I am researching the descendants of William Splawn of Polk County, NC. Several of his children went to Wise County, some stayed and some moved on. From William's will and other sources, his 13 children can be proven and I am listing them here. Thanks for this wonderful list. I would love to hear from anyone interested in this family. Virginia Green [VaGreen100@aol.com] Descendants of William Splawn Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM SPLAWN was born May 27, 1800 in South Carolina, and died January 10, 1884 in Polk County, NC. He married (1) Mary (POLLY) CAPSHAW, believed to be the daughter of JAMES CAPSHAW and MARGARET TABOR. She was born January 04, 1806, and died Abt. 1849 in Rutherford County, NC. He married (2) JANE WALDROP December 1850 in Rutherford County, NC. She was born December 02, 1824 in Rutherford County, NC, and died July 24, 1885 in Polk County, NC. William and Jane Waldrop Splawn are buried in the old Splawn graveyard in Polk County, NC. From William Splawn's will, census, and other sources, it is possible to identify his children. In the 1850 census of Rutherford County is listed "Abecca" born 1829. If she was his daughter, she died without heirs before he did. Another possibly is that she wasn't a Splawn at all, but someone "helping out" with his motherless children. Children of WILLIAM SPLAWN and POLLY CAPSHAW are: 1. NARCISSA2 SPLAWN, b. Abt. 1830, Rutherford County, NC; d. Abt. 1890, Wise Co., TX; m. SAMUEL STONE, October 16, 1846, Rutherford County, NC; d. Bef. 1870. Narcissa is not known to have any children. She went to Texas with the families of her half brothers and died there about 1890. I have not found a tombstone for her in Wise Co. Narcissa Splaun (sp) married Samuel Stone; bond date 16 Oct 1846; county Polk; Record # 01 023; bondsman M Splawn; witness: Luke Waldrop; bond #000110276 Polk County existed for a brief time; I guess this happened then. Later it was reformed in 1855. 2. MARGARET ELIZABETH SPLAWN, b. March 16, 1832, Rutherford County, NC; d. October 12, 1914, Polk County, NC. . She married RANSOM PONDER January 07, 1857 in Polk County, NC, son of HEZKIAH PONDER and AMY RANSOM. He was born October 21, 1809 in North Carolina, and died January 02, 1899 in Polk County, NC. They are buried at Mill Spring Baptist Church 3. ALEXANDER GRAHAM SPLAWN, b. October 18, 1834, Rutherford County, NC; d. April 02, 1907, Polk County, NC. He married MARY PONDER October 11, 1860 in Polk County, NC, daughter of RANSOM PONDER and MARY OWENS. She was born August 05, 1844 in Rutherford County, NC, and died February 09, 1921 in Polk County, NC. "North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868" Mary Ponder married A. G. Splawn 11 Oct 1860 Polk County Record # 01 022; bondsman was E. M. Waldrop; witness was J C Waldrop, Justice of the Peace; Bond # 000110272; marriage date 11 Oct 1860; performed by J C Waldrop Justice of the peace. They are buried at Mill Spring Baptist Church 4. LATHY SPLAWN, b. 1838; d. 1914; m. HARVEY C. DAVIS, January 26, 1870, Polk County, NC. They lived in Rutherford County NC. 5. MELISSA SPLAWN, b. November 1840; d. Bef. 1908; m. (1) ELIJAH D. TAYLOR, December 15, 1859; m. (2) J. G. THOMPSON, October 01, 1903, Polk County, NC. She did not have children by either of her spouses. Polk Co., NC marriage bond date 15 Dec 1859; date of marriage is the same. bondsman was Ransom Ponder; marriage was performed by Alex J. Causler, Minister of the Gospel 6. LETHIA ANN SPLAWN, b. December 1842, Rutherford Co., NC.. She married SAMUEL REED March 24, 1868 in Polk County, NC, son of WILLIAM REED. He was born July 1849 in North Carolina. They do not seem to have had surviving children. They moved to Texas. 7. MARTHA SPLAWN, b. 1844, Rutherford Co., NC; d. Abt. 1888, Smith Co., TX. She married WILLIAM REED February 13, 1868 in Polk County, NC, son of WILLIAM REED and CATHRYN. He was born June 25, 1846 in Greene Co., TN, and died September 16, 1921 in Atascosa Co., TX. After William Reed married Mary Elizabeth Bundrick, they moved to Atascosa Co., TX WILLIAM REED is buried in Old Pleasanton Cemetery. 8. ELLEN SPLAWN, b. 1848, Rutherford County, NC. I think she married a Henderson Children of WILLIAM SPLAWN and JANE WALDROP are: 9. WILLIAM BUTLER SPLAWN, b. January 05, 1852, Columbus, Polk County, NC; d. December 11, 1922, Decatur, Wise Co., TX. He married MARY MARSHALL COLLINS March 03, 1881 in Tarrant Co., TX, daughter of MARSHALL COLLINS and SARAH BOSTICK. She was born September 17, 1862 in Paint Rock, Jackson Co., AL, and died November 28, 1942 in Jacksonville, Cherokee Co., TX. They are both buried in Wise County. 10. JOHN TERRELL SPLAWN, b. April 03, 1855, Rutherford Co., NC; d. June 12, 1901, Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. 7. He married MARGURITE WALL 1885 in SC. She was born February 18, 1849, and died March 25, 1902. Both John and Marguerite are buried in Wise County, TX 11. WALTER SCOTT SPLAWN, b. Abt. 1859, Rutherford County, NC; d. March 1908. . He married ANNIE BACON. He was a graduate of Wake Forest College and Louisville Seminary. and a Baptist minister. He was pastor of 1st Baptist Church, Gainesville, TX and also pastor of the Baptist Church in Bonham, TX and of a church in Kentucky. He was President of the Baptist Pastors" and Workers" Conference of Texas. 12. GEORGE WASHINGTON SPLAWN, b. February 22, 1861, Polk County, NC; d. November 26, 1924, Decatur, Wise Co., TX.. He married (1) S. EMMA CLARKE March 14, 1887 in Polk County, NC. She died in North Carolina. He married (2) LOU .W. EDWARDS August 15, 1889 in Polk County, NC. She was born February 25, 1869, and died January 25, 1897. He married (3) FANNIE ARNETT 1899. She was born September 18, 1866 in TN, and died December 27, 1959 in Decatur, Wise Co., TX. S. E. Clarke and G. W. Splawn were married 14 March 1887 Polk County Record #01 022; witness: W. H. McFarland; Bond # 000110271; additional Data on License "North Carolina Marriage Bonds 1741-1868" [I don't know why this marriage is found here as it occurs after 1868.VG] LOU W. EDWARDS: Burial: Slidell Cemetery, Wise County, TX 13. PLATO DURHAM SPLAWN, b. Abt. 1872, North Carolina; d. 1929 Oklahoma. I found that he married CHARLIE VICTORIA GOODRUM, daughter of JOHN GOODRUM and SUSAN CLIFTON. She was born October 1879 in Greenwood, Wise Co., TX. In the 1920 census he is in the Western Oklahoma State Hospital and he died (and is buried there) in 1929.
