A lady I spoke with had an interesting way to use old family pictures with no names on them. When she finds someone who she thinks shares her family tree, she asks to share the old pictures even if they have no identifying information. If both families have the same pictures, or pictures with the same people in them, she feels that is an ironclad way to say the two families belong together.
