    1. [UK-NORTHWEST] TWO DAYS left!
    2. Steve Hayes
    3. In just two days time all Rootsweb mailing lists are to close. Members of lists without active moderators who pass on the information will find themselves cut off without knowing why. I've written a blog post, giving as much information as I have at the moment, to try to let people know what is happening. https://t.co/8Bhy5ya5AQ Please help to let people know what is happening by posting links to that post (and any news items you may find) on social media sites, genealogy forums etc. Several new lists have been started to replace this one and others that covered roughly the the same area of north western UK. I'm assuming UK NorthWest includes at least Lancashire to Ayrshire, and possibly the western Scottish highlands. One problem has been that there have been too many overlapping lists, and duplications. After 2 March I'll be sticking to the Cumbria list, and possibly this one for the wider area thought I'm not sure how much each list covers. It might be helpful, before the Rootsweb lists close, if the people who have started replacement lists post descriptions of them in all the relevant Rootsweb ones, with explanations of how to join them. -- Keep well, Steve Hayes Blog: http://hayesgreene.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/famhist1.htm E-mail: shayes@dunelm.org.uk

    1. [UK-NORTHWEST] Joint listing with Cumbria FHS
    2. Kim Milne
    3. First, an apology. Although I've created a NORTHWEST list on groups.io this was always with a view to it being a temporary bolthole before Rootsweb's closure on 2nd March 2020. I know many of you have already subscribed to https://groups.io/g/NORTHWEST-UK but if you're agreeable I intend to invite all current NORTHWEST listers to a new list at http://cumbriafhs.com/mailman/listinfo/list-northwest_cumbriafhs.com The Webmaster at Cumbria FHS has generously offered us a home on their servers, which I think will give us a more stable & permanent (if there's such a thing) platform for our list. The groups.io list will remain as long as any of the listers require & can be used at any time. I don't intend to close it anytime soon. I've been made aware that groups.io partner to Amazon & Google and may use our info. But for a permanent home with features that are familiar to all current listers I am recommending that we subscribe to the Cumbria FHS list. It works exactly the same as the current Rootsweb system & has archives the same as the Rootsweb system. Unfortunately, Rootsweb has seen fit to hold on to all current Rootsweb archives so I can't bring them over. To search the archives of any current Rootsweb lists will require you to still go to Rootsweb only. You need do nothing until I send you an invitation to the new list. Because of the privacy provisions of the General Data Protection Regulations we can only invite rather than just swing over to something new. I welcome any comments. Kim List Admin

    3. I searched in vain for a public announcement or news report about the closure of the Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists. It is being done almost secretively. 1. [UK-NORTHWEST] Alternative Lists
    2. Kim Milne
    3. There is a very preliminary proposal from the Cumbria FHS to host any mailing lists pertaining to Cumbria on its servers if these lists cease on Rootsweb. I emphasise that this is a VERY tentative proposal at this stage & no details have been offered or negotiated. But I personally think this would be a much better alternative to such forums as Facebook etc where many listers might be reluctant to sign on. Moreover, moving to Cumbria FHS servers would mean our list will function much as it does now, albeit that we'll still only have access to the archives on Rootsweb's servers. I'll keep the list informed as matters progress. Kim List Admin

    3. The following message has been sent to all listowners:- by RootsWeb Administration Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team Kim List Admin

    1. [UK-NORTHWEST] Area of coverage of this list
    2. Kim Milne
    3. This list covers genealogical interests in the Counties of Cumberland, Westmorland & Lancashire. There are other lists for this general area, viz:- CUMBERLAND which covers the County of Cumberland, but which includes interests in what is now Cumbria. ENG-CUMBRIA which covers Cumberland, Westmorland & the areas of Lancashire which were enfolded into Cumbria in 1974. All three lists basically cover the same areas & I assume their genesis is the result of matters in the past where someone has started a list that better suits their direction. All three have several hundred subscribers (and perhaps many duplicates) so if you can't find an answer on one it may be that you can find it on another. I'm List Admin of all three & I welcome any & all to whichever list(s) you choose. Incidentally, if your interests spill a little eastward over the border, there is also the UK-NORTHEAST list which covers Northumberland, Durham & Yorkshire. I also admin this list. Regards. 1. [UK-NORTHWEST] TAYLOR - Beathwaite Green
    2. David Taylor
    3. I am searching for the antecedents of Thomas TAYLOR (c. 1749 - 1824). He was living at Beathwaite Green when he married Agnes ADDISON (also of BG) at Heversham, 28 July 1772. He was buried at Heversham, 7 August 1824, aged 75. I am searching for the parents of this Thomas TAYLOR, where he was born, and his baptism (he was not baptised at Heversham, the parish BG was then in). He appears to have lived in Beathwaite Green/Levens for the rest of his life. He was a husbandman, and owned or rented two plots in the reclaimed Lyth valley. I know of no brothers or sisters of Thomas TAYLOR. I would welcome any information about this Thomas TAYLOR. David Taylor
