    3. Christine, Thanks for the additional information. Knowing that her name was Florine and she grew up in Onalaska, Polk County, Texas was most helpful in finding some information. Here is what I found in 1930. 1930 Census, Polk County Texas, Onalaska TWP, Prec. 2, E. D. 7, sheet 11b, April 26, 28,1930 line 51, dwelling 205 Smith, R. T., M, W, age 44, married at 26, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. TX, Farmer Smith, Maggie, wife, F, W, age 44, married at 26, b. NC, fb. NC, mb. NC Smith, Florine, dau, F, W, age 16, single, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. NC Smith, Elaine, dau, F, W, age 14, single, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. NC Smith, Rob Jr., son, M, W, age 8, single, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. NC Pruett, Lorane, niece, age 15, single, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. NC McLeod, Helen, sister-in-law, age 24, b. TX, fb. NC, mb. TX Smith, M. W. (lodger or father, written over), age 62, M, W, married at 30, b. MS, fb. MS, mb. MS (his initials would be any combination of M & W). 1920 Census, Polk County Texas, Prec #2, E. D. 120, sheet 11a, Feb 2-3, 1920, Institution: Sawmill line 13, dwelling 216 Smith, Bob, Head, M, W, age 34, married, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. TX, foreman at a sawmill Smith, Maggie, wife, F, W, age 33, married, b. NC, fb. NC, mb. NC Florine, dau, F, W age 6, Single, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. NC Isabell, dau, F, W, age 8/12, b. TX, fb. TX, mb. NC Now we know her father was born in Texas and her mother in North Carolina, so that will narrow the search somewhat. However, we have to take that information with a grain of salt as census data can be wrong. The key is to find Robert with his parents is the 1900 census. The other thing we should do is to figure out who M. W. Smith is and trace Helen McLeod and Loraine Pruett. All these clues may have to be used in order to find Robert's grandparents. The problem is that Ancestry doesn't have an index for 1900 for very many states as yet (only AZ territory, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) There are 15,468 james smith's in Texas in 1910, so i looked in Polk County TX. In 1910 in Polk Co, I find a Monroe J. Smith b. 1856 in Alabama and Jim Smith b,. 1855, Mississippi. It is possible that one of these might be Robert's father. I'll have to look more later and other things require my attention right now.
