POW, injuries, plus the usual genealogical stuff. Thanks in advance and have a safe weekend! 3. All I know is my father served in WWII on the USS Sepulga.  Have a few pics from his log book, a couple pics with uniform on.  I also have his uniform, minus the shoes and hat.  Basically top and pants.  His name is sewn in on the front panel of pants. Not for sure if this is what you wanted but it us all I know about my father. 3. I have a relative, John Brown, married at Stoke Damerel, UK who was married in 1811 at which time it was stated that he was a boatswain on the Sloop Sally. I have been told by English sources that this was probably a US ship but also that there was more than one boat called Sally I know minimal about the Royal Navy and even less about the US Navy. I know nothing else about John Brown and trying to trace him is proving difficult. I know from the National Archives at Kew in London that there were a number of boatswains called John Brown so that doesn't help. Ican't find out anything specifically relating to a John Brown and a sloop Sally. I am not sure if boatswain was just a term used as an English rank or also in the US Any help at all would be very gratefully received Many thanks Pauline

    3. I am helping a friend and we are looking for information regarding her brother and have the following: Minor Thomas. Rice born 25 Sep 1915 died 1 Sep 2003 He was a resident of Oceanside, California at the time of death. He also served in the US Navy. We have not been able to locate any military records thus far. She was told at one point by his estranged wife at the time that he was buried at sea but have not been able to prove that. The information we got on his death came from the Social Security Death Index. Being his sister, does she have any chance of finding out what happened to her brother as in through the Navy? She wrote the National Archives and has submitted a request through NARA requests form for military records SF 180. If anyone can advise how to pursue we are most grateful. I had contacted the library in Oceanside and they said they would do a search for an obituary but never heard back and tried to reach them since but to no use. Thank you in advance for any advice/help. Susan Schlosser Wisconsin
