I can fill in a few details regarding the posting below, and correct a couple of errors. Like many surnames, the Earp name has been spelled (and misspelled) numerous ways often depending on the education level of early day scribes who generally simply wrote what they thought they heard: Earp, Earpe, Earps, Arpe, Irp, Urp, Yearp, Hearp, etc. Descendants of John Earp, son of our immigrant Thomas Earp, *generally* (but not always) pronounce the name "arp" and spell it Earp with a silent E. Some, but not all, descendants of Joseph Earp (son of Thomas Earp, our immigrant) pronounce the word "urp". The 'urp' pronunciation has been more widely used, especially by non-family members, since the 1950s when the TV program The Legend of Wyatt Earp became a regular show. One line of the family changed their spelling from Earp to Arp when they removed from Wilkes Co., NC to Monroe Co., TN. Abednego Earp, Jr., changed his name to Benjamin Arp supposedly because of a family "disagreement" and because he tired of it being mispronounced 'urp'. Martha Vastie "Mattie" Benton, wife of Albert William Earp listed below, did not die in Grand Saline, VanZandt Co., TX, and she did not die of TB. She was sitting in my grandparent's living room, Sam & Inis (Laster) Earp, at Park Springs, Wise Co., TX when my then-5-year old aunt Lena Earp McWilliams (who dyed her hair red when she was about 40 and beginning to turn gray, not when she was a teenager ) discovered Mattie dead in her chair. Mattie had Bright's Disease (kidney failure). It is true that her body was bloated with fluid and she was buried in the nearest cemetery, Cumby Cemetery, rather than taking her to Post Oak Cemetery for burial beside her husband which was farther away. Sam L. Earp and wife Inis Laster (daughter of William Ruffin - not Ruben - Laster) and 4 of their children are buried in Sunset Cemetery. Sharron Spencer From: "JOHN ANDREWS" < [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> Subject: [TXWISE] Fw: Earp Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 13:42:18 -0600 Here are some Arp's (Earp) that you all probably know about. Samuel Earp was a Wise County resident and lived in Park Springs. He and his wife are buried in Sunset Cemetery along with their daughter Jewel. According to Legend the pronunciation of Earp to Arp was done deliberately because of the so-called reputation of Wyatt Earp, who is a relative to our Arp's. There were those that thought by changing the pronunciation to Arp would disassociate them from Wyatt, the bad guy. Anyway, here is what I have, enjoy. By the way there is available a book, that is for sale, that is several hundred pages long that gives great detail about the Earp family. I don't have one, but I believe I can get in touch with someone who can tell you where to buy it. Descendants of David Dunlap Earp David Dunlap Earp Margaret Elizabeth PHILLIPS Earp Children: Anderson 'Andrew' EARP. Was born in 1833 in Anderson County, Mississippi. He died on 8 MAY 1862 in Corinth, Mississippi, while in the service of the Confederate States of America of a disease. He married Isabella LASSITER in 1860 in Kemper County, Mississippi. She was born: 14 APR 1844 in Mississippi. Children: Albert William EARP was born in 1862 in Kemper County, Mississippi. He died 27 NOV 1906 in Montague County, Texas, near Bowie and is buried in Post Oak Cemetery; Post Oak, Texas. He married Martha Vastie (Mattie) Benton on 30 JAN 1883 in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. She was born: 7 JUL 1860 in Grand Saline, Van Zandt, Texas and died 20 March 1918 in Grand Saline, Van Zandt County, Texas. She is buried in Cumby Cemetery, Wise County, Texas. There may be some ambiguity on where Mattie died. Grand Saline, Texas is some 150 miles from her final resting place in Cumby Cemetery. Therefore, it is believed Mattie lived either in Montague County or Wise County when she passed away. The reason given for her not being buried along side Albert in Post Oak cemetery was that Mattie died of consumption (Tuberculosis), which consequently caused her body to bloat. It was a great distance to travel between Park Springs and Post Oak, especially in a horse drawn hearse, that it was decided by the funeral director and family to bury her in the much closer Cumby cemetery. They were all afraid that the longer trip would cause her body to swell more and possibly explode in route. Children: Emma Earp was born 25 MAY 1884 in Johnson County, Texas. She died 20 April 1974. According to Lena Joann Earp McWilliams, Emma's niece, Emma was a beautiful lady with flaming red hair. Lena obviously wanted to look like her aunt Emma so she started dying her jet-black hair red during her teenage years and a few years thereafter. Samuel L. EARP was born 17 SEP 1887 in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. He died 12 Feb 1975 in Bowie, Texas and is buried in Sunset Cemetery, Sunset, Texas. Willie L. (Jud) Earp was born 4 OCT 1889. He and his wife Pearl L. had three children, Hershel R., Margie, Aliece and Lotella. Willie, Pearl, Hershel and Margie are buried in Cumby Cemetery. --snip-- Samuel L. EARP was born 17 SEP 1887 in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas and died 12 FEB 1975 in Bowie, Montague County, Texas. He married 13 FEB 1908 in Clay, Texas to Johnnie Inis LASTER She was born on 8 AUG 1893 and died 20 FEB 1987 in Montague County, Texas. They are both buried in Sunset Cemetery, Sunset, Texas. Inis' parents were William Ruben Laster & Ida Rosella Blake Laster both are buried somewhere near Tucumcari, N. M. John
Sharon: That is so helpful. Thank you for providing such extensive information. I shall try to make connections with it. D. A.
